Playing with god

I found a really cool play-place the other day through a friend.  She's a lapsed Catholic, but not interested in organized religion, and the first thing she told me was "This place is run by a church, but they won't proselytize."  I cringed, but we're so damned bored with the regular places and it was so cold, so I decided we'd bite the bullet.

I joked with a non-theist friend that if she heard about a mom with a child being struck by lightning, she should go ahead and…

Sent an in-house email to the cereal "Cheerios" company

I recently bought the largest box of Cheerios with the childs book "Sleepy...". Before handing it over to a child I read it to make sure it is good reading material. The content seemed nice except the push for prayer. This portion really disturbed me for there are many of us non-believers of the so-called God or Gods... I would like to put out to your company that if you are somehow pushing your beliefs onto consumers than there ought to be a warning label on the front of the box indicating… Continue

No Church for My Littles

First, a little background.

My parents are Catholic. I was raised as such and went to Catholic school from 5th grade to 8th grade (which I partially credit for my current atheism, ironically enough).

My wife and I are both atheists now, but were obviously not always so.

At one point early on my parents asked my wife, "Do you believe in God?"

To which she succinctly answered, "Not the Judeo-Christian anthropomorphic God, no."

Parents, "But you believe in… Continue

More about creations and science

In the past couple of days, I’ve been fielding an increasing number of, um, interesting questions from School Girl. Yesterday, we talked about “how the earth was created”. Last night, there were another couple of interesting questions, which found their way into the breakfast conversation this morning.

“How was the moon created? Is it really white, or black, or green?” Green? Huh…

Closely followed by…”If there’s nothing in space, is it white or black?” White being in the… Continue

"How was the earth created, Mommy?"

I got an interesting question from School Girl this morning. While we were in the middle of the “hurry-up-brush-your-teeth-and-get-dressed” tango, she asked, “Mommy, how was the earth created?”

Now, that rang a couple of alarm bells in my head. First, the Big Questions normally come at the end of the day, as we’re getting ready for bed. I’ll admit, in the past few months we’ve been talking about some Big Questions indeed. But nothing like this.

I do know that School Girl’s… Continue

Just a take on things...

I was thinking of a thought experiment to try and teach my child when she comes of age about the very basics of religion and atheism and why I stand where I do. This is what came to me as I lay trying to fall asleep last night.

Take two cups, one clear and one opaque, fill the clear one up with stones, beads, etc.. or a wide range of colors, have the opaque cup upside-down on a table. Tell the person that under this cup there may or may not be a stone under the cup and then ask them… Continue
