Personal Responsibility

When I was seven the tradition was that when my dad got home was that he would spend some time unwinding by sitting in the big chair near the entry. We kids would crawl all over him, rough house a bit, unlace and remove his massive steel toed boots and socks. One day after we'd worn him out thoroughly and my little brothers  had departed to play elsewhere we somehow had a conversation that went very much like this.

Dad:  I can't force you to do anything.

Me:  Yes you can. I…

Mr. Deity and the Humorless Atheist

For those of you who don’t know, Mr. Deity is an ongoing series on YouTube, featuring Brian Dalton as writer, director, and star of the eponymous series.  Mr. Deity is a fast-talking 21st century take on Yahweh, complete with his son, Jesse/Jesus, Larry, the omnipresent holy ghost, and adversary Lucy (fer), doing three to four minute sketches, usually riffing on various shortcomings of the bible and its god.  Frequently highlighted are Mr. Deity’s cluelessness about the…

God is irrelevant

It is not essential to believe in God or in the historical Jesus or in Christianity. What resonates for me is a deeper meaning than prayers or ritual or litanies can provide. It is an awareness and understanding of who I am, personally, and professionally. It is in being able to think and reason and pay attention to what is real and distinguish that which is superstition or tradition. It is being willing and able to think of others, including other…

Do Your Best And God Will Do The Rest

Quotation-Leo-Tolstoy-sacrifice-vanity-Meetville-Quotes-138006

For many, many years, I have always found an unending fount of devilish giggles whenever I read sappy church signs. You know, the ones that are thought up by the honorary witty member of the church congregation that plays on puns, abuses homophones, and loves to dabble in sappy poetry attempts. What better way to market a deity than…

The Irony of a Frightened Jehovah

I was watching a profile piece on CBS Sunday Morning about actor Steve Bucemi a bit ago, when I heard that actor in one of his roles offer the following poignant observation:

Do you think God stays in heaven, because he too lives in fear of what he’s created?

If there were a god of any stripe who was responsible for the creation of Homo sapiens, I should think he’d be pissing his pants by now, and with good reason.  Ever since Yahweh made the…

A New Icon for Atheists - Frank Sinatra!

I can remember the voice of Frank Sinatra from back when I was a kid.  My father wasn't quite a fan, but he had more than a couple albums which got played regularly and which I can still recall in my head when I want to.  Certainly, Ol' Blue Eyes was a vocal technician of the first water.  His intonation, treatment of even the simplest phrase, breath control and overall execution place him deservedly in a rarefied atmosphere shared with a scant few other artists, and that by itself is…

Intellectual Dishonesty And Being Certain Gods Do Not Exist

There is nothing more aggravating than being in the middle of a discussion about the parameters of what constitutes a God, and another atheist in the discussion says to you,”You are being intellectually dishonest by saying deities absolutely do not exist.…

Demythologizing Science and Religion

The usual way of creating a myth is very straightforward: You simply take an entity as it has come to be defined in ordinary experience and grandly alter some of its basic attributes to remove its limitations.

In Christianity, for example, the god myth was created by…

From the Founding Father's of the USA

“Religions are all alike – founded upon fables and mythologies.” – Thomas Jefferson

“In no instance have . . . the churches been guardians of the liberties of the people.” – James Madison
“Lighthouses are more helpful than churches.” – Benjamin Franklin
“I beg you be persuaded that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.” – George…

Why You Can Be Certain Deities Do Not Exist

Whether you used to believe in Jesus or Yahweh, Mohammed or Allah, Krishna or Zeus, I can assure you that none exist. I will even take you further than that and guarantee they do not exist. It is all about your perception of the concept that a god/goddess is. Not a…

Creating God in One’s Own Image (discovermagazine.com)

For many religious people, the popular question “What would Jesus do?” is essentially the same as “What would I do?” That’s the message from an intriguing and controversial new study by Nicholas Epley from the University of Chicago. Through a combination of surveys, psychological manipulation and brain-scanning, he has found that when religious Americans try to infer the will of God, they mainly draw on their own personal beliefs.

Psychological studies have found that people are…

Why are you so mad?

I do not wave a sign or go running into churches screaming "Hail Satan!". I do not stomp on wooden crosses, spit on the Holy Grail, or pee on the Virgin Mary.

But

If you ask me straightforward what religion I practice or what God I believe in I will quietly and firmly let you know...I don't believe in sparkles and I don't practice fairy tales. But in a nice way.

And inevitably they have questions. Questions and questions....and oh...did I say questions.? If I happen to…

Finding Purpose Without Religion

A fellow Bunch member of mine, Ben Kervin, recently said he was "surprised" that he was feeling a lack of purpose thanks to his deconversion to atheism a couple years ago:

It's great to be free from the superstitious thinking I once had, but sometimes wonder how god belief gave me an overall…

R.I.F.

A little poetry from my perspective. Working with veterans constantly reminds of how puny the idea of a god is when amputations, loss of sight and worse are not  have no hope of restoration except for the gigantic talents of men and women that create prosthetics and perform life saving surgery.

Reduction in Force

Your attendance has been abysmal.

Your attitude leaves a lot to be desired. Your work habits have been at best inept.

You’re lucky that you…

Coming to a Head?

This one waited in the wings for me at least 20 years, but it took a gift from a well meaning friend to make it into an issue. This past December a friend of my wife gave her a Christmas gift in the form of a plaque which ended with the word’s “God Bless the Barbera’s.”

It had some other ridiculous schlock…

Wealth, treasure and thrift in the Bible

So, I listened to a little bit of Dave Ramsey today on talk radio because, well, conservative talk is about the only option in East Tennessee, and I usually prefer talk with which I disagree compared with bad pop and worse rock. If you don't know who Dave Ramsey is, he's…

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Religious believe that science theory exists just to prove that God does not exist. Religious belief is also just a theory but not to the Fundi. Truly, belief and theory are synonymous. The fighting over what “nobody knows as fact” truly is a twilight zone script. This is a rhetorical battle of imagination where everyone loses and has for over 2500 years.  How long is it to continue? Do the religious realize that science is not fighting? Science simply goes about the daily business of…
