Freethinkers and Skeptics In Ancient Literature Part I: Thersites the Contrarian

As an outlet for the repressed literature student in me, I'm starting up this new series that focuses on characters in ancient Western literature who show some sign of skepticism or freethinking. By extension I'll also show the quacks, charlatans or authorities they dare to annoy with their tiresome voices of…

Naturalism, another philosophy to consider

Are you a Naturalist? If you believe that existence encompasses everything, that there’s nothing supernatural, that our best knowledge is gleaned from scientific effort, then you very well may be a naturalist! The word derives from ‘nature’ and the definition is simple – “nature is all there is, and all basic truths are truths of nature”.…

The Bait, The Hook, and Deism

January 28, 2002, AACHAT... The Bait, the Hook, and Deism.

Deists are not atheists, they definitely believed in a god, and this has never been a secret. Even so, Atheists should count Thomas Paine and other Deists as friends and allies.

Religion has two aspects, the Bait and the Hook. There are lots of different kinds of bait. Relief from fear of death or misfortune, relief from loneliness by means of an imaginary companion, art,…

Handicapping the Human Mind

Religious teachings are critically flawed as a means of determining what is true. The value of the stories and the intuitions they promote are essentially subjective and thus relative to a person or group, while science has been distilled to universal strength.

Given a problem--say, what is the speed of sound in a vacuum?--anyone with the necessary technology and tools can answer it. Given a well-defined problem, the scientific answers will agree. (In the case of sound in a…

Mother's day reminisces from a Freethought Mom

Now that my children are ‘emancipated’ - my baby turned 21 this year - I’ve been thinking back over the years, musing about my motherhood experiences.

I started late and had no real mother role model, so I had to learn the ropes as I went along. Luckily my daughter was born an adult, and remained an adult until 14, when she transformed into the evil teen from hell – for exactly 2 yrs – at which

time she returned to her more customary state of perfection. (Well, except… Continue

Freethought Quotations

“Fear believes—courage doubts. Fear falls upon the earth and prays—courage stands erect and thinks. Fear retreats—courage advances. Fear is barbarism—courage is civilization. Fear believes in witchcraft, in devils and in ghosts. Fear is religion, courage is science.”

FAN MADE VIDEO FOR FREETHOUGHT M.C. SONG,"MODERN HUMANOLOGY" - 2009

Thank you to the fan in Germany - who has chosen to have their name withheld - for using my pictures and creating this wonderful masterpiece. BRILLIANT!!

By the way, that verse WAS done intentional; I did not mess up and there was no edting error. That verse goes: ...."wake up and enjoy my life each and every single day; said I'm gonna wake up and enjoy my life every and each single day...(that's my own Humanology...)". I "flipped" the words, just because it sounded… Continue

Calling all Texas Aggie Atheists, past & present.

I am working on starting up an A|N group for Texas A&M Former students who are also atheists. There are a lot of Aggies out there, of course, but how many of us are nonbelievers? I'd like to know and meet you. I'm TAMU Class of 1993 and was a member of outfit Trident P-2.

We hear all about the famous "Aggie Network", but does it really work for you if you're an atheist, or a Libertarian instead of a Republican, or worse, you're a goddless lefty liberal like yours… Continue
