Demythologizing Science and Religion

The usual way of creating a myth is very straightforward: You simply take an entity as it has come to be defined in ordinary experience and grandly alter some of its basic attributes to remove its limitations.

In Christianity, for example, the god myth was created by…

How A Christian Lost His Faith

I thought it only appropriate for my first Atheist Nexus blog to be a story of how I lost my faith. Let it be a lesson on how to reason with the unreasonable. First a little background on where I came from.

I was raised in a Christian fundamentalist home. My uncle is a Petroleum Engineer which he thinks… Continue

Running into a cathedral with a stick of dynamite

I’ve always been one to let curiosity get the best of me. On the playground as a child, I refused to use the space as it was intended the way other children did. I played on the roof, I played on the outside of the walls, I climbed up the support beams. I wasn’t inclined to be restricted by the ‘right’ way to interact with the space set out for me. This trend of individualism marked many important decisions in my life, from being an exchange student…

The Insipid Myth of Original Sin

Few Religionist traditions are more patently offensive than the myth of Original Sin and its dogmatic progeny, the myth of fallen humanity. What is our Original Sin? What is our great, intractable failing? What was our deep vileness that was so abhorrent that a SINGLE human's action would be sufficient to condemn our entire species for all eternity?

Our inherent quest for knowledge. Our curiosity. Our desire to understand. God creates us with an inherent longing for…

The United States was not "Founded" as a "Christian Country"

I am an American.

On top of that I am also a Texan.

I was born in Texas and can trace my family coming to Texas in the 1850’s.

Most of my family came from the United Kingdom. The rest came from Europe.

Some have been in the United States since the early 1700’s. Some fought in the American Revolution against England.

For what I can tell, they all were “Christians” of some sort or another.

I am an Atheist.

I’ve been an Atheist since the age of six.…

Make your own creation myth

This is somethimg I thought would be interesting: Write a creation myth. It doesn't have to be the creation of this world it can be the creation of a fantasy world, alien world, etc. You can have one god, many gods or no gods.

Heres one for a story idea I had that would probably be allot better off as a game scrip.

In the beginning there was only void and from the void came Phoenix and Lóng. Phoenix and Lóng battled, from their battle came Air,…

If the Bible Was True: A Case *for* Fundamentalism

I was raised pretty damn fundamentalist. In fact, we looked at churches like Saddleback and thought "Pff! They aren't TRUE believers." Frankly, we didn't have much respect for people who didn't take their faith seriously enough to entertain the notion of drinking a little poison now and again or handling venomous snakes. I mean, come ON - the Bible says if you really have faith you can do it and not be harmed!

Actually Christians and atheists all seem to agree on one thing: My… Continue

Looking For The Facts

I'm on a Quest of biblical proportions! (pun intended)

I've spent the last two days scouring the web for cold hard facts about the origins of christianity and how it basically stole most of its symbolism and myths from previous pagan religions.

I've found several sources but they are either biased and laden with agenda, or simply not cited. And while they basically agree, that doesn't make it fact.

There must be some resources out there that are… Continue
