How Much Good Can You Do? There's A Calculator For That.

Oxford University ethics professor Toby Ord encourages people to donate 10 percent of their incomes to charities, and has posted an online calculator that is supposed to show you the good that can be done with this amount. Even though the '10%' amount sounds like the xian 'tithe,' nowhere in the article is religion mentioned. Perhaps this could be the humanist equivalent? Here's the link:… Continue

On the 47% and the semantics of victimhood

“..a wise and frugal government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, which shall leave them free to otherwise to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned.  This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.”

Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801

“When an American asks for the…

Update about the school project

Hello my friends on Atheist Nexus, am updating you on the progress of the school project.

Normal lessons are being conducted and towards the middle of May, we received a volunteer at the school to orientate both our teachers and the students on computer skills. The program is already in progress and our students are so excited and fully committed towards attaining these skills.

The Godless Poutine based in Canada is running a one o one interview of both the School Director, The…

Do You Have Any Questions For Missionaries or Atheist Charity Workers?

Dear reader,

I need your help and advice.

Awhile ago I heard about Seth Andrews' $30,000 Atheist Charity Drive. Before that I had heard about the Foundation Beyond Belief and other pre-existing secular charities.

While thinking about this, an idea entered my mind. Why not reach out to…

Greed, Wealth, Anger and Envy

The "Occupy Wallstreet" movement is no longer dominating headlines but I still find people debating the "haves" and the "have-nots" and what to do about them. Like most in the Occupy Wallstreet movement, I'm a political independent. I consider myself moderate: a centrist with beliefs spanning both liberal and conservative ideals. I saw a list of 18 demands allegedly made by Occupy Wall Street but their official website denies there are…

Check out KIVA!

For those of you looking for a way to help others, check out Kiva at www.kiva.org. Kiva is an organization that provides microloans to entrepreneurs to help start businesses to support themselves and their families or communities. Once the business is up and running, the borrower pays back the loan, and that money can then be loaned out to another person.

We athiests are often put down by the religious as being cold and uncaring. Guess what…

What to do with the WBC.

StumbleUpon brought me to a video I greatly enjoy.

As I'm sure everyone here is acutely aware of, the Westboro Baptist Church is a despicable hate group hungry for media attention to spread their message. If they end up coming to your town or school to protest, this video suggests a positive way of defeating their efforts.…

My atheist group is in need

Hi everyone from Atheist Nexus! About half of the members of my group, the Greensboro Atheist Organization, seem to express an interest in

the activism side of the group. While non religious people make up

about 15% of the population and growing we still face huge equal rights

issues. I'm happy to say that we're working on some things for these

people in addition to our normal social activities, but we can't do it

without your help. The Greensboro Atheist Organization… Continue

Washington State

Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places. I just can't seem to find any local atheist groups that focus on doing charitable work or supporting equality in my community. Another poster pointed out that among the 200 organizations that recently supported Washington Families Standing Together, a group that campaigned to protect domestic partnerships in my state, there wasn't a single organization of non-believers on the… Continue

Stalking UU

I don't know what the heck I am thinking. I am totally atheistic and kind of hostile to religion in general, and xtianity specifically. The last time I semi-willingly went to a church was a midnight mass at Our Lady of Concrete, in order to please the parents of my first ex-wife. Needless to say, I was not married in a church either time, and the second time avoided any mention of the G-word, save a brief reading from Ecclesiastes, or something, to avoid the tittering of the extra-xtian family… Continue

Do we really need to rid of ourselves of everything that is based in religion? Are there ideas from religion we should keep?

Following a conversation in chat today I thought I'd open up a discussion. I've had a look around the site and can't find a thread addressing this issue, if one exists please feel free to point me in the right direction.

I come from a catholic family where 'doing unto others', was ingrained in how we were raised. It is a 'belief' I choose to subscribe to. I try to make sure I don't adversely affect those around me and strive to consider the affect of my actions on others. This idea… Continue

Don't Pray for her

One of my friends was raped by her brother this morning. I feel pretty damn useless. I mean, right after it happened when she texted me, there was stuff I could do. Like call 911 and get them out there, contact her boyfriend, advise her not to shower or bathe till she'd had the rape kit. But there's really NOTHING I can say that will make this situation suck any less.

I remember why I wished prayer was true now. Because I wanted to have something to offer when someone was in pain I… Continue
