Religion, Evil and Insanity: Has God Been Talking to You?

“Men never do evil as completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction.”

Blaise Pascal

“The religions of mankind must be classed among the mass-delusions of this kind.  No one, needless to say, who shares a religious delusion ever recognizes it as such.”

Sigmund Freud

Back in the day, the insane were considered evil, possessed.  You had to beat, torture or drown the demon within.  But the…

From Use Of Which Of The Following Can You Obtain Knowledge? Feelings, Intuition, Prayer, Reason, Hope, Emotions Or Faith.

Intuition is not valid. Feelings, intuition, prayer, hope, faith and revelation are not valid sources of knowledge. There is only the noncontrictory integration of perceptual evidence, otherwise known as reason. To be valid, a concept must fit without contradiction into your knowledge base both:

HIERARCHICALLY-perceptions(colors/shapes) -->1st order concepts (chair)-->2nd order concepts (furniture)-->3rd order concepts (goods). Spirit is not valid because it is not made up… Continue

The story of my life - so far - part 2

Hey guys, so it's been a few weeks but here's part 2.

So I've had my revelation and at the time I was 8 years old. What this meant for me was that I was still vulnerable to change. My parents were a bit worried that they may have scared me out of something that I was happy with. But at the time I told them that "I don't want to live my life controlled by something as believable as Santa." So, still in my naivety, I confronted my religion teacher with the following question: "Why do you… Continue

The story of my life - so far - part 1

Hello all, as a new member to the Atheist Nexus, I thought I'd share the story of my life so far, as I am only 16.

I was brought up in an atheist family in Australia. My dad is atheist, my mum is Buddhist, but Buddhism is a philosophy with no god. When I was attending primary school I was quick to enroll myself in the Christian Religion class that took place once a week on a Thursday. I was also quick to get hooked onto the concept of God and all the Christianity had to offer me.… Continue

The Bait, The Hook, and Deism

January 28, 2002, AACHAT... The Bait, the Hook, and Deism.

Deists are not atheists, they definitely believed in a god, and this has never been a secret. Even so, Atheists should count Thomas Paine and other Deists as friends and allies.

Religion has two aspects, the Bait and the Hook. There are lots of different kinds of bait. Relief from fear of death or misfortune, relief from loneliness by means of an imaginary companion, art,…

Here I go again, stating the obvious.

An epiphany...I have been doing a great deal of reading on atheism. While I am sure that many people have come to this same conclusion before me I am still impressed that I came up with this on my own in my own little mind.

I was reading about the god of the Old Testament and as we all know he was fairly unpleasant. This seemed to be so different from what my parents taught me about god. They did warn me however that god was watching over me and that he was keeping track of my…

The Gesargenplotzian Gospel

To further debate, I'll repost the following "revelation", received as a young man by a (now-retired) prof. of philosophy at Virginia Tech, Harlan Miller.

Harlan says that he is an atheist on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and a Gesargenplotzian on other days. IMHO he's using it…

Attitudes of Atheists toward Religion

October 12, 1997. Attitudes of atheists toward religion.

Nonbelievers call themselves by a variety of names, and have
formed a plentitude of organizations (despite their small numbers). I
think this is due to the range of attitudes they have on crucial
issues, foremost among them religion.

Recently, on an email discussion list, I read one man's comment
that he preferred the…

Another exclusive revelation

I write a blog that is clearly naturalistic even though I enjoying discussing Christianity and Christian history mixed in with philosophy(go figure!). So what do I get? People promoting a new revelation from Jewish and Christian scriptures and any other docs they can weave into the picture. It must be wonderful to divine absolute truth - I just struggle with human limitations in a physical world. Here is the letter I received for your enlightenment or… Continue

God(s): What have you done for us lately?

2009 was a year: a single spin around a rather ordinary star in the unfashionable arm of a typical galaxy, a miniscule journey by a minute grain of dust, a time span that represents an utterly insignificant moment on the scale of things cosmic. And yet, in that one teeny tiny year, human scientists have applied logic and observation, measurement and calculation to the natural world and made several magnificent discoveries that have extended our knowledge of reality and may well improve the… Continue

I once was blind...

Many atheists start as believers in some kind of religious doctrine but eventually come out of it. I'm one of those. I was raised by my devout grandmother and my abusive, alcoholic mother. Grandma told me that if my faith was deep enough, prayer would see me through any crisis. So I attended the local United Methodist church, went to the youth group meetings and attended Boy Scouts in the church's basement. I even learned to bake so I could contribute to the church's coffers (we were too… Continue
