The Long March of the Koalas

Creationism is so tiresome, but this Aussie take on the wowcrazy Creation Museum and its originator Ken Ham (who is also responsible for Answers in Genesis) is just so hilarious I had to share it, by Slacktivist at http://www.slacktivist.typepad.com/slacktivist/2009/08/land-of-oz.html.

The Gift of Old Age

I received this in my email this morning and although I am not yet old - though rapidly approaching it - it summed up my philosophy of life pretty nicely (I already recognise myself in a lot of it!). This is how I want to be in my old age and know that when my time comes to slip this mortal coil and return to oblivion, I will have enjoyed it to the last - life is too short to do otherwise!

"Old Age, I decided, is a gift.

I am now, probably for the first time in my life,… Continue

Evolution's new wrinkle

A team of Princeton University scientists has discovered that chains of proteins found in most living organisms act like adaptive machines, possessing the ability to control their own evolution.

The research, which appears to offer evidence of a hidden mechanism guiding the way biological organisms respond to the forces of natural… Continue

Part 1: The Church's War with Galileo

From A HISTORY OF THE WARFARE OF SCIENCE WITH THEOLOGY IN CHRISTENDOM: by ANDREW DICKSON WHITE. This text is in the PUBLIC DOMAIN & the entire book is available on Internet Infidels.

Galileo's discoveries clearly took the Copernican theory out of the list of hypotheses, and had placed it before the world as a truth. Against him, then, the war was long and bitter. The supporters of what was… Continue

the history of the cross and its use by the christian church

In 1896 a man by the name of John Denham Parsons wrote a book on the history of the cross. Since he had been a young man several questions regarding the cross had puzzled him and when he was older he determined to try and and answer them for himself.

The first of those questions was why John the Baptist, who was beheaded before Jesus was executed, and so far as we are told never had anything to do with a cross, is represented in religious pictures as holding a cross.

The… Continue

My first appeal to a Christian

Today I made my first appeal to a Christian as an atheist and posted a comment on this blog,

http://thewomanofvirtue.blogspot.com/2008/10/four-year-old-who-knows-she-needs.html

which was flagged up by a commenter on Pharyngula and has now been picked up Richard Dawkins website and others. Up until now I have been something of a lurker :-) I have not been active, only an observer and have never jumped in at the deep end until now. I am a committed and convinced atheist, but… Continue
