All-Knowing, All-Powerful, Ever Loving God

One thing I truly struggle with, as an atheist, as a person, as a friend to believers, is that huge gap between what REALLY IS and what believers have to do in order to continue making sense of reality through the eyes of their belief.  They must redefine words and phrases again and again.  They must find a way to hold "free will" and "God's will" together in one hand and figure out how those concepts can adequately explain things.  Believers must repeat, like…

'Tis the Season

I *will* say "Happy Holidays".

Because I am disrespecting Christmas and Christians?

Absolutely and Resoundingly NO.  It is because I speak very deliberately and I use words and expressions thoughtfully and I choose to include all people I see in my good wishes.

When I say "Happy…

Hot Air

I think it matters what you call things.  I guess it is true that a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet.  But you can't ignore the fact that words are powerful.  Words have the ability to bring one's emotion up to the heights or down to the lowest depth.  Words are powerful.  That is why I am quite militant about language and the use of certain words.

I'm not a freak about your spelling (though mine will, in general, be correct).  I'm not the punctuation police or the grammar…

Homeschool Atheist Momma

Are you an atheist homeschooler?

If you are, then I KNOW you have spent hours upon hours on the internet looking for guidance, like-minded people, curriculum, and support.

I've been thinking about this so much lately.  One reason it is so difficult being atheist parents is that, for most of us, we are first generation atheists.  We have no frame of reference, no common rituals, no role models, no easy fall-back positions, and VERY FEW homeschool materials to help us on our…

Absolutely and Resoundingly NO.  It is because I speak very deliberately and I use words and expressions thoughtfully and I choose to include all people I see in my good wishes.

When I say "Happy Holidays" I absolutely mean that I wish YOU and yours a very happy holiday of your choice.

Please, accept that certain parts of the media (Bill O'Reilly, for example) have…

Going Back INTO the Atheist Closet

At dinner the other night, my kids made a request of me.

Could we please go into the closet as atheists.

We have lost friends, have been treated badly, and have experienced unpleasantness from the mouths of babes.  The kids have HAD IT with being…

A Guest Blog Post for Homeschoolers That You Might Enjoy!

I guest posted on a blog called Mumtopia. This is a small excerpt from that writing; if you are interested, follow the link to the post!

"As parents, we realize that the parents around us are doing their best. They are making choices that, while they may not be my choice, is their informed and examined choice. It is their choice based on a variety of reasons that I might not understand or agree with. Parents all around us are making decisions and living by paradigms that…

O Tannenbaum

Do you put up a tree? When?

We put up a tree. The past many years we've gotten away with putting it up about mid December and removing it the day or so after Christmas. This year the kids are insisting, "We're putting up the tree this week and it's not coming down until after Christmas!"

Jer and I are…

I Can Refute That

I've been thinking about the dozens and dozens of ala carte Christians out there.  It's really a free-for-all these days with the believers.  When I was a kid, man, people staying in the lines!

In a way, I'm proud of "them" for being able to put the kibosh on some beliefs that are particularly irksome.  Various positions on "THE AFTERLIFE", for instance.  Instead of feeling the need to fall in line in the pew,… Continue

Dr. DeGrasse-Tyson, I presume.

If you read my blog, you know that I have been struggling with a label.  Am I Humanist?

I've been reading and watching and thinking and musing and whatnot and, sure, I agree with so much of the tenets of those who call themselves Humanist or Secular Humanist.  So what.  I realize it's not that big of a deal.

The other day I was listening to a podcast that had a wonderful interview with Neil DeGrasse-Tyson talking about this EXACT THING.

Like, isn't it amazing… Continue

What's it Like Being an Atheist?

It’s a lot like being the only sober person in a car full of drunk people,

and they refuse to pull over and let you drive.

Morality vs. Ethics

The questions are:

  • Do atheists have a moral ground for their perception of right and wrong?
  • Is an atheist entitled to claim a sense of right and…

Defending Homeschool

The "usual" criticism of homeschooling stacks up like this:

* Socialization

* Curriculum

* Multiculturalism

* lack of testing

* homeschoolers have fewer resources

* poor quality of teacher

* homeschoolers are ideologically-driven

* homeschooled children are ill-equipped to function in society

* and keeping funding from the public schools.

I am delighted to take each of these issues separately.… Continue

Lifelong Learners

Lifelong Learners

Being a Homeschool Mom

I am a good homeschooling mom and I’m going to muse on why I am good. What do I do that makes me certain, confident, comfortable, and

effective as a mother homeschooling the two more important people on

earth? I have honestly never adequately put this into words. I’ve

tried, but I have never been satisfied with it. I’ll try again…

NINJA FREAK!!!

My son and I were at the public park the other day. He was "dressed

out", as he says. Wearing some concoction of a costume, including a red

scarf around his head and hanging down his back, ninja style. He was

feeling fine, hip, cool, happy, and energized!

Now, imagine him running up to the swings, pushing off, soaring as high

as possible with a smile as wide as the sky. Next to him, the child on

the swing asks him, "What's that thing on your head for?"

My son… Continue
