Slavery in the Bible

The right to own slaves runs deeply in our history, creates traditions that benefit some while harming others. The moral teaching of the bible supports slavery in both the old and new version. To pretend that christianity supported abolition of slavery is to deny history and delude oneself into thinking that the scriptures are a fit place upon which to build…

Natural desasters as signs of a god: the difference between rhetorically skilled priests and the general public

As we all know 2 weeks ago a disaster has hit Japan. Over 10.000 people are dead, people are fighting against a nuclear meltdown in Fukushima.

Why did all this happen? Was it a natural disaster? Was it the plan of a god? Did a god merely allow it to happen?

The problems of theodicy (bad things happening despite the supposed existence of a merciful and caring god) are old. And of course the standard answer to all is a typical "god might have a plan, we do not… Continue

Stephen Asma's critique on the new atheists and the battle thereafter

Stephen Asma wrote a piece about the "New Atheists narrow worldview". Give it a try.

According to these soldiers of reason, the time for religion is over. It clings like a bad gene replicating in the population, but its usefulness is played out. Sam Harris's most recent book, The Moral Landscape (Free Press, 2010), is the latest in the continuing battle. As an agnostic, I find much…

Hellfire and Buggery Part II: Crazy goes to Crazytown!!

Immediately following on from my last blog, about how I'd posted a video on Facebook about Homosexuality and Christianity, received one angry message from a Christian who promptly de-friended me (how shall I ever live with myself ? ? ? ) - someone began commenting on the video.

Turns out - as you'll see - he's something of a spiritual, new age kind with a penchant for CRAZY and lists, LOTS of lists… Continue

The Truth about Faith

The natural realm is the universe and everything in it. The supernatural realm is, by definition, outside the natural realm, so nobody knows, or can know, anything whatsoever about the supernatural. The natural realm is physical; evidence for it is literally everywhere. The supernatural realm is pure conjecture and absolutely unsupported by physical evidence of any kind. The supernatural is, therefor, not scientifically testable.

However, supernatural claims… Continue

Richard Dawkins Book Signing

Richard Dawkins is a well known atheist who has written many books, namely The God Delusion. So when he came to Atlanta this past Easter Sunday for a speech and book signing I knew I had to be there. It was the annual American Atheist National Convention that Richard Dawkins blessed us with his presence. His speech was exceptional.

Quote mining became a new topic of discussion this time around. A new term, the quote mining index, indicate how often a quote will be mined out of… Continue

"As If" - Deconstructing Religious Memes

Here's an essay that I submitted to Broowaha Los Angeles. Enjoy! ~~~~~~~~~~~

What happens when believers and nonbelievers start to debate religion?

The first thing that is placed on the table is a covert acceptance of the religious person’s beliefs. How so? This happens the moment that a nonbeliever acknowledges and uses the words that the believer is using.

Acknowledgement, recognition, and understanding implicitly support an argument, no matter what it… Continue

How to get through to believers

Understanding causality, who can justify condemning believers for believing, since they were after all, shaped, molded, and ultimately conditioned to believe just as non-believers where conditioned to not believe? Yet, we just can’t stand by watching them fritter their lives away being motivated, moved, and ultimately being hijacked by this contagious and dangerous god meme. Why can’t we? Because to survive as a species we need to acknowledge and address reality. We can’t just stand by, because… Continue

Riaz Ahmed Shah: i would like to see god grow an amputated limb back!

We'll yeah, that is the standard response to the god-freaks that should shut them up. But...

I've known this guy for years at my local. We've never discussed either religion or politics. Just talk pub crap, like sport.

One day, the discussion strayed into… Continue
