Nobody Can Show Me God

I’m the kind of guy that says if I don’t see it, then it doesn’t work.  And nobody can show me god.

-- Kerry King, guitarist for Slayer

Doubtless there are believers out there who would label the above statement as simplistic, but boil it down and what’s left is the single biggest reason why religion ultimately will have to either collapse or descend into irrelevance.  Regardless of the tradition or culture it may come from, all concepts of god share one…

Self-Management & Recovery Training: A SMART Humanistic Approach to Addiction Recovery

The May-June issue of The Humanist includes a few pieces on a secular alternative to Alcoholics Anonymous, which has recently been exposed as an inefficient system of recovery that's only supported with public funds because it's filled with religious propaganda.

In the editor's note for the issue, Jennifer Bardi…

To church she went

To church she went,

To church she went,

What is love? The little girl asked.

Well, God is love they said.

To church she went,

To church she went,

The elderly spoke the word of God.

God hates sin and he is watching you.

To church she went,

To church she went,

There is a heaven and a hell,

Do you know where God will make you end?

To church she went,

To church she…

John Lennox's Arguments Destroyed by Michael Shermer before Lennox even started?

I found this a very amusing debate.

Quite humorous comments from both sides.

But, the well was already poisoned by Michael Shermer before Lennox started his preconceived spiel.

Lennox made every mistake Shermer already gave an answer to in his first argument.

Lennox continually used the following fallacies:

"It is not possible to:" (An argument from ignorance, is following and a Dunning-Kruger effect ( "I Know") bit of nonsense is…

Altar Calls And Night Terrors

It was another terrifying experience. One of many throughout the years. This time I woke up, face covered in tears, mind in a panic as I took a few minutes to calm down. I spent a bit longer than usual getting reoriented, my mind's movie content having hit a NC-17 for a number of things. But confirming that horrible episode of disaster and loss wasn't my reality anymore always takes a minute after waking up anyway. Deep cleansing breaths of cool forced heat assured me of what my slowly waking… Continue

WasJesus Christ, just another Sun (Son) god and the Bible was based on Astrology? It appears very Likely.

Here is an interesting video, linking the Bible and the events with Astrology.

12 Disciples represent the 12 constelations.

The resurrection after 3 days, represents how the Sun appears to become frozen (dies) for 3 days, in the equinox and then appears to start its return (resurrection).

The similarities between all the Sun gods such as Mithra, Horus and Jesus, also point to this astrological basis for the Bible and Jesus Christ.

The Death on the Cross,…

Steve Shives demonstrates the stupidity of Christian Apologetics, and gives some great debunking of it.

I've been a fan of Steve Shives's work into reading and interpreting Christian Apologetics in a rationalist manner.

Steve is a very rational person and he pretty much destroys most of Christian Apologetics.

Here is Steve's appraisal of "I Don't Have Enough Faith To Be an Atheist" by Norman L. Geisler and Frank Turek. He exposes the writer's biases, bigotry and naivety.…

The atheist does not say that there is no God ...

“Atheism is without God. It does not assert no God. The atheist does not say that there is no God, but he says 'I know not what you mean by God. I am without the idea of God. The word God to me is a sound conveying no clear or distinct affirmation. I do not deny God, because I cannot deny that of which I have no conception, and the conception of which by its affirmer is so imperfect that he is unable to define it for me.”…

Personal Responsibility

When I was seven the tradition was that when my dad got home was that he would spend some time unwinding by sitting in the big chair near the entry. We kids would crawl all over him, rough house a bit, unlace and remove his massive steel toed boots and socks. One day after we'd worn him out thoroughly and my little brothers  had departed to play elsewhere we somehow had a conversation that went very much like this.

Dad:  I can't force you to do anything.

Me:  Yes you can. I…

Mr. Deity and the Humorless Atheist

For those of you who don’t know, Mr. Deity is an ongoing series on YouTube, featuring Brian Dalton as writer, director, and star of the eponymous series.  Mr. Deity is a fast-talking 21st century take on Yahweh, complete with his son, Jesse/Jesus, Larry, the omnipresent holy ghost, and adversary Lucy (fer), doing three to four minute sketches, usually riffing on various shortcomings of the bible and its god.  Frequently highlighted are Mr. Deity’s cluelessness about the…

God is irrelevant

It is not essential to believe in God or in the historical Jesus or in Christianity. What resonates for me is a deeper meaning than prayers or ritual or litanies can provide. It is an awareness and understanding of who I am, personally, and professionally. It is in being able to think and reason and pay attention to what is real and distinguish that which is superstition or tradition. It is being willing and able to think of others, including other…

Do Your Best And God Will Do The Rest

Quotation-Leo-Tolstoy-sacrifice-vanity-Meetville-Quotes-138006

For many, many years, I have always found an unending fount of devilish giggles whenever I read sappy church signs. You know, the ones that are thought up by the honorary witty member of the church congregation that plays on puns, abuses homophones, and loves to dabble in sappy poetry attempts. What better way to market a deity than…

The Irony of a Frightened Jehovah

I was watching a profile piece on CBS Sunday Morning about actor Steve Bucemi a bit ago, when I heard that actor in one of his roles offer the following poignant observation:

Do you think God stays in heaven, because he too lives in fear of what he’s created?

If there were a god of any stripe who was responsible for the creation of Homo sapiens, I should think he’d be pissing his pants by now, and with good reason.  Ever since Yahweh made the…

A New Icon for Atheists - Frank Sinatra!

I can remember the voice of Frank Sinatra from back when I was a kid.  My father wasn't quite a fan, but he had more than a couple albums which got played regularly and which I can still recall in my head when I want to.  Certainly, Ol' Blue Eyes was a vocal technician of the first water.  His intonation, treatment of even the simplest phrase, breath control and overall execution place him deservedly in a rarefied atmosphere shared with a scant few other artists, and that by itself is…

Demythologizing Science and Religion

The usual way of creating a myth is very straightforward: You simply take an entity as it has come to be defined in ordinary experience and grandly alter some of its basic attributes to remove its limitations.

In Christianity, for example, the god myth was created by…
