Homosexuals: What Do You Really Know? (Part 12-13 in 14 Part Series)

Part 12

And Then, There's the Bible

Homosexuality has been condemned by religious leaders for centuries. For many, homophobia is a prejudice largely created and sustained by the scriptures of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Citing the Bible as the ultimate proof-source, many may find that it is not as clear as one might think on the subject.

Essentially, there are seven biblical passages cited by Christians to…

Demythologizing Science and Religion (cont'd)

Several people have questioned the dominance of mechanistic thought in the sciences, and I must admit that my understanding of the scientific community comes from reading historical accounts and from conversations with scientific colleagues who began their careers half a century or more ago now -- and from reading works by scientists whose belief systems also go back a number of decades.

The gist of the conversations I recall was that people without an acknowledged commitment…

The Poor Farm

Does anyone here remember the "Poor Farm"? It was a place where old people, too old to work their farms and with no one able to care for them, were sent to the Poor Farm. My grandparents took me there when I was a very small child when they visited family members, took them food, and clothing and treats. I can't remember any of the faces except my grandparents'. I remember grandma crying, and granddad trying to comfort her. Neither one drove and depended on others to take them to The Poor…

Noah—An Accident No Longer Looking for a Place to Happen

Darren Aronofsky is an atheist. AND? With unsurpassed cinematography and stunning hits like "Black

Swan" and "Pi" to his credit, he is also an excellent teller of stories. Unfortunately, "Noah" isn't one of them.

"Noah" starts on a low note and shrinks until it finally slides off the scale,…

New Book

I haven´t been on for several years but I can´t find the directory that used to show where everyone was from.  I live in Mexico City and have some interesting stories from when we went to the fellowhip in Denver to keep them from the wicked wolf mother in law who was a Christian Scientist.

I spent the last three years researching a book about Religion (obviously I´m against it) and how the religious right played free and easy with the bible and its mythological source  to verify its…

Black Hearts, Mean Spirits

The states are not free, under the guise of protecting maternal health or potential life, to intimidate women into continuing pregnancies.—Justice Harry A. Blackmun, Roe v. Wade, January 22, 1973

Recently the Texas State Legislature walked all over Justice Blackmun’s ground breaking insight…

How do you feel about today's state of the government and the politics that run it?

I feel disgusted. You probably do too.

I watched this week's episode of Bill Moyers and Company with their guest, Marty Kaplan (found here: http://billmoyers.com/episode/full-show-big-money-big-media-big-trouble/).

In it, Marty Kaplan said; "People say they know it's a con, just as they say that they are not being swayed by the ads for products that they see on television. If…

Millions Leaving the Church, While Legislators Waste Time and Money

In the past decade more than 100 million people have left the Christian Church, but that has not stopped conservative religionist from trying to force their point of view into public schools. Since Texas passed its “prayer bill” in 2006, numerous “Bible Belt”…

An unintended effect

When I was in my 20s, I was driving to Colorado for a summer job. I had been across the USA before, camping with family, but this time I was on my own. I was just stopping for the night, and selected a roadside motel so I could get back on the road early the next morning. In perusing my rather plain room, I found, not a Gideon bible in the drawer of the bedside table, but a book entitled,

" the book of Morman". Curious, I flipped it open for a quick read. After just the first couple… Continue

A Majority of Christians Know Little About Their Religion

My alternate title for this piece was "You Don't Know Jack," but it would be such a reach, so, I said it plainly. Occasionally, a Christian or two chooses to debate me about the Bible and of course I leave them asking themselves why they chose me to debate. It is not that I am a great debater, rather, it is that they know so little about the Bible. As long as we speak of the Bible itself as far as content, they manage to hang in until the discrepancies, autocratic behaviors, sexism…

Help Get 'This Non-Religious Life' to Texas for 'The Response'

Our Story

‘This Non-Religious Life’ was born out of a chance interview on Zombie Popcorn’s other show, ‘The Talking Dead’ which was meant to cover the May 21, 2011 rapture prophecy. At the last minute, Brother Mike of May-212011.com threw his hat into the ring. Bob, interested in being in on the conversation from the start, jumped at the opportunity to be in on the discussion.

After the two-hour live show was over, we decided that the material was too good to allow it to… Continue

Star Wars Is Overrated

Edit: I didn't name this? I are dumb.

Now before you jump down my throat I'm not saying it's bad, the original trilogy is good for the most part but it is not the gold that people seem to view it as. There are many good parts but there are bad parts as well.

I know someone will say in response to some of my criticisms: "in the novelisation ..." I don't care. I doesn't matter what the novelisation says, the movies are what matter, not the novelisations of the movies. Another…

How to Get out?

I tried to get out of the church of England/Anglican Church.  I was told it was a gift and there was no get-out.  Some gift.

Now, I am very serious about leaving this organization so absurd.  Anyone have any ideas?  Anyone ever come up against this foolishness?

I have been a practising atheist all my talking life.  My Mum and Dad just got me baptized like all the other kids had been.  It was not their fault, they wanted no trouble with the…

The Discovery Institute and Human Exceptionalism

First Things, "published by The Institute on Religion and Public Life, an interreligious, nonpartisan research and education institute whose purpose is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society," has come out squarely against bestiality and science fiction books that deal with such issues. Given that…
