Beyond Belief News-24 May 2010

A family from Texas is racing to stop a woman from having her toes

amputated, because they want to let the prayer have more time to work.

They started praying 5 heart attacks ago.

The lack of circulation has left her toes black and doctors fear that if they don't act soon, her

condition may worsen.

Still after all the needless… Continue

Our Right to Religious Intolerance.

Listen up theists, mocking or criticizing your religion is not "intolerance."

You have never been shy about preaching to everyone how wrong/immoral/destructive it is to not believe in your God and your

religion.

I defend your right to hold those opinions, but don't cry intolerance and victimization when we voice ours too.

Disagreement is… Continue

Definitions-Science

This is the beginning of a new series called "Definitions". This series

will look at various words and concepts that are misused and

misrepresented in order to create dishonest discourse and garner support

for unsupported positions.

At first glance such a series might, intuitively, seem unnecessary as most people do their research, right?… Continue

Secular 10 commandments

After having thought about it for a long time, and having no respect for the

biblical 10 commandments I am going to post 10 for a secular society

that have…

What would you do if YOU were god?

How would YOU design creation?

Would you hide yourself?

Would you make your words open to abuse and interpretation?

Would you include terrible stories to be told in your name?

Would you make creatures whose very existence is to make another being suffer?

Would you make the… Continue

A message (and some advice) to all the young earth creationists out there.

If the universe is less than 10,000 years old, then;

all that we know about geology and biology is wrong;

the speed of light has been wrongly calculated which means;

Einsteinian physics is wrong and;

the distance and speed of other galaxies has been wrongly calculated,which means that all we know about astronomy is wrong which means that;

Newtonian physics is also wrong.

Why I support banning the burqa

This is a very sensitive topic, and I am not sure why. People argue that the burqa is merely clothing and that laws restricting what clothing people can wear is against our very fundamental freedom of

expression, freedom of religion, not to mention our sexual autonomy.

Let me say only this;

The burqa is NOT merely clothing, it is not just a dress or a costume,

It is a MESSAGE.

It is a message that… Continue

Beleifs are not due respect

Beliefs are not due any respect.

People are.

Would you respect my belief if I said that the moon was made of green cheese or would you call it silly even though you respected me?

Would you respect my belief if I said that I believed that goblins made my garden

grow or would you think me a bit off for putting out a bucket of cheese

for them every night?

Would you respect my belief if I thanked the… Continue

Bizarre Bible Lessons-Part 3

Obedience

Found in Mark 11:13-14

This is a hard lesson for some. When do we obey? When do we think for ourselves? Well the bible lays this out very carefully in more than a

few places if we are careful enough to see it. One such place is in a

story from the pages of Mark, about Jesus and a walking trip to a far

away temple in the town of Bethany.

So in this recounting of a clearly true event, we… Continue

Bizarre Bible Lessons-Part 2

Communication is the key to any relationship

Found in: Numbers 22:28-30

In a society filled with new age solutions to everything from depression to marital bliss, we find that the bible once again has the answers.

Turn to the old ways of mutual communication and respect. No more need

for birthing sessions, for psycho analysis, for therapy and no more

need for divorce. Just follow the…

Bizarre Bible Lessons- Part 1 Genetics.

A lesson in genetics

Found in: Genesis 30:37-39

As we all know, the bible is divinely inspired and, with this lesson so clearly stated, I am not sure why we don't look to it more often for scientific

answers and advice in search for knowledge. Could there be any more

pure and precise source of knowledge than the magic man who started it

all? (For those of you waiting for an answer, the answer is… Continue

"Contemplating the Quran" OR "The house that hate built"

With all of the criticism Islam extremists are facing you might think that another diatribe about their evils isn't necessary. I contend that they haven't faced enough and that there is nothing MORE necessary in

our political climate than one honest examination of Islam "extremism".

In the current political climate of religious safety from criticism it is

practically impossible to protect ourselves from extremists in… Continue

AA; 12 steps to healthy or 12 steps to holy? (or "How a religious cult got hold of our vulnerable and sick")

Most of us throughout the course of our lives have heard of AA and their 12 step program. This is a highly respected organization whose mandate is to

help those who can't help themselves through a powerful support system.

People go there when they feel that their lives have spiraled out of

control with alcohol, the courts intervene to send people there when

they cross the…
