Mean Spirits in Texas

With the exception of Alaska, Texas is the largest state in the Union and has a population of over 25 million. Texas also has the highest number of uninsured residents in the entire United States with over a fourth, or 6 million, of its residents lacking healthcare insurance.

Houston has the dubious distinction…

Something is Rotten -- Very Rotten -- in the State of Texas

I've always maintained that so-called pro-life advocates for the unborn have little science to back up their cockamamie theories concerning abortion and rely, in most cases, on religious intolerance, bigotry, and slavish devotion to dogma. All three of the solar phallic monotheisms, the Abrahamaic faiths, preach male dominance and female submission, paternalistic hegemony that by now should be consigned to the dust heap of history. Allowing a woman to have total control over her bodily…

Help Get 'This Non-Religious Life' to Texas for 'The Response'

Our Story

‘This Non-Religious Life’ was born out of a chance interview on Zombie Popcorn’s other show, ‘The Talking Dead’ which was meant to cover the May 21, 2011 rapture prophecy. At the last minute, Brother Mike of May-212011.com threw his hat into the ring. Bob, interested in being in on the conversation from the start, jumped at the opportunity to be in on the discussion.

After the two-hour live show was over, we decided that the material was too good to allow it to… Continue

Things to be thankful for.

One cool thing that made this a really cool year was my trip to the Texas Freethought convention in Dallas. Just a short five hour drive for us in Oklahoma. Good food and great entertainment.

I encourage all freethinkers to try and attend a meeting that is close to them. It does not matter if the its a…

Chapter Eight; SUNDAY GO TO MEETING part twenty-eight

On any given Sunday morning driving around in America presents a strange occurrence. It is the furthest divergence of the two groups

ideologically wish to have to do with each other. The faithful adherents

make their way through various traditions of attendance to their place

of worship. They are the ones that populate the early morning traffic on

Sunday mornings. The…

Let’s REGRESS…not PROGRESS!

I live in Texas.

I’ve always been an atheist.

All my life I’ve had to put up with these bible pounding clowns who think their “Manure” does not stink.

Well it does.

I’ve seen these clown just ruin a college.

At first there were no preachers on the Board of Regents.

Then one day there was one.

Then two.

The next thing you knew all the Regents were preachers.

That lead to the demise of the college.

It lost it’s… Continue

As if the Texas BOE's decision couldn't get worse...

...I happened upon this little snippet from an AOL News article. Here's the excerpt that really boils my blood:

"...the original curriculum asked students to 'explain the impact of Enlightenment ideas from John Locke, Thomas Hobbes, Voltaire, Charles de

Montesquieu, Jean Jacques Rousseau and Thomas Jefferson on political

revolutions from 1750 to the… Continue

Texas Board of Education

As I'm sure was the case with many of you, I was up in arms when I found out about this:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/03/12/texas-education-board-app_n_497440.html

Seriously? How do you remove Thomas Jefferson from history? How can anyone justify misrepresenting history in order to push their own agenda?

Thankfully, a friend sent me this NPR interview which helped put… Continue

Calling all Texas Aggie Atheists, past & present.

I am working on starting up an A|N group for Texas A&M Former students who are also atheists. There are a lot of Aggies out there, of course, but how many of us are nonbelievers? I'd like to know and meet you. I'm TAMU Class of 1993 and was a member of outfit Trident P-2.

We hear all about the famous "Aggie Network", but does it really work for you if you're an atheist, or a Libertarian instead of a Republican, or worse, you're a goddless lefty liberal like yours… Continue

Back in Houston

I resigned my Library job with TWU in mid-December after my boss and I reached an impasse over what constituted reasonable work expectations for a Librarian I, Cataloger. She absolutely slammed me in my annual performance review with no advanced warning or counseling or anything. She then set up basically impossible conditions, and it was very clear that she was trying to run me off and was setting traps to get me fired. I tried to talk things out with her but failed every time, because her… Continue

Good Meetup, new record for us.

Really enjoyed our local Meetup.com Atheist meetup downtown tonight. We started out at our usual hangout, Banter, but because of an unexpected musical performance, we relocated across the street to Hydrant Cafe, where we could actually converse and not strain our throats and ears.

We did actually experience our first heckler, of a sort, back at Banter; one middle-aged woman felt the need to tell us that "God saved my bacon I don't know how many times."; It took me a second to realize… Continue

Religious “activists” who use disasters to promote themselves or their beliefs

So down here in Texas we’ve had our first case of a death from Swine Flu.

Now, when you have something like this or similar, you’ll always have that individual who is a bible pounder take the opportunity to say that this is “God will.”

The bible pounder will then go on to state that this is “God making us pay for our sins..” You know, the “Gays” for their lifestyle, those “adulterous” individuals, “free sex”, no social morals and what else is on the list for that day.

What… Continue
