It seems that every day there is another case of child abuse exposed within religious organizations. Religious leaders try to capitalize on the cases, as evidence of evil in the world and pass off the blame on the Devil. They even point to increasing secularism in Western society as the reason for so many cases. And, they are right. It is because… Continue

So I've been on a different forum and when the topic of religion comes up, guess which side I am on.
I've recently been having a civil if unconstructive discussion with someone about the topic of creationism.
This has seriously irritated one guy from Ireland, who has ... issues...both with the church and abuse...and doesn't take kindly to my pointing them out.
So just now I have just received this PM in my inbox.… Continue

The Roman Catholic Church has, the reader may well be aware, found itself in a bit of a bother. The Church has discovered, much to its chagrin, that covering up sexual assaults against children is not the done thing. More so when those clergy known to engage in such acts are shunted around from parish to parish, only to continue in such acts.
Rightfully, the Church has been much criticised for this approach of the past many decades. Finally forced to acknowledge the practice, rather… Continue

v 0.1 Atheism is the default setting at birth
It requires harsh and strict child abuse to turn children into non-atheists
v 0.6 after some thought I think is should change these statements into questions
Is atheism the default setting at birth?
Would a child growing up in
a free world in which reason and a humanistic world view are the
standard invent its own gods?
Does It require harsh and strict child abuse to turn children… Continue

From Not My God
Here in the Not My God penthouse, I focus on stories of atheists that are particularly difficult and moving for the purposes of illustration and because this obviously makes for a more interesting book. So if anyone out there thinks I cherry-pick the extremes, yes, I am, but that’s sort of the point.
I found this story on Dawkins’s Converts Corner.
“For many years I was a victim of… Continue

How does the idea of a “Catholic child” not make you sick? The child isn’t being given a choice whatsoever in their religion. Their parents have already made a decision for them before they can even make a good decision. Young children are very impressionable and you scare the shit out of them with fear of eternal damnation, that will stick with them. Indoctrinating children is easily equivalent to brainwashing. I think its truly a form of child abuse.
“Isn’t it enough to see that a… Continue

AN: I wrote an advertisement for the religious plea in the voice of a lawyer or something. My cynicism glad was about to burst, so I had to write this. Of course, it can also be read and commented upon at Good reason News.

This excerpt begins with me watching 30 children for 3 days while their parents attend my grandmother's faith healing lecture, held in the clubhouse of a south Florida trailer park. This all happened in the fall of my Freshman year of high school.
Alexander was two years old, blond, quiet and sweet. He was one of the kids still in diapers, but he was the only one in cloth ones. I thought they were gross, messy, and more work; I was worried about sticking him with one of the… Continue

Think tank concludes that Sharia courts should not be recognised in Britain
Sharia courts should not be recognised under Britain’s 1996 Arbitration Act, according to a new report from independent think-tank Civitas.
According to Denis MacEoin, author of Sharia Law or ‘One Law For All’?, sharia courts operating in Britain may be handing down rulings that are inappropriate to this country because they are linked to elements in Islamic law that are seriously out of… Continue

To the best of my knowledge, Helen Ukpabio and Nigeria's Liberty Gospel Church haven't been posted about here before (hint: it's considerate to do a search for existing discussions before generating a whole new one. Both 'Hitler' and 'abortion' have shelf lives
). Child witches in Africa have been discussed
, but Liberty Gospel takes the horror and idiocy to a whole new level. I am pretty speechless.… Continue

The following is an excerpt from my upcoming autobiography "Exodus from Zion".
I don’t know that he ever wanted to be with me. He certainly didn’t want me to leave, but my misery meant nothing to him, and on some level I think he must have enjoyed causing me pain. Our whole relationship sucked. It was an exercise in masochism and I finally learned what it was like to have someone treat me as worthless as I felt I was.
I married him because I was pregnant, but I left… Continue

One of my friends was raped by her brother this morning. I feel pretty damn useless. I mean, right after it happened when she texted me, there was stuff I could do. Like call 911 and get them out there, contact her boyfriend, advise her not to shower or bathe till she'd had the rape kit. But there's really NOTHING I can say that will make this situation suck any less.
I remember why I wished prayer was true now. Because I wanted to have something to offer when someone was in pain I… Continue

The following is an excerpt from my upcoming book "Exodus from Zion".
Warning: This post contains graphic descriptions of abuse.
Outside our summer programs of VBS and choir, most of the time my siblings and I played with the other kids on our block. Ryan and Justin were my brother’s age. Unfortunately, Ryan was usually grounded due to his grades, and Justin was a bully. I remember once when Justin punched me in the side of my head and my brother beat him up… Continue

A guy I know from class approached me today on break. "Can I have your number to give my girlfriend? She needs someone to talk to." This guy had heard my story, which I've just started being open about in the past year. (This is a counseling/therapy group class.)
She called today and we talked for about an hour. I can see why he asked me in particular. So many things in her story were in mine. Molestation, physical violence from parents, biblical/spiritual abuse, abusive men, drug… Continue
