Preaching On Social Media - via rottingthoughts.wordpress.com

We’ve all been there at some point. You log onto your favorite social media website like Facebook, and as you scroll through the many status updates in your news feed with highlights about your Aunt Martha’s cat, or your friend’s son that lost a tooth, you see this:

If you are irreligious like myself, all you see is this:…

Who the Hell is Michael Sam?

Before his announcement of being homosexual Michael Sam was an ordinary football player and the emphasis was on “ordinary.” However, he was ordinary enough to be selected in the NFL draft. While no guarantee that he would ever become a member of any team he was good enough to be selected. So, what is so special about…

Violent Video Games Reduce Violent Crime

With the recent shooting at a school in Newtown Connecticut and the shooting in Aurora Colorado violent video games are in the news again. The old men in the old media are blaming violent video games as they always do when a shooting hits the national news.

Violent video games have been the target of old media and conservatives for years. They will spout dubious studies and claim there is a link. They will blame any act of violence on violent video games even if the perpetrator never…

"I Can't Afford the Twitter."

“Remarks are not literature.”  (27 characters) Gertrude Stein, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas, 1933

Percentage of Americans under 35 who say they text, tweet or check their Facebook pages right after sex: 36. Harper’s Index, Feb. 2010

It is not too surprising that Twitter-hating has grown as fast as Twitter itself.  I got over 450,000 hits for “I hate Twitter.”  A shot at…

How do you feel about today's state of the government and the politics that run it?

I feel disgusted. You probably do too.

I watched this week's episode of Bill Moyers and Company with their guest, Marty Kaplan (found here: http://billmoyers.com/episode/full-show-big-money-big-media-big-trouble/).

In it, Marty Kaplan said; "People say they know it's a con, just as they say that they are not being swayed by the ads for products that they see on television. If…

Proof Atheists MUST be In League with the Devil! (sarcasm)

(Relax. The title's a joke.)

I lived in Saskatchewan for seven years during my elementary and high school days and it seemed like a fairly normal place.  A little too normal - okay, maybe a little on the boring side.  It certainly wasn't overrun with demons when I lived there.

Well last week a story ran about a man who carved the…

Alert Local Public Stations about "Birth of Freedom"

Free Speech and Stealth Evangelism
If you haven't seen this it is worth noting that a slick production called "Birth of Freedom" is being shown on some public television stations. This sectarian slaughter of both American and World History is appalling for its inaccuracies and not-so-veiled attempt to paint America once again as a Christianist nation. I would recommend…

Kick a Ginger- Do we Blame Television or Bad Parenting?

"They say blonds have more fun, but it was redheads who might have got a bigger kick on Thursday, dubbed by some as Kick a Ginger Day.

Across the country, school boards had to contend with a joke from an episode of the satirical animated show South Park that has spiralled into a day of promoting violence."

"Gingerism” is a growing concern in the United Kingdom, home to the largest proportion of redheads in the world. In 2003, a young man was stabbed repeatedly over a… Continue

The Most Superficial Reply Imaginable

What is it with the media and atheism? I've noticed that journalists seem to be almost incapable of actually addressing the 'meat' of atheist arguments, instead choosing to reply to it in the most superficial way imaginable. I recently set up a Google Alerts RSS feed for the word 'atheism', and have since been absolutely inundated with articles bearing titles like 'Why Are the New Atheist So Boring?' and (my personal favourite) 'Are the New Atheists Just As Bad As Fundamentalist Christians?'… Continue

Twitter's Free Speech Fail

Today was a very interesting day in the Twitterverse. This morning, Reverend Run (of RUN DMC) tweeted, “Know God, Know Peace. No God, No Peace.”. This clever use of words (as it often does) got theists all excited and they started obsessively retweeting the tired cliché.

DIRECTV and Christian Media...

I am getting ready to move and I was looking for options beyond Comcast Cable for my Wife and I in our new place. We were recently on the coast with some friends and the house we rented for the weekend had DIRECTV. I made a note that compression artifacts were not as apparent compared to Digital Cable and that it changed channels much more smoothly than does Comcast's offering. (They only had 10 channels or so unlocked so I couldn't really look into content much and since our friends have a… Continue

the Evil Atheist Conspiracy inc.

I post relevant and interesting atheist articles on reddit via the EAC sub-board.

There are atheists. They[we] do conspire. As far as theists are concerned, we're evil, and if evil is the denial of god and godliness, then I'm as evil as they come. I rejected faith in a conference with the local Bishop whilst only 8 years old. I played along for many years, to make friends, keep jobs, and so on, but never gained anything from this game. In fact, playing along only caused me more… Continue

Is Rupert Murdoch God?

This section is gonna focus on a quintessential aspect of British culture but one that strangely but completely shares the same principles and creates the exact same negative sociological effects as…well, i’ll get to that later, but this blog is all about that Great British Icon…The Sun…that’s the newspaper, not the really hot planet…just so you know…good.

The Sun is quite an enigma really. It has the highest circulation of any Daily English language newspaper in the world. It has… Continue

Author/editor of Parenting Beyond Belief: On Raising Ethical, Caring Kids Without Religion

pythongod340909 The world is full of ignorant nonsense, and that's okay. What I've had quite enough of is ignorant nonsense from people who really have no… Continue
