Hitchens in Hell.... "God is going to give us what we insist on having"

Could anybody make the points in "god Is Not Great" any better than the followers of god?

The sad state of muslims (a generalization)

I do ask people to understand the following NOT as an insult but rather as an expression of deep sadness about the current state of things....

Frithjof Schuon once wrote:
"The intellectual - and thereby the rational - foundation of Islam results in the average Muslim having a curious tendency to believe that non-Muslims either know that Islam is the truth and reject it out of pure obstinacy, or else are simply ignorant of it and can be converted by elementary explanations; that…

Natural desasters as signs of a god: the difference between rhetorically skilled priests and the general public

As we all know 2 weeks ago a disaster has hit Japan. Over 10.000 people are dead, people are fighting against a nuclear meltdown in Fukushima.

Why did all this happen? Was it a natural disaster? Was it the plan of a god? Did a god merely allow it to happen?

The problems of theodicy (bad things happening despite the supposed existence of a merciful and caring god) are old. And of course the standard answer to all is a typical "god might have a plan, we do not… Continue

Arabic antisemitism - forget Muhammad cartoons

Whenever "insults" against Islam come up i hear complaints by Muslims that people don't respect their prophet, don't respect Allah and don't respect the Arabic culture (being the main classical home location of that religion).…

Sometimes I can't decide if you're a really bad Christian, or a really good one

It's a popular topic, in my neck of the woods, the sort of thing people like to titter and gossip about: who's a good Christian, and who isn't. It seems, though, that the more 'Christian love' I'm subjected to, though, the harder time I have differentiating between just who is a bad Christian, or a really good one.

This post will probably ultimately turn out to be half stream-of-consciousness, half rant, rather than any sort of significant prose on the issue, but never… Continue

Race is an obsolete concept

I grew up in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It's no teeming metropolis, mostly suburban but it's far from a rural community. My schools were always at least 50% African-American (in junior high it was 90%). I must say that I think I was lucky. I was an intelligent white boy in the poverty-stricken inner city...well as much as you can call Spartanburg a city, that is. I never in 12 years saw 2 people fight or not get along because of their race. Asian, whites, blacks, latinos-all had their friends… Continue

When Atheists Go Bad

We pride ourselves, here on Atheist Nexus (and in other atheist forums), on being intelligent, rational, educated human beings. We also, in the main, abhor those religious views which lead to racism, sexism, homophobia and other irrational prejudices.

But, as we move forward from being a 'philosophical stance' into a 'movement', should we, can we, and, if so, how can we, distinguish ourselves from atheists who have abandoned belief in God, but not irrationality and… Continue

St Vincent de Paul dismisses christian worker for not being catholic

I have heard of American companies being allowed to employ only those staff that are Christian, but this story reported by David Marr on Vinnies in Queensland has me taken aback.

I have had dealings with St Vincent de Paul and like all church organisations there is a bit of infighting however…

In January 2004 an ultimatum was delivered by the society’s diocesan president for Gold Coast, Peter Richards. [Linda Walsh] had until June to become a Catholic, resign her… Continue

Westboro Baptist Church Plans to Picket Funerals of the Eight Avalanche Victims in Fernie, BC

Those … well, there’s no cuddly way to say it. Those bastards at the Westboro Baptist Church are at it again. On Monday, eight men were killed in an avalanche in Fernie, BC while enjoying a day of snowmobiling. Fred Phelps and his band of deluded psychos wasted no time and issued this press release (page is a pdf) that… Continue

News

Reading up on news blog posts always leaves me upset lately.

Attacks against women, secularism, and nearly anyone with common sense abound everywhere. I know that ignorance is not bliss, but jeez, being constantly reminded that the world is full of such crazies sucks.

Kathy Griffin's Acceptance Speech to Be Cut from Emmy's Broadcast

Taco Bell Showdown!

Okay, maybe not a showdown, persay, but still awesome...

I went to Taco Bell today because I was hungry and wanted to try the new XXL Chalupa (for the record, it is fucking awesome).

Anyways, it was pretty busy. The store itself was pretty full (I was getting my food to go, though, so I wasn't looking for a seat). Luckily, there was only one guy in front of me. There was a 6-person family in front of him, but they had already started ordering when I got in line. 4 other… Continue
