To Weave or Not to Weave? That is the question.

Controversial topics never made me hide my pen or computer. In fact, the more contentious the subject, the more I am inclined to include it my repertoire of taboo themes. However, there are some areas I only touch only with thick kid gloves. In the black community, any discussion of skin and hair can be a highly…

When we toss our soul, what do we gain?

Our numbers are so few!  Even though I hear "more people are 'coming out' all the time," there's still a very tiny number of us.  Why is it that we have such a hard time finding people willing to admit to being atheist even when statistics indicate there are millions of us in this country?  I have an idea.

Atheism has nothing to offer.  We can get all freaky over reason, science, common sense.  We can prove religion is wrong all day long.  We can invalidate religion until we're blue…

My Story

Hi, I’m Mark, I am 24 years old, I was born an Atheist like everyone else, but early on in childhood I was introduced to Christianity. I was never baptized or ‘saved’ as they so arrogantly state.

As far back as I can remember my Mother always went to church,…

Goodbye Dad

My father is dying. He is dying but he is happy. He will be 80 in October and he may make it that far, though we are not sure. He is in pain and he has been struggling for many years with breathing and chest pain as well as pain in his legs.

But I do not want to dwell on the pain. I think there are many women who think of their fathers as heroes. I know this is true for me. When I was little I wanted to be just like him and one would often…

Recovered Voices, Artistic Cooperation

In between hacking homebrew D&D variants together, tweaking the css for my profile page, and wishing I could afford Aion, I was reminded of something I wanted to do a while ago. Well, months ago now. Maybe even the better part of a year. In fact, as I check it, apparently it's been more than a year, which is slightly scary.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I wrote a song (mostly because it's just easier when you're a whiny, romantic religious… Continue

Mourning a friend I "lost" to religion.

So anyway, I had a friend in High School, well, more of a friend of a friend. Actually more to the point the girlfriend of a friend. Let's call her Lynn. Not her real name, but as I describe her, people who know me will know exactly whom I'm referring to. Lynn was Class of '87, if I recall correctly, while I was Class of '89, as was my friend Jay (not his real name), who hooked up with Lynn his sophomore year (her Senior year). Some of us thought Jay was he luckiest guy in our circle of… Continue

A First Time Entry Regarding Death, Loss & "Why"

My office recently lost a co-worker to a tragic accident. The funeral is tomorrow, so it is still pretty fresh on the brain. This is the second death in the office in as many weeks, and being a big corporation, management decided to bring in a representative from our Employee Assistance Program. I understand the need for a program like this and I'm grateful to work for an employer who offers this type of service to its people, but something about the presentation made me uneasy. The rep didn't… Continue

Alezheimers, Waltzing IV's and The Living Loss of a Loved One

Over the last few years my grandmother-in-law’s memory has been slipping away from her, but has been more of an inconvenience than a danger. At times, she seems like she might be a good natured, well loved, background character in a sitcom about senior citizens. Convinced the cat has run away, stolen by the neighbor, or met a horrific end, every few minutes, she queries anyone in her eye-line as to the relative location of her nearly homebound… Continue

Jogging

So in the interest of getting off of our fat butts and doing something positive to lose weight my wife and I are going to start jogging. Starting tomorrow. I know I know, all diets start "tomorrow", but really, it's too dark now to start today or we would have.

We're going to try some "Couch to 5K" program thingy that she found online. I don't know how long it will last, but here's hoping it will. We could both use it.

Anyway, wish us luck. Kick me if I complain too much. Ask me how… Continue

I called my dad.

I called him in his hospital room. He sounded very weak and soft-spoken. We didn't talk long. I think he knew who I was, because he asked me if the boys ate. It was an odd question, but it was coherent. He dropped the phone, and the nurse took it. She told me that he just sleeps a lot anymore. It breaks my heart every time I call. I want my daddy back. Like he was before.
