Sacred Secularity?

This essay was just published on State of Formation, primarily a site for inter-religious discussion among theists in educational institutions.  The premise won't appeal to every atheist (or theist of course) but those of us who live and work with theists need to find some new, creative ways of presenting a viable alternative.  This is one I offer.

Atheists and Interfaith

From the Parliament of World Religions

As one who has worked as a theist within the interfaith community and now as a non-theist among some of the same folks, I think this is worth serious consideration.

Christian Music--Embedding Jesus in Your Head

Larry Norman, Randy Stonehill, Phil Keaggy, Second Chapter of Acts, John Fischer, The Way, Oak Ridge Boys, Elvis, "Gospel," holy hymns, church choirs, "sacred" music, Young Life Songs and Creations spiral songbook. . .it was, and is, an endless composition of brain-saturation.  I listened to countless hours of it, went to concerts, bought the albums, met some of the "artists" like Stonehill, Fischer, Barry McGuire, Yohann Anderson and others.  Believe it or not, I once sang in an 8000-voice…

Four Year Old Sees Heaven, Writes a Bestseller, Destroys Atheism!

It's all true.  We have to believe this story.  From the mouth of a child.  Buy the book.  Support heaven and the blue-eyed Jesus.  Why wouldn't you just believe?  I mean, here's what the publisher says:

“This was a very down-to-earth, conservative, quote-unquote normal Midwestern family. We became fully convinced that this story was valid. And also that it was a great story that would just take off.”…

Holy Newt! Or, Salamanders, Lizards and Geckos for President

If only other species could lead for awhile. . .since our species seems so inept.

I might actually suggest The Newts--gentle, deliberate, slow, peaceful, amphibious, non-theist. . .if Mr. Faith-of-Our-Flounders wasn't desecrating the word:

Holy Newt!

Alert Local Public Stations about "Birth of Freedom"

Free Speech and Stealth Evangelism
If you haven't seen this it is worth noting that a slick production called "Birth of Freedom" is being shown on some public television stations. This sectarian slaughter of both American and World History is appalling for its inaccuracies and not-so-veiled attempt to paint America once again as a Christianist nation. I would recommend…

God Hates Dirty Feet

This has just been posted on the Natural Bible blog. Please be respectful and wipe your feet before viewing (and make sure there are no sacred symbols on the doormat).

Life After Faith, New Book On the Way

My seventh book, Life After Faith, will be published in the next few weeks. Based on almost a half-century as an insider, it tells the story of my emergence from super-natural faith to practice a down-to-earth kind of "natural spirituality." This will not please extremists on either side of the divide! Some atheists will throw garbage and some people of faith will throw prayers, but it's a personal story of leaving faith, ordination as a Protestant Minister… Continue

Whitman: A Freethinker's Prophet

This has just been posted on the Beyond God site.

Walt Whitman continues to impress me as a wildly reasonable (yes, an odd pairing) voice for those who are exploring the wilderness out beyond the supernatural ideologies and theologies of distraction. He is a kind of Freethinker’s Prophet (kind of). Here are a few lines from a remarkable, overlooked or underappreciated section of…

Newt Gingrich on the Mayflower?

I wrote this essay after reading some of Newt's new book, To Save America.

He calls for Americans to stand up and fight?

Are we ready?

Answering the Question, Who/What is God?

This was my response to a request from Patheos, an interreligious website, asking people of faith and no faith to offer 100 words or less on Who/What is God?

Who/What is God?
One day we may discover that the universe
is shaped
like…

Wild "Community" of Non-Theists: Do Atheists Need a High Priest (Dawkins, Stenger, Harris, Hitchens)?

Since it seems as timely as it did a few months ago, I'm reposting this breakdown of Atheists.

What think ye, freethinkers?

I've been thinking about the many different kinds of freethinkers/atheists/non-theists I run into. Here is my breakdown of the sectarians in the naturalistic "community." I hope this starts a healthy, productive, creative discussion!

A: Angry, aggressive and obsessed with anything anti (a, a, a, non, un. . .)

T: Thoughtful, thinkers and…

Writing a New Bible!

I would be very interested in hearing from other members about my new project, "recycling" and "shredding" the old holy books to create good compost for what I call the "Natural Bible." Check it out: http://naturalbible.wordpress.com/

Community

Good to find this community in the Season of Un-Reason (though I was born on Christmas and became a minister, I now climb the trees and honor the life of Nature on that, and other, days!).

I invite conversation and readers here, and on my website. I especially welcome comments on my book Life After Faith and I'm happy to hear from any other writers or teachers (or former… Continue
