Interviewing an atheist

A high school teacher from 6 years ago emailed me recently asking to answer some questions. He is attending seminary school and I was one of the 12 he chose to interview for his paper. This is what I wrote.

1. What is your opinion on who is Jesus?

Perhaps the strongest evidence to support that a historical Jesus did, in fact, exist is his legacy. The Bible tells us he began preaching at age… Continue

"The Grand Design" by Stephen Hawking!! I finished it!!! My opinion :) short and sweet....

So I got all nervous thinking that I wasn't going to comprehend what was written in this book. After the first chapter, big sigh of relief. I'm not going to babble on about the theories and laws Hawking and Mlodinow used to lead up to their theory of how we came into existence. I think the point of this book, IS there is finally a theory.

I feel like this book was meant to put out a rational non fantasy based argument for the existence of a uni/multiverse that doesn't have god in it.… Continue

"It's OK, it's part of my religion" from Atheist Climber blog

I published this piece at my blog and thought you all might appreciate it.

As you may know, my universe has no room for the possibility of a god. And in general I don't care what other people think and believe as long as their suppositions and practices don't affect me in any way. You can believe in fairies and unicorns and believe you have to bay at the moon 2 times a night to stop from… Continue

"At the edge of knowledge" from Atheist Climber Blog

We know nothing.

The collective knowledge of all the people on earth that have ever lived is but a drop in the ocean of all possible knowledge in the universe. (1) And the amount of knowledge any one person has is… Continue

"Just One Fix" from Atheist Climber blog

Via Atheist Climber Blog

Religion really is an oddity in humanity. When citing religion, one can be excused for irrational behaviour or beliefs. It gives people an excuse to not take part in the cultural norms of the society they live in. It allows people rights and privileges that people not of that religion are denied. It regularly excuses wrongdoing and lawbreaking if these are done "in the name of God". It… Continue

"Objectivity vs Subjectivity in debate" from Atheist Climber

From "Atheist Climber" blog,

Rembrandt's "Two Philosophers"

There seems to be a lot of confusion for people on what is a compelling argument, and what is just muddying the waters of debate. So often, when in discussions around the existence of gods, the yeasayer will turn to personal experiences of things… Continue

Intelligent design best thing that could have happened for the rational worldview?

I was thinking today about how infuriating the "my mind is made up, don't confuse me with facts" approach of creationists is, and it occurred to me that the ID movement may, in the long term, be the best thing that ever happened for spreading the scientific worldview.

Before the intelligent design movement started its nonsense, the religious community and the scientific community lived in a sort of uneasy truce. But then the intelligent design people threw down the gauntlet and tried… Continue

Why the label 'atheist' bothers me a little...

A while ago I was talking to some friends and the topic about my position came up and they asked me "What do you believe in?", to which I answered that I don't 'believe', but that I think that evidence should be evaluated and yadda, yadda, yadda (skepticism)... and then, they finished saying "So, you are atheist", to which I responded "I am skeptic, therefore I am atheist". A few months ago, there was a 'Atheist Pride March' (or something around that), and I was telling a contact on… Continue

It’s Okay to believe there may be a God?

You may be a declared atheist maybe a weak atheist like me, but I am sure at times you wonder if you got it all wrong. What if a God or Gods really do exists yes I am sure at times you may wonder and lets be honest about it, its at times when we think of dying.

I often lay in bed wondering what if I got it all wrong but then the hard facts come to mind about my path to atheism which was due to reading the holy text, well at least those that originated from the Middle… Continue

My first appeal to a Christian

Today I made my first appeal to a Christian as an atheist and posted a comment on this blog,

http://thewomanofvirtue.blogspot.com/2008/10/four-year-old-who-knows-she-needs.html

which was flagged up by a commenter on Pharyngula and has now been picked up Richard Dawkins website and others. Up until now I have been something of a lurker :-) I have not been active, only an observer and have never jumped in at the deep end until now. I am a committed and convinced atheist, but… Continue

Where Do You Stand With Suicide?

Hello, I know, a really cheery subject.

But I'm kind of lost. I'd love to know your opinions on this touchy subject.

See, 2 months ago I thought suicide was a stupid, permanent solution to a potentially temporary problem.

But a month ago, a very dear friend of mine who was amazingly intelligent and wonderful killed herself at the age of 59. I know she was in very poor health, and that she had problems with her family abandoning her. Other than that, I have no idea why she… Continue
