Paul Hawken, What's Carbon Got to Do With It?

I first ran across Paul Hawken and his writing in 1977 and have been a fan ever since. I had been watching the economic markets for several years and used an old high school typewriter to record my alarm at what was happening to the economy. Because of what the markets revealed and because of writings by some economist, I began watching for a financial crash, especially in the 1980s when I had my first computer. It sits in my sunroom upstairs, idle for many years and with no services to…

My response to a beloved cousin who recently appeared on my doorstep.

As you are well aware, I express my thoughts and feelings as honestly as I can, and it gets me into more problems than need to occur. In my 78 years of living, I gained nothing by remaining silent in face of what confronts me. I paid a terrible price for remaining silent when I should have screamed at the top of my lungs, and sadly, my kids paid the price for my cowardice.

I don’t mean to imply that remaining silent is cowardice in all…

Ravaging the Planet for Our Own Amusement

Another A/N blogger, Richard Goscicki, has eloquently written on the connection between religion and the destruction of our planet.  Let us count the ways.

Time is wasted in religious ritual and obsessing over ancient texts.  Religious wars and terrorism carry on a constant slaughter of humans and destruction of resources.  Religious teachings – that contraception is wrong, that man is not descended from animals but is special, that we are meant to have total dominion over nature…all…

My Thoughts On The Environment

I like to compare the Earth and its Environment to a Fish Bowl and its Environment.

Both are contained Environments, Both Environments are affected by the number of

Life Forms in them and Both  Environments are affected by the amount of pollution in

them.

You may say that the Earth is much bigger and, in being so, allows it to handle the

detrimental effects thrust upon it. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The Earth

can not get rid of the life that is living…

hanging laundry outside is controversial? are you serious???

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20091118/us_nm/us_usa_laundry

I know most people don't hang their laundry outside anymore, but I had always thought it was just b/c they're lazy.

It saves a ton of money and energy, but people are too concerned with their own vanity ("it looks trailer trash") to tolerate. People objecting to the sight of someone else's undergarments is very Victorian. (Look away, then.) The… Continue

The Brain, the Whole Brain and Nothing but the Brain

This blog post stems from another discussion (elsewhere) that segued into the topic of mind versus brain. In order to illustrate that the mind is more than just the brain, I described the following scenario . . .

What would it be like if you were born completely paralyzed, with a normal brain but without a sensory nervous system to deliver stimuli to your brain from your sensory organs? Would it be possible to think or to have memories? In what ways could you be considered… Continue

Pioneer in Sustainability, Economic Visionary, Fortune 500 CEO: Ray Anderson

In the world of changing business, when everyone is slapping the word Green on the side of their packages, Ray Anderson, CEO of Fortune 500 Company Interface Carpets, is setting the example for substantive change toward sustainability in business. The self proclaimed recovering plunderer, motivated by his epiphany of wrong doing, turned his high polluting, petroleum-based carpet company into a beacon for the direction of future business.

In a talk given at the 2009 TED Convention,… Continue

An Afterlife Worth Dying For

I live in a world full of faith and fear. I do not believe and I am not afraid. I always found it interesting that atheists I know are often the bravest people I know. Is it because the fear of having no god and no afterlife makes people panic?

This Earth is supported by billions(or trillions) of life forms or organisms. In nature, there are cycles, elements, touch, beauty, scent, reality, and crude, unaltered truth. Nature does not lie to us or deceive us. It nurtures, houses, and… Continue

Another skeptical semester begins

Tomorrow our semester starts back, which means I have to return to the classroom. It is always hard to go back after a semester break. For me the dread is not because of teaching - necessarily - but because of all the useless wastes of time that accompany a semester in term. Faculty meetings rise to the top of the hate list. Perhaps I'll do more blogging during faculty meetings this time around... I think that helps.

Anyway, this semester I'm teaching a course on the environment,… Continue
