When Secular Children Fly Solo At Church

This weekend was a personal test for my parenting. As an atheist parent, I am pretty adamant in presenting both sides of an argument and using context when discussing religious belief with my kids. The only confirmation of how fair of a job I am doing is when the kids end up in awkward…

Paradise Lost?

Let me begin by saying there are many blogs on this site that deal with the topics of religion and atheism in a serious and insightful manner...this is not one of those blogs.

When it comes to art, literature and music I have no problem with the idea of poetic license. Metaphors, symbolism and wild flights of fancy...no problem..in art. However, when someone claims that the story they are telling me is historic fact, then the literal and practical…

Slavery in the Bible

The right to own slaves runs deeply in our history, creates traditions that benefit some while harming others. The moral teaching of the bible supports slavery in both the old and new version. To pretend that christianity supported abolition of slavery is to deny history and delude oneself into thinking that the scriptures are a fit place upon which to build…

Prayer, Does god answer prayer?

Promises that Jesus makes about prayer in the Bible:

If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer. [Matthew 21:21]

If you ask anything in my name, I will do it. [John 14:14]

Ask, and it will be given you. [Matthew 7:7]

Nothing will be impossible to you. [Matthew…

Bible verses religious people don't mention or preach about + art for the verses

Have you all checked out "Awkward Moments Children's Bible" yet? It's an Amazon award-winning book and concept. No, I don't own shares of this book or are related to it's creators but I really, really LOVE the whole concept asnd I often share the illustrations on my Facebook page. I'd like to see the author put the art+verse on the backs of T-shirts (large design so easily read) as I'd proudly wear that in public to get people to think - I'd even purposedly stand in lines and position myself…

A New Snippet From "Christ's Rebellion"

The trip to Capernum had become disastrous. Looking over his shoulder beyond the massive crowd of would be students and desperately ill citizens who had traveled many miles to just touch Jesus’ robes, Judas saw a small detachment of town guards waiting for them. These…

The Book Of Life

I have been often troubled by the many mortal human attitudes and behaviors many different deities have taken on in various holy texts. Petty emotions like jealously, bigotry, hate, anger, and lust, to name a few. All of these…

Refresher Course In Work Place Prosyletizing

Over the course of the past two weeks, I have undergone training courses at my new employer's office. Typically, you get to meet everyone you will be working with, and I had a couple days of shadow training. Essentially, I was riding along side my trainer, watching how she…

If you can't do your job, due to your religion, should you have the job???

I was standing in the check-out line at the local Walmart (in Central City,Ky) when the line was stopped.  The cashier refused to check the lady ahead of me because she was buying beer.   Me, being me, asked what the problem was? The clerk said she couldn't scan the beer because "It"s against my religious convictions".  So the lady with the beer, and I, had to wait until a manager was called up to scan the beer onto the ticket.

I laughed about it.  It's so outlandish!  So, the…

Finding Purpose Without Religion

A fellow Bunch member of mine, Ben Kervin, recently said he was "surprised" that he was feeling a lack of purpose thanks to his deconversion to atheism a couple years ago:

It's great to be free from the superstitious thinking I once had, but sometimes wonder how god belief gave me an overall…

el or elohim?

As a humanist, it is often difficult to remain mute when Christian religionists start quoting the Bible to support everything from bad weather to alien sightings. Since the Bible is its own proof source those ignorant of its roots have no idea to its authenticity or lack thereof. One need not go very deep into the…

Wealth, treasure and thrift in the Bible

So, I listened to a little bit of Dave Ramsey today on talk radio because, well, conservative talk is about the only option in East Tennessee, and I usually prefer talk with which I disagree compared with bad pop and worse rock. If you don't know who Dave Ramsey is, he's…

Just when we thought Glenn Beck couldn't get crazier ...

Beck goes and makes a comparison between what appears to me to be an ill-cast Satan character in the History Channel series, "The Bible" and Barack Obama. Here's a side-by-side:

From Beck's perspective, this was just another opportunity — he doesn't really pass up any —…

A Biblical Defense of Slavery

A few days ago I completed a particularly distasteful task of reading a book that defended American slavery based on "biblical" evidence and opinion considered to be factual. Trying to read the interminable 590 page tract from a point of neutrality never was a consideration. I expected to read a long list of apologetics, justifications and excuses for the enslavement of other human beings and I was not disappointed.…

fiction or non-fiction

Ok, so it goes without saying that I think the Bible, the Koran, the Torah, and all other religious books should be considered fiction.  Now, how the hell do I convince others of this?

We were having a discussion at work (i am a teacher) about fiction and non-fiction.  A student asked a teacher if the bible was fiction or non-fiction.  The teacher said the student should ask his parent.  I thought that was a cheap ass answer, I mean the kid deserves a straightforward…

Some Reasons Why I Am An Atheist

First off, I'd like to say that if anyone could give me hard evidence of the existence of

a goD and this evidence could be tested by Scientists and proven to be true then I

would crawl through 100 miles of razor sharp glass just to kiss goDs feet. Simply

put, I am open minded to a certain point. The bIBLE can not be used as hard

evidence because it is a book of stories written 2000+ years ago, by humans that

were very ignorant of the reality around them. Plus, many of the…

Believers and Nonbelivers

I know I'm behind the times but, I just saw the Debate(?) between Matt Slick and

Matt Dillahunty. I have to admit that Matt is Slick. I don't know about other people but,

their debate, to me, was weird. Slick appeared to try, exceptionally hard, to win the

debate through confusion and get Dillahunty to admit something. See I'm confused.

But, true to form, Dillahunty slammed Slick at every point.  But Slick seemed unable

to absorb the Logical, Rational and Common Sense…
