Applying to be a notary

I had fun today! I made plans to go down to the courthouse, pay the fee, sign the form and get a notary commission. In Georgia it's astonishingly easy to become a notary. Two people from your county affirm you're an upstanding citizen. You take that and a photo ID to the clerks office of your county, pay $30, take an oath, and congrats you're a notary!

My plan was to scratch out the 'so help me God' portion of the oath and see what happens. Here's the outline version of what… Continue

Talking Atheism and Dawkins with a police chaplain

I don't know exactly how this will go, but I have a lot of respect for this man. I've known him for 4 1/2 years now. I forget how the subject came up at all, but yesterday (seeing as it's now 2am) I 'came out' as an Atheist to him. He seemed rather surprised. (Seeing as I live in Georgia most people are surprised. I'm not shy about my beliefs. I don't shout about them, but when presented with an opportunity I gladly share my views.) He also teaches courses at a local college to do with religion… Continue

Justice David Souter announces his retirement!!

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/05/01/justice.souter.retiring/index.html

I'm almost positive he waited to retire on purpose! The article mentions how burned he was by the 2000 election. Yeah Souter!

Reading Leviticus

Crap... I sat down at lunch and read a little of Leviticus. I live on the buckle of the bible belt, so sitting with a bible at lunch is something I see every day. I was in a cafeteria. Every so often I laughed out loud! I couldn't help it!!! Heads turned. Eyebrows raised.

So I sat there with my pen to underline the more bizzare points and had to settle for single words. It was all so bizzare. (I don't have it in front of me, so pardon the lack of direct quotes.) God sure does like… Continue

Lisa vs. bible beaters; 5:30p; Starbucks

A few minutes ago there was a knock at the door. I usually don't answer the door - it's always bible beaters. Well, it was. :-D

They said I was the first atheist they had come across. We talked for a few minutes and they were interested in setting up a time to meet and talk further. I'm meeting them when my shift ends today at starbucks... this is going to be FUN!!!

Religion vs. Non-religion showdown??

Tomorrow is "Partner Apreciation Day" at Starbucks. This means we can wear a regular tshirt rather than the standard 'uniform' of collar shirt (white/black) and slacks (black/tan). There's a good chance a certain coworker will wear a religiously themed tshirt. I'm arriving early to sit in the cafe, work on some personal stuff and see if he's wearing a religiously themed shirt.

If he's wearing a religiously themed shirt, I'm changing into a tshirt I purchased at the American Atheist… Continue
