Ferguson: A Larger Dialog

Ferguson, MO.

Okay, please don't roll your eyes and think "Here we ago again. Another blog about police brutality, police states in America, and racist bashing." I'm not going to be analyzing the events of Ferguson, per say. I am writing about a larger picture here. No speeches about how…

Medicine, Spiritual Healing and Reality

Giving praise to God for saving a person’s life is one of the most irrational responses to recovery by a seriously ill or injured patient. Not only is it irrational, it is surely insulting and blasphemous to an all-knowing and all-powerful god. The idea that a person can petition God to perform special favors denies that God knows of his children’s needs and by default indicts him for failure to respond to the incantations and the prayers of his…

Chapter Two; MAKING THE SPIRIT REAL part six

Other adherents will offer this option to me, “If you only would trust your heart, then you would know that God is real.” To this I say, “I have followed what I felt was the Lord's leading in my life for many things as surely as you feel that you are now.”   This also includes for family, friends, in jobs, relationships, where to go for trips and much more. There is not a single area that I didn't try to “bring under” the power of God.  Even my marriage.  But the facts of reality must be…

How do you explain healing again? Here's a video of Delia Knox being healed. And at…

Layer 07: Meditations

I'm sorry if this is all rather vague.

Today I am Lain. I am Gulliver. I am a weary traveller in a strange world. I don't understand much and I am tired of hearing the noise of all these voices giving conflicting explanations. Today I don't care about understanding it. I'm tired of trying to defend why I don't believe in magic. In a nutshell it is this: Magic is science we don't understand…

Will health care reform have a 'prayer'? Let's hope not.

Faith Healer Cat

Believers in faith healing could be exempted from mandates, and faith healers could be paid with federal funds, if health care reform provisions under consideration are adopted by Congress. A petition has been launched to ask… Continue

Senseless Tragedy

This excerpt begins with me watching 30 children for 3 days while their parents attend my grandmother's faith healing lecture, held in the clubhouse of a south Florida trailer park. This all happened in the fall of my Freshman year of high school.

Alexander was two years old, blond, quiet and sweet. He was one of the kids still in diapers, but he was the only one in cloth ones. I thought they were gross, messy, and more work; I was worried about sticking him with one of the… Continue

the most honest answer I'm likely to get

My mom and I are both going through therapy over her mother, my cult-leader grandma. So, tonight we had another conversation about religion, faith, faith-healing, Paul, Revelation, and the apocalypse. She told me about her sister's teeth being miraculously straightened, and that she believes in prayer. (My grandmother was a faith-healer, hence the heavy focus on this.) I told her that people of all different faiths can report miraculous healings, that they experience the sensation the Christian… Continue

If the Bible Was True: A Case *for* Fundamentalism

I was raised pretty damn fundamentalist. In fact, we looked at churches like Saddleback and thought "Pff! They aren't TRUE believers." Frankly, we didn't have much respect for people who didn't take their faith seriously enough to entertain the notion of drinking a little poison now and again or handling venomous snakes. I mean, come ON - the Bible says if you really have faith you can do it and not be harmed!

Actually Christians and atheists all seem to agree on one thing: My… Continue

Zion Births

[The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book Exodus from Zion. Once the manuscript is completed, I'll be making an announcement if anyone would like to purchase a copy of the published book.]

Each birth was different, but births were always the same. A phone call. A scramble to pack up Bible, oils, and grandkids. My older brother and sister were attending public school the year the baby ministry was at its zenith. So I would go with Giggy, with my coloring book… Continue
