Free Will Without Dualism

Reductionism

I hope to persuade hard (absolute) determinists that their position is based on a false dichotomy. Determinism does not preclude free will. It's not either/or: there are other possibilities. I am presenting, here, one of those other possibilities. It's a model based on reciprocal causality. It doesn't claim to have proof: we know too little about the brain to prove how any…

TWO WORLDS CONVERGE part three

In both of science and religions areas of my life, I have many more experiences that added to both my understanding of the natural world and understanding about Christianity and religion. In high school, I was fortunate to take almost every science class that was offered. I even became a science proctor, [that is a teacher's aide or assistant]. The classes I took included: General Science, Biology,(two years) Chemistry, Astronomy, Physics, and Zoology. The only two classes I didn't take that…

God In Chaos; Chapter Seven; RELIGION SHINES ITS LIGHT part twenty-seven

Religion has truly surpassed the power of every invention that has followed it. As the

Bronze Age, Iron age, middle ages, the age of enlightenment and the

Modern ages have come and gone and gone, religion has been the enemy of

progress every step of the way. To the faithful, things like the Hubble

Space Telescope, nuclear weapons, and climate change are nothing

compared to the power of a faith that believes in a god. If anything man can… Continue

Atheist Authors, Biology, and Physics

I would like to read more books about Atheism and also some about sciences so I can understand and know more about what scientist are discovering. I only know of the basics of subjects such as evolution and the big bang theory. But I want to know what other things scientists are saying about our origins and get a deeper understanding about what little I do know. Does anyone have any Atheist authors or books about any of these things? Hopefully in the form of an ebook or article? I can't go to… Continue

Haven't Updated in Awhile

It's been awhile, so I thought I'd post a little something to let my AN friends know I'm still around. I also just took some sleeping meds, so this will be short and it may be somewhat incoherent. Fun!

I've been busy with school, mostly. I'm getting my nursing prereqs done right now and my workload is pretty intense. I'm taking two lab sciences, biology and chemistry, as well as a general psychology class that requires 15 hours of "service learning" (basically, community… Continue

Creationism, You Gotta Be Kiddin'

When I was teaching biology in the late ‘60s, I’m trying to picture what would have happened if a colleague came up to me and asked if I were teaching the biblical account of creation. It was after all a Catholic school.

I’m trying to think of what I would have replied if my job weren’t on the line. As tennis great John McEnroe liked to yell, “You can’t be serious. You want me to teach the story of Adam and Eve and the talking snake in a science class? How about Shadrach, Meshach,… Continue

Accept it: Talk about evolution needs to evolve by Eugenie Scott

So you urge scientists not to say that they “believe” in evolution?!

Right. What your audience hears is more important than what you say.… What [people] hear is that evolution is a belief, it’s an opinion, it’s not well-substantiated science. And that is something that scientists need to avoid communicating.

You believe in God. You believe your sports team is going to win. But you don’t believe in cell division. You don’t believe in thermodynamics. Instead, you… Continue

Biology of just failng in teaching?

Check this out: NewScientist.com

After reading the article I can tell you that my High School and College educations have done little to improve people's understanding of natural phenomena. I don't know if I agree with the conclusion of the study that there may be a hardwired component to believe in a purpose driven existence or if it is, as… Continue

Welcome to the first Weekly Science Roundup. These regular posts will consist of quick summaries of interesting papers, articles, and blog posts which I encounter during the preceding week (sometimes they may have been published earlier). The number of items that I mention will vary, and there will be an obvious bias…
