Making Atheism Stand for something more than just a lack of belief?

Yes, the classical definition simply means that you don't believe in a god.

Here's what I would like to see for the future, though:

-activism. A striving for equality and understanding.

I grew up surrounded by racism, class-ism, ableism, sexism, sizism, homophobia and a whole lot of other -ism's that are negative, and detrimental to society, by splitting it up into "us" and "them", and a lot of these are in religion, some are outside of it, but much of it, is…

California Boy found.....

http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/bestoftv/2011/02/01/exp.NG.missingboyfound.hln?hpt=T2

Unfortunately, not alive.  I'm completely outraged over this murder and the mother involved...and with Nancy Grace for telling this 'mother' "all of America is behind you".  Well, no I'm not.  I feel terrible for the little boy and the agonizing death he must have…

Chapter Seven; DOES ALLAH REALLY CARE? REALLY? part twenty-seven

I must add here the crimes of Muslim men that are being committed against innocent women just because the men think everyone should think the way they do. Though Muslim men make up a small part of most communities in Europe they make up a large part of the men convicted of rape and sexual assault. The men do not feel guilt since they blame the non-Muslim for not…

The O3 Campaign

http://www.myspace.com/511538195

Please check out my myspace page and show your support. We want to get the word out so that the godless survivors of incest, sexual assault or rape have a community to speak up with or out to. The O3 Campaign is also dedicated to publically using the word 'Atheist'. Why? Because we don't feel it to be a negative word, and the more it is used it will become a 'household' name and not be immediately… Continue

Sexual Trauma and the Non-Believer

I am a sexual assault victim's advocate in Texas. The one constant that I see on a regular basis is the undying need to believe that a god has protected the victim from death, or somehow povided a cell phone to call for help. Of course when I'm at he hospital with the victim and their family, I keep quiet and remember that this is not the time or place for a theological discussion or debate. I do not participate in their prayers, but I do not act negatively to them either. Some call this… Continue

Recovering Religionists

As I travel making presentations on my book, inevitably several people want their copy autographed and want to tell me the story of how they escaped religion. The stories are at once fascinating and heart rending. It has been a joke for decades among former Catholics that they are recovering Catholics. It generally meant that they were actively trying to get over the programming and brainwashing in guilt and sexual repression taught in Catholic schools and churches. I would suggest a slightly… Continue

Sexual Control in Religion

Why is sexual control so important in most major religions? This is the subject of my next two videos. I just put up part 7 today and will get part 8 up soon. Sexual control is important to religions NOT to help people to control sex but to put them in a double bind - caught between powerful biological drives and teachings that appear to oppose those same drives. Sexual guilt must be taught/learned. There are cultures where sexual guilt is not experienced or is a very minor part. Food control,… Continue

Infection through guilt

Going a slightly different direction; it is my observation that development of guilt in the child or young adult opens a portal for religious "guilt relief." There is a lot of evidence for this but one common theme is the many songs children learn in their religious training that involve guilt. "That saved a wretch like me." It appears to me that once the guilt "module" is installed in a child, the child can more easily be programmed with a religion - a religion that promises to assuage the… Continue

The Guilt Cycle

As a psychologist who interacts with fellow atheists, I think one area we could all take a look at is how much our current beliefs and behavior continue to be affected by early religious and superstitious training. Assumptions about relationships, human connection, and especially sexuality are often areas that, as people floating in the sea of religious paradigms, we may simply follow along without questioning. Examples might include feelings of guilt that may come from early religious… Continue
