Strong Atheist, why?

Introduction...

So it has been just slightly under two years since I wandered into A|N. When I first arrived I was in someways unsure of what I was, atheist, agnostic or just plain secular. However as time went on, and I understood myself better, I found myself in many ways drifting into one particular camp, the strong atheists. Recently with…

To my future 50 year old self

This the the last year I can actually consider myself a person in their 30s.

I never much cared about my birthday but this year I cannot seem to stop thinking about the approach of my 40's.

It is always a strange exercise to imagine the what if, what could have been, what I might have changed given the chance to do it again.

If I could go back in time and ask my 30 year old self what he thinks his life would be like in 10 years time, or what the world would look like… Continue

A data point of "1"

I have often wondered how different we (royal humanity we) would have been if the Neanderthals had survived along side us into modern day.

Imagine a world with two data points of intelligence and consciousness instead of just one.

Imagine developing along side another thinking species, seeing the differences as well as the similarities play out in real time.

What would it be like to meet a mind that evolved along side us, from the same basic lineage, and yet was… Continue

Myself vs myself vs fiction...

I have been struggling of late, to understand religion and belief, asking myself the question...

Why do people feel the need to believe in fictions?

This past weekend my mom said something very telling to me that I think struck at the heart of my personal dilemma for the past few months.

"We (my family) did not need Religion, the way others families did."

To put some context around myself and this post (I warn you its a bit of a ramble, if you want… Continue

Why not nuclear energy?

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but I want to know why not nuclear energy as a solution to the fossil fuels issue.

Don't get me wrong, I support wind, earth, water whatever natural more environmentally solutions long term to get us off of whatever limited resources we have on this planet. But those technologies still seem to me to be several years away, and still need serious R&D.

But why is nuclear not looked at as a solution?

We have built great… Continue

Is it time to make citizenship tests mandatory?

I am trying to figure out why someone wanting to immigrate to Canada is held to a higher standard of education and civic knowledge then I am. I don't know if I could pass that same basic test, that is administered to a person wanting to join up with our version of a democratic country.

I am starting to think that all citizens should be asked to pass some sort of basic civic knowledge and history before being allowed to participate in the general election process. I know this sounds a… Continue

Bringing the Funny! Humour as a path to Atheism.

I am not a Blogger at heart, I don't feel I have anything to say (that hasn't been said before or better by others), or any great wisdom to lay down. However this time, I think that this idea is interesting enough to be shared.

I see a lot of "why I am an Atheist" posts and blogs (mostly because I am looking for those things right now). I am still fairly new in embracing my Atheism, though I have been an agnostic/atheist for probably longer then I myself have… Continue
