Oy, vey! GM shoots itself in the other foot

“The more you want people to have creative ideas and solve problems, the less you can afford to manage them with terror.”

Daniel Greenberg

Chairman, Electro Rent Corp.

Newsweek, 4/25/88

“American management, in the two decades after world War II, was universally admired for its strikingly effective performance.  But times change.  An approach shaped and refined during stable decades may be ill suited…

Book Review: Overthrow by Stephen Kinzer

No Pontius Pilate's Here

In the story of Jesus' crucifixion, Pontius Pilate acted as judge in the trial. Pilate actually lobbied the crowd to spare Jesus' life, but the crowd would not relent. Seeing that the crowd would have its way, Pilate made a great show of washing his…

Dancing Pigs

Now, for something different! I wrote this story four years ago for a Dallas magazine because for some reason stripping and strip clubs received a face-lift over the past decade. That was the reason for the following piece. I knew most of…

Latino? Hispanic? The Power of a Political Artifact

“Ranting about ‘white male workplaces’ ignores the realities of class, personality differences and poor management practices.”

Frederick Lynch, “The Diversity Machine: the Drive to Change the ‘White Male Workplace,’ 1997

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

Martin Luther…

Chicken Little and Gay Skys

My heyday came and went years ago. It was a time when people were in the streets protesting the fat cats, the Vietnam War, and politicians. We were empowered to scare the shit out my father's generation that wanted everything to go back to the "Good Old Days." It didn't, at least temporarily. Now many of those that dodged the draft because of rich families have become the fat cats, the war mongers and politicians. Perhaps, that is merely the way of the world as the dregs always seem to make… Continue

Atheist Mary Kay Consultant working to make a difference

I have been in Mary Kay cosmetics for 3 years and grew up in a fundamentalist Christian home. I have been an atheist for about 8 months now and have become frustrated. Growing up only knowing religious people has made this transition hard for me but more so in my business. I have had to change my weekly meetings because my director is too preachy. It never used to bother me, but the moment I came to understand that there is no god,…

Marjoe

I think religion is a drug. Can God deliver a religion addict? (laughs)

This is not a Marx quote. These are the words of Marjoe, in his biographical documentary film which I learned about from youtuber gogreen18 -a brilliant atheist and ex-Mormon-, tells the story of a child who was raised to be a preacher and began preaching at age 4. In it, he…

Public Education in the United States of America

It's a crazy conspiracy theory that education is deliberately stifled in the U.S. right? Wrong. First and foremost, I was never taught critical thinking skills in District 186 in Springfield, Illinois. I was never even taught that there was such a think as "critical thinking" until I went to college.

So, what purpose is served by deliberately limiting or suppressing knowlege?

A primary law of economy states that a product's value is inverse to it's available quantity. In… Continue

Pioneer in Sustainability, Economic Visionary, Fortune 500 CEO: Ray Anderson

In the world of changing business, when everyone is slapping the word Green on the side of their packages, Ray Anderson, CEO of Fortune 500 Company Interface Carpets, is setting the example for substantive change toward sustainability in business. The self proclaimed recovering plunderer, motivated by his epiphany of wrong doing, turned his high polluting, petroleum-based carpet company into a beacon for the direction of future business.

In a talk given at the 2009 TED Convention,… Continue

Laisse Faire Capitalism

I would like to disabuse some of you of the idea that the decimation of the economy is the fault of free market Capitalism.

What you have been witnessing is not the result of free market capitalism but rather the purchase by those whose best interest is served to influence those that can choose not to enforce laws that are already in place.

Now maybe what's popping into your head about now is "Well there you go, less regulation has resulted in more corruption." In a… Continue

Forbes magazine, creationists and the good of the stakeholders

Having written for a business magazine, I'm baffled about Forbes publishing a trio of anti-Darwin rants on a seemingly random whim. And I have a few thoughts on the subject, most of them very negative. Forbes might be undermining its reputation and hurting the interests of its stakeholders by allowing ID friendly editors to use their media soapbox as a bully pulpit.

Great Business Idea for Atheists Everywhere!

This falls into the category of Why Didn't *I* think of that!?
I wrote about this great business idea at Heaving Dead Cats. Basically it is helping "good" christians with a very much needed service. It's brilliant!
