Didn't she have a right to live?
The couple was sentenced yesterday for their part in their daughter's death. They received a sentence… Continue

When American Atheists (AA) realized that the Kentucky office of Homeland Security had '"God" in its law, it sprang to action. Along with 10 other plaintiffs, AA filed suit to get the reference to God removed from the law.
According to AA, the "2006 law... blatantly mixes church and state, in defiance of the US Constitution." The law they speak of requires that the executive director of Kentucky's Homeland Security shall "[p]ublicize the findings of the General Assembly stressing the… Continue

The Freedom From Religion Foundation, a state/church watchdog and the nation's largest association of atheists and agnostics, has written public school officials in Petoskey, Mich., to object to unconstitutional wording on the school calendar.
On Aug. 18 during a closed session, the school board voted unanimously to change the wording of the school calendar from "Winter holiday break" to "Christmas break." That was eight days after the board treasurer, Jack Waldvogel, sent an… Continue

A public school district in Uniontown, Ohio, erred by listing "belief in God" in its mission statement as a district "value," the Freedom From Religion Foundation says. The Foundation sent a letter Aug. 26 to Lake Local School District after one of its Ohio members alerted FFRF, which has about 350 Ohio members and 13,900 nationwide.
The suspect wording was included in the August 2009 issue of Blue Streak News, a district publication.
In the Foundation's letter, staff… Continue

After considering input from the public, lawmakers in Washington state have made a decision about how they will handle displays at the Capitol building in Olympia this holiday (Christmas) season. In an attempt to avoid all the nonsense that ensued last year, which gained national media attention, it has been decided that nothing will be allowed to be placed inside Capitol building.

The Secular Coalition for America has been working hard to have the atheist voice not only heard but taken into consideration in Washington for years. As a result of their diligence, nontheists have finally earned enough respect to be given a seat at the political table.
During 2009, SCA has had many successes in Washington and it has suffered some disappointments. However, they are still working hard, with Sean Faircloth, the new executive director at the helm to continue to work… Continue

So often people try to suppose what some historical figures might think, say, or do were they alive in current times. And this is especially true in the ongoing debates on separation of church and state, atheism versus theism, and science versus religion. It seems in these debates no people are invoked in this way more than the Founding Fathers and Charles Darwin.
To take someone like Charles Darwin, who lived in the 1800s, and suppose one might know how he would respond to anything… Continue

The Iowa Atheist and Freethinkers (IAF) group met today with the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) to discuss the above ad that was pulled from Des Moines buses just days after they went up. Ben Stein has been fired from his job with The New York Times. Karma? (wink:wink)
Stein was criticized by many in atheistic circles, so to speak, after he misled prominent atheists like Richard Dawkins and PZ Myers to get them to participate in the making of his movie, Expelled. He also came under fire after PZ was not allowed to attend a showing of the movie for which he had tickets. So, karma or not, there are likely to be many who will shed no tears for Stein. Some may even… Continue

Well, now that the atheist bus ads have been pulled from transit buses in Des Moines, controversy is brewing as to the truth of why they were pulled.
On the one hand, the transit authority claims that the ads were never approved in the first place and that they were accidentally put on buses. On the other hand, the group, Iowa Atheist and Free Thinkers, that sponsored the ads said the ads were approved.…

There is much ado being made of the lawsuit filed by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) to keep religious words from being engraved in the Capitol Visitor Center (CVC). Specifically, according to a FFRF press release, the lawsuit was filed "to stop the prominent engraving of 'In God We Trust' and the religious Pledge of Allegiance at the Capitol."
The media has grabbed hold of this story and doesn't seem to want to let go. Most of reports on the lawsuit are less than… Continue
