Next week we are making a big announcement about the new Recovering from Religion initiative. I think it is time we non-theists stepped out and helped those who are not totally infected with religion, find their way out. Help… Continue

Dan Barker

I went to hear Dan Barker speak last night at Kansas State University and to talk with the student Freethinker group about Recovering From Religion. They had a great turnout and Dan's speech was fun. The student Freethinkers are very active. Jessica and Ray have done a good job of getting the word out.…

Heartland Humanists and Recovering from Religion

Had a great night talking to the Heartland Humanists annual banquet. As with many secular humanist groups, they know how to have fun. Several people expressed an interest in facilitating Recovering from Religion groups. As of this weekend, we have prospective facilitators for six groups in six cities. The goal is to get Recovering from Religion groups going across the nation. If you want to participate, contact me and we can discuss how to get you started helping people leave their religion.… Continue

Two Kinds of Non-Theists

There seem to be two kinds of non-theists. The first kind (type 1) are those who were raised that way. Their parents were not religious and didn’t teach or encourage religious participation. The second (type 2) are those who were infected early in life and had to endure religious indoctrination and intimidation through their most formative years.

These two groups often have difficulty understanding one another. Type 1 non-theists often think religion is just to obviously ridiculous… Continue

Is Atheism a Religion

"I get this question all the time from religionists. 'Isn't atheism a religion as well?' Aside from the cute responses like 'If atheism is a religion then bald is a hair color', it is really difficult for religionists to "imagine no religion". Its like they think humans cannot live without religion, so what ever they espouse, must be a religion. Here is the way I have taken to explaining it to them.

"Athiests have no imaginary friends, religionists do- its that simple. We live… Continue

RR

We have two and maybe three groups forming for recovering from religion. We would like to spread the word and get at least a dozen groups going over the next month or so. If you are interested in facilitating a group in your area, take a look at the website, guidelines and other resources and let me know. I will help you get started. www.recoveringreligionists.com

Recovering from Religion

I just announced today the Recovering from Religion initiative. See the video announcement on my channel on youtube (damon132) and this website. I had hardly posted the video and I had several people commenting and contacting me. That is so encouraging. What is needed are some people across the country (or world) to become facilitators of a group in your area. Here is the meetup page we… Continue

Recovering Religionists

In the next few days I will be sending out a press release for a new group I wish to develop. It has occurred to me that there are many people out there who would not call themselves Atheists or even Agnostics, yet they have a real sense of how religion has infected them and hurt them in many ways. The name of the group will be Recovering Religionists, and will have principles similar to the old AA twelve steps without any god references. My vision is to create meetups that will be directed by… Continue

Religious infection

In my book I write about infection techniques but the more I study those techniques the more appreciation I have for the role of decreased immune resistance in the process. You tend to get sick when your immune system is suppressed or weakened by stress. Opportunistic disease organisms take advantage of the weakness to infect. Many people get infected when they are young and have little resistance to religion and are under the intimidating protection of religious parents. Adults often get… Continue

American Atheist Conference

I have been off my blog for a few days while I attended The American Atheist conference in Atlanta. Had a hugely fun time. Athiests know how to have fun but I have to say that the Alabame Atheist contingent with Blair Scott could take the prize (if there was one). The height of the conference was the debaptizing ceremony led by Edwin Kagin and his cronies. It is a simple process, quick and painless by hair dryer no less!

The official sacrilegious food… Continue

Dogma Free America

I have listened to Rich Orman's Dogma Free America for a couple of years and love his international flavor to understanding the impact of religion on the world. This week he had me on his podcast to talk about The God Virus. You can listen to it on iTunes or download it from his website: http://dogmafreeamerica.com/index.php?post_id=452268

Rich has a great interview style and certainly did his homework before the podcast. Take a listen and let me know what you think.

Brain as computer II

Daniel Dennett does a great job of examining and explaining memes in this video.

Brain as computer- some ramblings

In the debate over the virus metaphor, many people miss the clear parallels between the human brain and a computer. While many have no problem with the notion that computers can be infected with a metaphorical "virus", it seems that the line is drawn when the human brain is involved. There is abundant evidence that biological viruses can infect and take control of organic brains - controlling them much as a computer virus does. What makes us so resistant to the notion that ideas can do the same… Continue

Interesting essay

I just returned from talking with a great group in Joplin, MO - link. Who would guess that there is a very active and lively group of freethinkers in such a bible belt city (25 attended). We had five students from Ozark Christian College in the audience as well. They asked interesting questions and stayed around for some good conversation at the end. I rarely get religious people in my presentations, but I certainly… Continue

Crazy for God

I often judge a book by how much it makes me think and reflect. Frank Schaeffer's, Crazy for God: How I Grew Up as One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right, and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back - certainly passed that test. The outdoors, mountains, adventures with firecrackers, hunting, hiking and, of course religion, all were a big part of my childhood and relationship with my father as it was for Frank. Some other similarities struck me as well. As the oldest, my mother… Continue

Dogma Free America

Had a great conversation with Rich Orman on his podcast, Dogma Free America. You can listen to it through iTunes of his website http://www.dogmafreeamerica.com/ It will be on line around April 8.

His is one of the three or four free thought podcasts I listen to every week. I have listened to his podcast for a couple of years now and enjoy its "wider angle" view of the issues we all are concerned about on the planet. What is different is their more international view of religion's… Continue
