What's Atheism Got To Do With It? Why Automatically Tagging Philosophy To Atheism Is A Bad Idea.

"So, you're an atheist. What does that mean other than you think you are a gift to the world?"

"How can you call yourself an atheist and support abortion?"

"Atheist men tend to be misogynists."

"Where do you get the right to determine what is right or not? You're an…

Why You Can Be Certain Deities Do Not Exist

Whether you used to believe in Jesus or Yahweh, Mohammed or Allah, Krishna or Zeus, I can assure you that none exist. I will even take you further than that and guarantee they do not exist. It is all about your perception of the concept that a god/goddess is. Not a…

The Book Of Life

I have been often troubled by the many mortal human attitudes and behaviors many different deities have taken on in various holy texts. Petty emotions like jealously, bigotry, hate, anger, and lust, to name a few. All of these…

We Are Just Animated Pieces Of Meat

If you haven’t read the recent Daily Mail piece by A.N. Wilson, I would recommend you do so to follow along with what I am about to go on about. Some of you might already be familiar with his emotional appeal drivel for Christ and might be able to save yourself the agony of reading more of his…

The Tequila Rant: Gluten Free meets Trainwreck Barbie

Seriously, I have a split personality when it comes to the "tequila". Just one smidgen, and the tragedy is on. One drink, just one, has forced me to move to new cities to protect my honor. Mechanical bull stripping, the accidental blowjobs, sleeping with the boss, not to mention the inevitable injuries from when I try to prove I can do anything. I always seem to leave the party laughing, but wake up with mysterious bruises and memories of cartwheels, climbing trees and swimming all…

Sex and atheism: Greta Christina educates us

I continue to chafe at some of the so-called intellectuals on Free Thought Blogs continually referring to atheism as a "movement" and associating it with all these other causes that actual nonbelievers have every right to care about or not. I happen to think that supporting equal rights with no preference given to either gender is a positive thing, and this is why I have a reservations about feminism. I happen to think that a progressive view of politics is the best way to move society…

The Bankruptcy of the Free Will Defense

Intro:

In the philosophical competition of worldviews many Christians use the "free will defense" as a way to excuse their god's apparent moral negligence in this world. Supposedly the value of free will is greater than whatever evils may result from establishing moral beings who have this opportunity to do both good and evil and suffer or profit as a result of it. I've taken the liberty of assembling all of my analysis of this popular move of theirs. Enjoy.…

#twitterblackout today January 28 2012

Since i am o ff twitter today, i figured i would blog a little in a bit more than 140 chars. So here we go. Add to that, that this cultural interaction takes place in a very public space that is equally available directly to the "followers" of the individuals taking…

Emergent Properties of the Human Brain (continued)

In these discussions about self-determinism, some hard determinists dismissively parade opinion as fact. Their conviction trumps their rational integrity. We all need to be mindful that just about everything to do with free will and determinism is, thus far, a matter of opinion.

Almost 400 years ago, René Descartes claimed that, unlike the human body, the mind has no physical properties or spatial dimension: thus it can not be examined in the same way as the physical body. Today, we…

Three Conundrums of Free Will

Introduction:

I've grown disappointed with philosophers on the subject of free will. The great philosophers of the past knew nothing about the brain. Modern philosophers contradict each other. What I've been trying to do is to stick with the knowledge we have and avoid philosophical entanglements and conjecture as much as possible. However, certain philosophical conundrums must be addressed, such as: (1) the false dichotomy of free will versus causality; (2)…

Self-determinism: Manipulating events

The Internet is amazing. It hosts media of all kinds. Anybody can communicate with anybody. And you can find out anything you want to know. It's huge and complex but we don't need to understand how it works to know that it does. In the same way, we don't need to understand how the brain works to know that it does. Its electro-chemical machinations, while interesting, aren't necessary to understand in order to know that the brain deliberates. That's what it does.

Neuroscience can't yet…

Dancing with Causality: Purposeful Steps

Dancing with Causality: Purposeful Steps

Free will, in the form of self-determinism, is only a big mystery if you allow your thinking to be governed by the centuries of philosophers who have never managed to figure it out. They've been arguing in circles because they've defined "free will" to fit their premises. This is because they…

I'M REALLY TICKED OFF NOW!!!!

I’m really ticked off now…..BIG TIME!

Last night I expected all the “rapture”  yahoo’s to be gone.  All I expected to find was a bunch

of clothes, empty house, apartments, mobile homes and the like.  Cars just left on the street with the keys in them.

I had planned to go out looting. I was gonna clean up with the cash they left…

My Father's Funeral, an Atheist's Funeral.

A few weeks ago my father passed away. Like me he was an Atheist. Like me he had been one since he was a young man. I was six when I “became” one, or rather realized, like with Santa, the Easter Bunny,

ghosts and all, it was all made up.

So in keeping with my father’s wishes we had a non-religious funeral.  I gave the eulogy. I spoke about his life.  What he had…

Free will?

Free will is an interesting topic that you don't see many atheists talking about when arguing against the validity of the god of the Bible. However, I personally, used it as a springboard into atheism and think that others should learn a little bit about the lack of existence of free will. Let me explain.

Free will does not exist if people cannot act and could not have acted any other way than they do. However, free will appears to exist because there is an illusion that we…

Charles Chilton Moore: The father of American atheism

In celebration of Freedom of Speech Week (observed October 18-24), I would like to illuminate the life of one of America's first prominent, outspoken atheists, Charles Chilton Moore, a man who was jailed for blasphemy because the sensitive Bible Belt dwellers of his time just couldn't stomach a little competition.

When one considers prominent United States atheists, depending on the social circles with which one regularly associates, the list is likely to be…
