Software that supports community discussions

I have used lots of different software for holding discussions: phpBB, vBulletin, Wordpress and similar blogging stuff, facebook and so on. I have found a number of common features that facilitate and make discussion more powerful and features that damp down the ability to hold discussions. For a community like Atheist Network it would be difficult to change existing software, it would be a matter of lobbying the group that produce it. Is it worth the effort? Lets discuss this a bit further… Continue

Online Discussions and Logical Fallacies

Don't worry. This post will not list and define the many types of logical fallacies that exist. I’m not expert enough for that and I’m too lazy to Google the research necessary. What I hope to do is describe some observations about logical fallacies garnered from blogs and forums from around the Internet.

Cenroship – and lack of it

Here in the UK your humble blogger had a word ("Muzzies") censored on a discussion list. It was used in much the same way as one might use "fundies" or "God botherers". the ironic thing was, it was a discussion list of an association of gay and lesbian humanists, the very sort of group that is, or should be, against religious privilege, not averse to a bit of mild piss-taking and in favour of free speech (short of gratuitous offence and racism, of course, which this was not). I was even accused… Continue

Talking Atheism and Dawkins with a police chaplain

I don't know exactly how this will go, but I have a lot of respect for this man. I've known him for 4 1/2 years now. I forget how the subject came up at all, but yesterday (seeing as it's now 2am) I 'came out' as an Atheist to him. He seemed rather surprised. (Seeing as I live in Georgia most people are surprised. I'm not shy about my beliefs. I don't shout about them, but when presented with an opportunity I gladly share my views.) He also teaches courses at a local college to do with religion… Continue
