Abuse Bowl Hoax

The Super Bowl is barely 24 hours away, and people across the country, even other parts of the world, are all gearing up for a marathon of beer, Velveeta topped Fritos, endless commercials (and, oh yeah,  probably a little head banging good ‘ole ‘Merican football, too). And many are also bracing for that annual orgy of misogynistic violence that accompanies it.
Or are they?

Ban the Bible and the Quran

The law states that any material that "incites violence or hatred" is ignoring the responsibilities of liberty/free speech and therefore should be banned. Unless it is religious. Then, of course, it is exempt from that law.

Think about this.

On the one hand, an individual could produce a leaflet that incites violence or hatred; only a few hundred people may get to see it, most of whom will dismiss it out of hand. The law argues that if there is a risk…

Rerun of Episode 51: Bad Bible Part 2

This week, I'm feeling pretty poorly, sorta shut down. I've been listening to and enjoying some of my older podcasts, so I thought I'd share an old one with you guys, one from 3 years ago. I hope you like it.

Informed is Forewarned: Read the Quran.

I’m almost half-way through my second reading of the Quran and find myself wondering what it would take to make Westerners understand Islamic ideology. I could explain how Islam is a religious, legal and political framework for life . . . but others have already written books about that. So I decided I’ll just frame the problem of Islam as briefly as I can and let the reader consult the Quran if they doubt me. If this leads to just one person reading the Quran, then I’ve accomplished… Continue

Kick a Ginger- Do we Blame Television or Bad Parenting?

"They say blonds have more fun, but it was redheads who might have got a bigger kick on Thursday, dubbed by some as Kick a Ginger Day.

Across the country, school boards had to contend with a joke from an episode of the satirical animated show South Park that has spiralled into a day of promoting violence."

"Gingerism” is a growing concern in the United Kingdom, home to the largest proportion of redheads in the world. In 2003, a young man was stabbed repeatedly over a… Continue

9/11 and the Moral Poverty of Religion

When tragedy strikes, as it did on September 11, 2001, it is only natural for us to look for higher meaning amongst such chaos. As empathetic and curious beings, we ask standard questions. Why did this happen? Who could have done this? Will there be justice? Can I help? And, most importantly for our purposes, what could motivate someone to kill themselves (and near 3,000 innocent people) in such a brazen act. Self preservation is of course, the most powerful instinct.… Continue

My story repeated

A guy I know from class approached me today on break. "Can I have your number to give my girlfriend? She needs someone to talk to." This guy had heard my story, which I've just started being open about in the past year. (This is a counseling/therapy group class.)

She called today and we talked for about an hour. I can see why he asked me in particular. So many things in her story were in mine. Molestation, physical violence from parents, biblical/spiritual abuse, abusive men, drug… Continue

In America, Everyone Deserves the Right to Murder Their Family

Coming off an unprecedented few months of gun violence and murder. Another terrible story developed when Tony Ryan Bellar's wife, Wendy Bellar, wanted to leave him. Upon hearing the bad news, Tony did what any reasonable husband and father would do. He picked up his 7.62 mm rifle and murdered his family. More

The Friendly Atheist has also… Continue
