I came out as an Atheist around two years ago. I was very lucky that I didn't lose anything by coming out, I still have all my friends and family. I know that it confused some of my friends, and I have no idea what my family really thinks about it as we have an unannounced agreement that we just don't discuss religion. So I carried on, watching Atheist Experience, The Thinking Atheist, and posting the occasional Facebook posts about some of the skeletons in Christanitys closet, so I should… Continue

As with any new thing in one's life, there is a honeymoon period where everything is perfect and life is better than it has ever been. Now consider that I came to Atheism on my own and with little or no persuasion. It took me years of becoming displeased with Christian morality, or the lack there of, before I was willing to accept foreign ideas. My family and identity was so entangled with faith that I feared I would be set outside the fold. To date, I have had very mixed reactions. I… Continue

Very bad day for me on the hole, but pertaining to what this website is about is my largest hitch.
Today i was talking to two friends i had just met about the tornado that ripped apart the high school she had gone to and that i would have gone to if it hadn't. She was talking about the people in suburbs that hid in closets and bathrooms and had survived because of it, ending her sentence with something like "now thats god." This is where things get… Continue

The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book "Exodus from Zion".
Warning: This post contains graphic descriptions of abuse.
Outside our summer programs of VBS and choir, most of the time my siblings and I played with the other kids on our block. Ryan and Justin were my brother’s age. Unfortunately, Ryan was usually grounded due to his grades, and Justin was a bully. I remember once when Justin punched me in the side of my head and my brother beat him up… Continue

"I get this question all the time from religionists. 'Isn't atheism a religion as well?' Aside from the cute responses like 'If atheism is a religion then bald is a hair color', it is really difficult for religionists to "imagine no religion". Its like they think humans cannot live without religion, so what ever they espouse, must be a religion. Here is the way I have taken to explaining it to them.
"Athiests have no imaginary friends, religionists do- its that simple. We live… Continue

I have a profile on another site. I have made some good friends there, but there is more religious drivel than I care for. I can't believe some of these idiots even try to convince you to go their way!!! Ummm, yeah, I'm going to convert because some persistent jerk is typing things at me on a screen. Right! I haven't left that site, because there are people on there that I stay in regular contact with. It's gotten so bad, that I made my page private! I can't listen to their tripe for one hot… Continue

Here in Springfield, Illinois the culture is predominantly religious based, so activities in the community that don't cost any money are awash with religious-based programs and activities that require exposure to "scripture."
I am aware of local Freethinker Meetups that gather once a month, but the last few I missed because of my work schedule. There is one Unitarian Universalist Congregation here, but I totally reject all religion and organizations that tolerate all… Continue

So, I just watched a couple of episodes of Happy Tree Friends on YouTube. I had seen an episode of that little show before, the one where the critters are swimming and dying bloodily in a pool, but that episode struck me as nothing but pointless gore, so I wrote the series off as nothing but an unimaginative excuse to show blood and guts.
Now, probably around six months to a year later, I watch it again and actually see some intelligence in this show. There's cleverness to the… Continue

I’m reading a book that is so good, so interesting, that I’ve highlighted almost every sentence. It’s a gold mine of ideas and information, a real treat to read.
If you looked at my book list
, you’ll notice that I haven’t read all the “traditional” books that all other atheists seem to love. That’s not to say that I won’t, but I became an atheist when most of those books didn’t exist.
Once I… Continue

The following is a note I wrote on facebook for my friends there (posted yesterday, 7/27/08), but I thought I'd cross-post it here... Maybe you all have some good feedback.
Why is Robby an Atheist / Bright / Humanist? And what does it all mean?
I know many of my friends and acquaintances may have noticed my "religious views" here on facebook and may or may not be surprised/shocked/horrified. If you haven't yet noticed, let me put it all out there: I don't believe in any sort… Continue

This past weekend I met up with a longtime friend, in fact, the lengthiest friend I have. In fact, the very first friend who I met in the United States, on my first day of school in this country. It's amazing that we still keep in touch even after 19 years and him moving to Atlanta, then me moving to Pittsburgh, then him moving to Boston, then me joining the Marine Corps, and yet we still think that keeping our friendship alive is worth a plane ticket or a 500 mile drive.
The thing… Continue
