Infowars/Alex Jones using Scare Tactics.. Hypocrites?

Please note this is an unedited first draft. it's really the only way i can get posts up. otherwise i start re-reading, re-writing, editing, and i never finish it and nothing gets put up. even if no one reads it, i need an online home for these ideas; i feel like they need to be shared, even in their roughest of stages. like my other blog posts, this will be edited, re-written, and…

Why Identify as an Atheist when I'm More than Just my Lack of Belief?

Atheists are a diverse bunch of people. There's no single set of beliefs or ideas that unite all atheists under a single banner. In fact, the only thing they have in common is that they don't believe in any deities.

This can make understanding the atheist community rather difficult for an outsider. Doesn't it make more sense to unite with people based on shared beliefs or identifying by what you are rather than what you are not? After all, it makes sense to start a…

#ribgate2013

Another day has passed and my wife and I have survived round 4 of the shitstorm. Phone calls, emails, and even carrier pigeons have descended upon the wife and I like a biblical plague. Reporters have lit up my phone like a "Vegas style slot machine" that never fucking pays the jackpot.

I'm still in shock. It has been one Hell of a ride.

Thanks to a phone call with Amanda at national headquarters, I was able to have a good chat with a comrade that lifted my secular spirit… Continue

A very personal victory.

As I write this, I am enjoying a nice ice cold cola. You might call it a victory cola. Let me tell you why.

This afternoon I got into a very heated argument with a member of the ODOH concerning my licensure. During this exchange I told him that " his program was unconstitutional because of its requirement for the teaching of"religious history" of tattooing".…

Secular Coalition for West Virginia

The following is the text of an email I just sent out. If you're interested in secular government - even if you don't live in West Virginia - you might be interested:

You may be aware that the Secular Coalition for America is working to set up a chapter in each state. Their stated purpose is to "bring together secular Americans in each state to influence government officials, legislation, and regulations." Having already succeeded in setting up chapters in several states, on…

Pissing in the wind...

I've been around the block.  Because I have an obsession with knowing things I have learned things I wish I didn't know.  Human ignorance and depravity are far deeper than the average person, whose head is stuck firmly in the sand, can even fathom.  For every "good thing" there are a thousand opposites.  I've learned things I cannot tell any other person for fear it would fuck up their head permanently, as mine has been.

I reject the notion of a creator because of the Hubble Deep…

Moving to God's Country - Cross Post

This is a cross-post from the Think Atheist site from around a week ago

Just moved to West Virginia. Among the standard frustrations of moving, I chose the occasion to read the local paper (thankfully online), and ran across this gem in the Letters to the Editor section: Jesus is the reason for a Christmas…

It's beginning to look a lot like atheistmas

Just posted this over at Think Atheist too:

Google Plus requirement for real names is a red herring.

Google Plus (Google+) stirred up a controversy by deleting, wholesale, accounts created under pseudonyms instead of under real names.  Google+ acknowledged their mistakes and is now formulating an official policy for naming conventions on their new social network.

There are legitimate reasons that users might need to use pseudonyms.  The most obvious and crucial one is anonymity for political dissidents and social activists. Without that anonymity, activism can be too dangerous to…

Deceptive anti-evolution education bill passes in Tennessee House, onto Senate!!!!

House Bill 368 passed on April 7, now watch out for Senate Bill 0893.  This bill is disguised as promoting critical thinking and scrutinizing scientific evidence, but in actuality is a classic creationist "Teach the Controversy" bill.  Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of this.

The bill, or at least I believe it to be the current version:http://www.capitol.tn.gov/Bills/107/Bill/SB0893.pdf

Making Atheism Stand for something more than just a lack of belief?

Yes, the classical definition simply means that you don't believe in a god.

Here's what I would like to see for the future, though:

-activism. A striving for equality and understanding.

I grew up surrounded by racism, class-ism, ableism, sexism, sizism, homophobia and a whole lot of other -ism's that are negative, and detrimental to society, by splitting it up into "us" and "them", and a lot of these are in religion, some are outside of it, but much of it, is…

Washington State

Perhaps I'm not looking in the right places. I just can't seem to find any local atheist groups that focus on doing charitable work or supporting equality in my community. Another poster pointed out that among the 200 organizations that recently supported Washington Families Standing Together, a group that campaigned to protect domestic partnerships in my state, there wasn't a single organization of non-believers on the… Continue
