Pat Robertson is Divorced From Reality

When you’re talking about the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) a good defense is apparently a good offense – and no one is more offensive than…

Christian College Bans National Anthem

In a bit of a twist, a Christian school has banned the National Anthem. “As a result of a thoughtful, thorough, prayerful period of listening, learning and discerning,” the Goshen College Board of Directors said, “it…

The Values of Everything, by George Monbiot

I am posting this not so much because of his opinions on progressive and conservative politics, but because of what he has to say on intrinsic and extrinsic values, especially these quotes:…

Children Good Without God

A concerned prospective father sent me a message asking,

"I'd like to learn something as a good father from you. Considering that you're an atheist, how can teach your children how to behave in good manner and ethic. Because when I was a kid, my parents used to tell me "Be good boy and tidy your room then God will bless you...etc." I don't want to say these words to my children as a prospective father. And i wonder what do you…

Looking Sexy

A co-worker and I were examining a picture of some extreme and very expensive high heeled shoes that were quite obviously extremely dangerous to wear as well as insanely uncomfortable. I commented on how bizarre they were and my younger friend said that they were supposed to make you look sexy.

Not Again, Again!

Well, for all of those who have been concerned, and even those that couldn’t give a shit, I’m still here. I haven’t succumbed to the consequences of my so-called ‘maladaptive behavior’. The powers that run society haven’t yet deleted me from the universe.

Not again!

I’ve managed to piss off yet another Atheist Nexus member. This time it’s because of my personal profile.

It states among many other things: ‘No values’ yet, I’m informed by this person, because of their seeming absolute certainty; ‘You should have values that support the individual living among other individuals as a society.’

When I requested what values I should have I received none. I have to have values but I am not told what values will help society. Of course, I’m… Continue

Part One: What Are Our Values?

I'm a fan of George Lakoff from his book Don't Think of an Elephant! and assorted videos of his presentations. His idea of frames presents good reasons why we can't just kick over a few theistic talking points (even when we're right) and expect to have believers drop everything and take up our banner. It doesn't matter that we have science and reason on our side; they'll keep inventing new ways to square their circles (to quote Hitchens) or find an excuse to duck out of the debate… Continue
