Ok, so you may have seen or heard this headline out there in the Atheo-sphere....
It's not exactly rigorously scientific, I think, but people who have examined data from the popular dating site OKCupid have noted that if you're a stickler for grammar, odds are you're probably an atheist.
To which I can only… Continue

I think my favorite film in the whole Harry Potter franchise has got to be The Prisoner of Azkaban. For the sweep and drama, the emotional development of the characters, it does it all for me.
My favorite scene in that movie is near the end, with Harry at the lake, surrounded by swarming Dementors....he keeps holding out, waiting for his father to save him. And waiting... and waiting...
Until he finally realizes that if anyone is going to save the day, he has to do… Continue

I didn't see any FAQ or news item address this yet, but I have heard that Ning is transitioning from a free network to a pay network, and I was wondering what will be the fate of Atheist Nexus? I'm unemployed at the moment so this is no trivial matter for me. Are the A|N administrators happy with the Ning decision, indifferent, what? Is the plan to stick it out with Ning, or move to a different free (to end users) service? Or should A|N members plan to pony up $3 a year to continue… Continue

I am working on starting up an A|N group for Texas A&M Former students who are also atheists. There are a lot of Aggies out there, of course, but how many of us are nonbelievers? I'd like to know and meet you. I'm TAMU Class of 1993 and was a member of outfit Trident P-2.
We hear all about the famous "Aggie Network", but does it really work for you if you're an atheist, or a Libertarian instead of a Republican, or worse, you're a goddless lefty liberal like yours… Continue

I resigned my Library job with TWU in mid-December after my boss and I reached an impasse over what constituted reasonable work expectations for a Librarian I, Cataloger. She absolutely slammed me in my annual performance review with no advanced warning or counseling or anything. She then set up basically impossible conditions, and it was very clear that she was trying to run me off and was setting traps to get me fired. I tried to talk things out with her but failed every time, because her… Continue

I know I'm a little behind the curve but I just finished watching the documentary JESUS CAMP.
Just wanted to jot down my first impressions before I forget them, so apologies if this is a bit disorganized.
I was singularly unimpressed by the performance of the liberal Christian radio host in trying to mount a defense against and criticism of his more evangelical co-religionists. Liberal Christianity makes for a poor defender of democracy and reason indeed. The best defense… Continue

So anyway, I had a friend in High School, well, more of a friend of a friend. Actually more to the point the girlfriend of a friend. Let's call her Lynn. Not her real name, but as I describe her, people who know me will know exactly whom I'm referring to. Lynn was Class of '87, if I recall correctly, while I was Class of '89, as was my friend Jay (not his real name), who hooked up with Lynn his sophomore year (her Senior year). Some of us thought Jay was he luckiest guy in our circle of… Continue

Really enjoyed our local Meetup.com Atheist meetup downtown tonight. We started out at our usual hangout, Banter, but because of an unexpected musical performance, we relocated across the street to Hydrant Cafe, where we could actually converse and not strain our throats and ears.
We did actually experience our first heckler, of a sort, back at Banter; one middle-aged woman felt the need to tell us that "God saved my bacon I don't know how many times."; It took me a second to realize… Continue

It will be interesting to watch A|N grow with time. Right now it seems like a pretty small community, and I feel a little self-conscious posting stuff, since unlike MySpace, or Facebook, anything you say or post seems to shoot straight to the top of the main-page for all to see and yak about. Not sure I like it personally, but it will probably help the community to grow. Once it reaches a sufficient size, some degree of anonymity will be restored as one's musings will be quickly buried in the… Continue

Not that it will do any good to say so, but all "friend" requests from Spammers and potential Spammers will be promptly ignored/rejected. Get-rich-quick schemes, links, whatever...If I spot that on your profile, I'm ignoring your friend request outright. Don't have time to mess with that stuff.
Some folks have been more subtle than others, but either way I don't appreciate it.

Yet another Social Networking Site - Whiskey Tango Foxtrot! "You really should join!"
So anyway, I went ahead and joined AtheistNexus. I have too many theistic friends and family on Facebook; I was having to go back to MySpace to really speak my mind, but mostly as a lone voice crying in the wilderness. I've been slightly more assertive on Facebook of late, but it is never far from my mind that one of my longtime High School friends is an Episcopal priest, while two… Continue
