When Secular Children Fly Solo At Church

This weekend was a personal test for my parenting. As an atheist parent, I am pretty adamant in presenting both sides of an argument and using context when discussing religious belief with my kids. The only confirmation of how fair of a job I am doing is when the kids end up in awkward…

A Query to Political Candidates Regarding Separation of Religion and Government

This post is prepared specifically for political candidates concerning their positions on policy issues related to church-state separation.  It is adapted from The Reason Revolution: Atheism, Secular Humanism, and the Collapse of Religion, a short, free e-book available at dandana.us/atheism

The number of nontheistic Americans is now about 20% of the general population (higher among those with college degrees), and is…

Do Your Best And God Will Do The Rest

Quotation-Leo-Tolstoy-sacrifice-vanity-Meetville-Quotes-138006

For many, many years, I have always found an unending fount of devilish giggles whenever I read sappy church signs. You know, the ones that are thought up by the honorary witty member of the church congregation that plays on puns, abuses homophones, and loves to dabble in sappy poetry attempts. What better way to market a deity than…

NWO, Illuminati, Blood Moons, And Hot Dogs: Practicing Political Atheism While Living In A Zealously Theistic Country

It seems over the last decade we have more things to be afraid of.

Between the advent of engineered disease, and surreptitious attacks of mind boggling computer viruses that could potentially bring down banking systems globally, it would seem we need to look at everything we…

Jesus will never disappoint you” – Church sign boldly states religion’s Big Lie

“All religions are the same.  Religion is basically guilt, with different holidays.”

Cathy Ladman

"Praying is like a rocking chair.  It’ll give you something to do, but it won’t get you anywhere.”

Gypsy Rose Lee

Church signs are a never-ending source of wonder and speculation for us humanists: assuming that there is nowadays an endless source of them (the Internet assures an endless supply of…

Get God out of Government!

"Question with boldness even the existence of a god; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blindfolded fear."

Moving Forward in a post-religious world

I want to thank everyone for their support.  I feel very welcome.  I am receiving a lot of support from new found friends as well.  Although I have not the courage to overtly state my opinion to everyone in my family, I also think it is not necessary that they all need to know right away.  I have been very open about it in public and most of those people are either indifferent, agnostic or atheist themselves.  I am a little shocked by this realization.  I was under the impression that so…

Putting Abandoned Quebec Churches to Good Use

The Days When The Church Ruled

This is the first time I was ever in a city where you couldn't throw a brick without breaking a church window. Yet I was told that you were going to build one more. I said the scheme is good, but where are you going to find room? They said, we…

South Korean Enemy #1: Lady Gaga

Image of G'd burned in our brains as children

Gwen (a fraudulent friend of my late mother)  asked me why did I hate G'd so much.  I asked, who told you that I hated G'd?  When did I say that and where did I say that?  Gwen told me, well you don't go to church, you don't worship Jesus.  I knew where Gwen was going with this and I turned the tables on her.  I said the following.

First of all, get your facts straight before you come to me with bullshit.  Let's address this Jesus thang, shall we? Where does it say from the OT…

christian propaganda

Hello fellow free thinkers, I was recently at a local muncipal government health clinic. There on a stand with information purtaining to the clinic, and it's services was a stack of issues from a local, "community monthly publication". The title is: "Changing Times", and evident by the cross accompaning the title, and the content within; this is a christian publication! This clinic is run by the local municipality, which in turn is part of the state's department of health & hospitals,…

Heaven On It's Head

"In a world that is really upside down, the true is a moment of the false."- Guy Debord, Society of the Spectacle

What is an interesting quandary amid Christians is the heaven factor. It appears everyone wants to go; however, no one's in a rush to get there; a spark of revelation; could be.…

Atheistic Liberalism vs. Non-theistic Community

This post is prompted by some discussions among members of a local atheist group about building an atheist community.

My ideas orignate from several months of thought on the subject of community.  A recent discussion thread in the groups online forum included descriptions of an Oregon-based community youth church, comments about the Flatirons Community Church (currently the second largest church in Colorado, based on weekly attendance), and another member's advocacy for recreating…

The c-word

I refuse to capitalize christian/christianity (unless it begins a sentence). It’s not that I don’t respect your right to believe as you please, in fact if you are truly a christian I respect your beliefs and would like the same in return. What I don’t respect, and in fact resent, is the level at which christianity is ever increasingly being shoved down the throats of those of us who don’t happen to subscribe.  Christianity is used as a vehicle to dictate cessation of behavior that you… Continue

My Atheism Doesn’t Need Evolution

Atheists are often portrayed as die hard believers in evolution, and atheism is quite often portrayed as being dependent upon believing in the validity of evolution. But you know what? Some people, such as myself, did not need to rely on Darwin to steer our courses off the path of religion and onto the path of reason.

Consider:

The bible was not created by a god nor inspired by the word of any god. It was written by a number of people who tried…

Valid and Invalid Beliefs: The Pope and Other Carlatans

Over the past week I have engaged a number of christians on Twitter, and it seems as though evidence for beliefs, and specifically, what is it that makes beliefs valid or invalid. So I want to address directly the nature of valid and invalid beliefs, and then would like to shift my focus to one tweeter in particular and the pope and some comments he recently made.

Because christians and atheists always seem to start running into problems here, each criticizing the other of not having… Continue
