Future Work Skills 2020

Future Work Skills 2020

People with skills on the computer have a future, as far as employment goes. Individuals with talents such as those used here on Atheist Nexus will have the jobs of the future. Production of goods will continue to flow offshore, leaving the construction trades and service jobs for domestic employment. More people need training for international…

Personal Responsibility

When I was seven the tradition was that when my dad got home was that he would spend some time unwinding by sitting in the big chair near the entry. We kids would crawl all over him, rough house a bit, unlace and remove his massive steel toed boots and socks. One day after we'd worn him out thoroughly and my little brothers  had departed to play elsewhere we somehow had a conversation that went very much like this.

Dad:  I can't force you to do anything.

Me:  Yes you can. I…

Do Your Best And God Will Do The Rest

Quotation-Leo-Tolstoy-sacrifice-vanity-Meetville-Quotes-138006

For many, many years, I have always found an unending fount of devilish giggles whenever I read sappy church signs. You know, the ones that are thought up by the honorary witty member of the church congregation that plays on puns, abuses homophones, and loves to dabble in sappy poetry attempts. What better way to market a deity than…

Power: Who Has It, Who Doesn't and How to Alter The Status Quo

In my last blog, I found myself focusing on the issue of an atheist "movement" and wondered whether such a movement would have to be bloodied in order to gain any ground against the theistic majority which holds de facto control in the culture of the United States.

Courtesy of Real Time with Bill Maher and a quote referred to by his guest, Rula Jebreal, I may not have gotten a hard answer, but an indicator of the thoughts of at least one person who has…

Power to make the point

Just a short emotion hopefully not too trivial

Occasionally during his lectures on the existence of god, Ravi Zacharias stops and excuses himself for not bringing a power point along with him. He smiles and says that he is "technologically challenged". Then he goes like the following: "He gave me the power to make the point". I have some reasons to assume that whatever he is telling to be the prove of the existence of god, the people in the auditorium will most likely remember his…

We are Gods

When many people hear about things like genetic modification, geoengineering, etc, many scream “Your playing god!” Well in a sense we are gods. Look at us, look at what we have done, look at what we can do. We can communicate with people on the other side of the world with small devices we hold to our heads, we can heat food by putting in in a metal box, we can cure diseases that have plagued humanity for thousands of years, we can build buildings hundreds of stories tall, we can fly faster…

Why Religion and God are Unnecessary in the Modern World

I was originally going to publish this at Associated Content but they don't give up front payments for opinion articles so I published it there under a non-exclusive license and will publish it else where including my blog.

Introduction

Beliefs in gods is as old as civilization as is religion. But is the belief in god(s) and religion necessary? Does it benefit society or does it harm society? It is my belief that a belief in god(s)… Continue

Higher Power

After nearly four years in AA, I finally devised a concept of "higher power" that doesn't involve a deity, the group, the "fellowship", nature, the cosmos, the laws of physics, or any other person.

As a committed atheist since the age of 4, I have always known that things were "up to me", and that I could not/would not get help from some power that was "higher" or "greater" than myself.

So one day, in a meeting, while someone was discussing his higher power, I suddenly… Continue

Atheists in Alcoholics Anonymous

We atheists can remain sober without AA.

But, for the same reason that AA members with religious faith have a hard time finding serenity and sanity in their lives without the intermittent wisdom of others to listen to, we atheists find ourselves in the same position. We "take what we need" from the things we hear at the table in order to contemplate our sobriety, just as they do, and we "leave the rest" of the gobbledygook for others to ponder--just as they do.

I was… Continue

Time For Revolution

With all the abuses that have happened in this country it is time for a full blown revolution. This long train of abuse has been carried out by not only the United States government but also with the help of corporate America as well. The very fact that it is state law that dictates you need auto insurance to drive a vehicle on roads that are paid for with tax dollars from people with no insurance is one example.

Why should state law be dictating this? People whom have cars do not… Continue
