Are atheists spiritual? Yes! If you mean atheists posses a sense of wonder and love

Without a doubt, some animals have an awareness of life and death. One obvious example is the elephant. Even dogs and monkeys are known to grieve. There is something in the brain that registers those realities and humans are the only ones with verbal language to express their feelings of loss and grief. However, there are other languages, i.e. holding and carrying a dead baby, laying on a grave, touching the dead body. It is only recently that humans came to…

Spiritual Atheism

Laura asked me about being a spiritual atheist, and I had such a long answer that I turned it into today's blog post. Is there such a thing as spiritual atheism? What would spirituality mean to an atheist, to Sam Harris for example?

What Am I?

The greatest question to me at this moment is "what am I?"

Not just as it pertains to my social label of Humanist, atheist, agnostic, irreligious, skeptical, etc., but in relation to my mere existence. This fuzzy feeling I get when crawling around in the darkness of existentialism seems too real. I keep finding new ideas and experiences and when I press their "on" buttons to see what they do, it changes my perception of reality. It's more than just being objective when playing with…

Let's All Get Spiritual! The Many Meanings of "Spirituality"

“Without knowing the force of words, it is impossible to know men.”

Confucius

I recently heard some women discussing a “women’s spirituality group.”  They wanted to determine whether there was such a thing as “female spirituality”?

It’s impossible to say, since no one can really be sure what someone else means when he/she uses this word.

Spirituality is very popular these days.  Everybody wants to be known as “spiritual.”  That’s not…

A Secular-Humanist Definition of "the Soul"

“I always wondered how much my soul was worth.  So when Cinemax asked me if I’d go on camera to interview soft-core porn stars on the set of its new series, ‘Sin City Diaries,’ in return for $2,000 and a free night in Las Vegas, I discovered that my soul was worth some amount less than $2,000 and a free night in Las Vegas.”

Joel Stein

In other writings I have defined two of the most vague yet most powerful religious buzzwords – “God”…

Atheist/feminist typology

So I'm doing some work with another member of A|N and we're doing some research on the intersection of gender, feminism and faithlessness. I've come up with a (very rough, very ugly) typology sort of piece about how feminists are religious (or not). It is based mostly on my own experiences and observations as well as some of the trends I've noticed in research about feminism and religion.

This very rough typology can be found as a google doc here:…

Atheist Spirituality

Hey there Nexians!

I blog over at www.ziztur.com, and will be reposting some of my blog posts here and writing some new ones. Enjoy!

I can imagine that everyone reading this blog is aware of the fact that I am an atheist. You might be wondering what an atheist has to say about spirituality, or how an atheist defines spirituality. You might be wondering if I am going to ride in on my atheist high-horse. So before I actually begin talking about the subject of spirituality, I… Continue

This is a little story about a whistle stop on the way to atheism. My husband Mike wrote this one.

Our Lady Of Spiritual Ambiguity by Mike Pence

LeiLani Burt stood upon the stage, arms outstretched, swaying to the lilting music, perfectly quaffed and immaculate in her Sunday best. For a 60-something year old woman she was kind of hot, enormous hair bun and all. With her eyes firmly closed, and head tilted slightly back, she spoke, "We welcome… Continue
