Addendum - How as an atheist I cope with tragedy.

Previous Post:

Raquel Plascencia Fonseca: January 7th, 1946 - June 30th, 2009

My mom finally got to rest last Wensday, June 30. She had a respiratory arrest around 7:00PM after being in a coma for nearly 3 months.

In my previous post I talked about my experience during her convalescence. We are all sad about her passing on. I am sad, I miss her a lot, but I am… Continue

The relationship between religions and viruses (natural and computers)

It was about 10 years ago I heard about computer viruses and their similarities to human viruses or natural viruses . That comparison was very interesting for me and even this comparison ignited an idea in my mind: if we call natural viruses live or semi live beings then we can call computer viruses alive or semi alive too.

Here Ramadan has begun a few days ago and my parents like many other Muslims fast in this month and they practice rituals more than other months. Once I was looking at… Continue

Myself vs myself vs fiction...

I have been struggling of late, to understand religion and belief, asking myself the question...

Why do people feel the need to believe in fictions?

This past weekend my mom said something very telling to me that I think struck at the heart of my personal dilemma for the past few months.

"We (my family) did not need Religion, the way others families did."

To put some context around myself and this post (I warn you its a bit of a ramble, if you want… Continue

The thoughts of a fed-up atheist.

The thoughts of a fed-up atheist:

I'm an atheist. So fuckin' what? Big fuckin' deal. As an atheist, I'm pretty pissed off with the world of today. I try to remain quite liberal but I end up finding that the term 'liberal conservative' does have some application. I'm a deep believer in secularism and, luckily, I find myself living in quite a secular country. I'm a deep believer in science, but I'm not a humanist. I'm not a Buddhist. Nor am I a Muslim, a Sikh or a Christian. I… Continue

A short conversation between an atheist and a Christian (#2).

Mr Atheist: Mr Christian, how are you?

Mr Christian: Well, if you must know I feel slightly befuddled. Your last barrage took me aback somewhat.

Mr Atheist: Good.

Mr Christian: [Silence.]

Mr Atheist: I'll tell you what, Mr Christian. To save you the bother of talking (and this writer - whomever he is - from writing 'Mr Christian' over and over again) why don't I do most of the talking?

Mr Christian: [Makes gurgling sounds - he may have gone to be with Jesus.]

Mr… Continue

A short conversation between an atheist and a Christian.

Mr Atheist: Why, hello there, Mr Christian.

Mr Christian: Oh, hello. Sure is a nice day, huh? Thank the Lord!

Mr Atheist: Right.... Anyway, I have something to ask you.

Mr Christian: Really! Oh, how exciting. Please, proceed.

Mr Atheist: Yeah. Sure. Anyway, what's so special about being a Christian?

Mr Christian: I'm not sure what you mean, dear fellow.

Mr Atheist: What I mean is this: hypothetically, if you were born in Pakistan you'd be a Muslim worshipping… Continue

The root of all evil.

After perusing many internet pages concerning the evils of religion, I've come away feeling slightly nonplussed. I've seen individuals argue that fear is the cause; or money, or hatred. Money, obviously, is the modern manifestation of a centuries-old system of trade and barter. Whilst money has no intrinsic worth, we use it in exchange for goods and services. Money does not motivate people; the obtaining of material things does.

I agree that hatred is the manifestation of true human… Continue

It's time to mess with Texas

I've also posted this at the ever-growing Good Reason News, please visit, if you feel like it.

A Wall Street Journal article says there's a big push to bring Christianity into the public classroom.

The Texas Board of Education, which recently approved new science standards that made room for…

Lincoln Nebraska

Jason Frye is putting on a regional Freethinker conference in Lincoln, NE Aug. 14-15. I will be speaking on my book and some of our Recovering From Religion (RR) facilitators will be presenting on RR. This is an exciting opportunity to challenge folks in the Nebraska-Iowa area to come out and let the fundamentalists know that we are here to stay. I hope you will help us get the word out. I'll post more information as soon as I have it.

How good to hear a news bulletin this morning that talked of two people who made their exit from this world via the Dignitas clinic in Switzerland, without wheeling on a man in a frock to say how evil it all was!

That’s not to say men in frocks won’t be wheeled on in other bulletins, but all I heard was the way the 8 a.m. Radio 4 Today programme’s main bulletin treated it. I was waiting for the, “But a spokesman for the Catholic Church in England and Wales, the Right Reverend… Continue

Seeing things

The Freethinker tells us of “thousands of Irish Catholic eedjits [who] have flocked to a County Limerick church to pray at the stump of a recently cut willow tree”.

And why? Well, it “allegedly bears a resemblance to She Who Was Once Knocked Up by the Almighty”, that’s why.

So it’s a case of here we go again. Ever looked at a cloud and seen a shape you… Continue

Does it matter that Bible knowledge is on the decline in Britain?

Bible knowledge is on the decline in Britain. Fewer than one in twenty are able to name all of the Ten Commandments, and a number of youngsters thought the Bible “old-fashioned”.

Well, it is, I suppose. It’s been around for quite a while now.

A survey, according to the Reuters story linked to above, says that 40 per cent “did not know that the tradition of exchanging Christmas presents… Continue

Curbing homophobic bullying? Let's start with religions!

The UK’s Schools Secretary, Ed Balls, is to crack down on homophobic bullying among pupils.

Perhaps he ought to begin with the General Teaching Council for England, which last week watered down its code of conduct to appease “faith” groups.

A section of the code designed to tackle discrimination was changed… Continue

Chariots of Iron

My interview on Chariots of Iron Podcast came out today. I talk about The God Virus and Recovering from Religion. Eli, Mark and Lamar really did their homework and had great questions. I think we explored the Civil Religion idea better in this forum than in any others I have done. Having three guys interview is a trip. It was more like we were all sitting around the table with a beer and having some good laughs. The interview portion is in the last half of the podcast.

Here is the… Continue

God's Last Will and Testament

Judeo-Christians use the phrase “God's Will”. They'll use it to explain why bad things happen to good people. They use it to explain weird and illogical rules in the Bible.

Christians will say God's will is clear. “It clearly states in the Bible, fag's shouldn't marry”. To get the full effect of the last quote read it again this time with a judgmental know-everything southern accent. “It clearly states in the Bible, fag's shouldn't marry”. Now you should look at your cousin… Continue

Catholics Living in God's Light.

More reasons to get rid of religion

It has always been asserted that illicit sex has been going on among the religious body of the Catholic Church. Besides the known priest sexual abuse of young boys, charges of Nuns having sex with priest, priest having sex with priest and Nuns having sex with Nuns have always been put forth. Are these charges real or just allegations? Well, a former Nun tells her story, “which details illicit relationships, sexual harassment and bullying… Continue

"Faith Healing," a Suicidal Path:

Think about it, Christians or most Christians I should say, staunchly support the protection of a fetus, arguing that it is a child just not yet born. Like wise, their stands against arbitration are planted firmly in the individual right to life. On the other hand, their protection of children after birth seems to disappear. For example, the case of innocent 11-year-old Kara Neumann of Weston, who after the parents, both followers of the Unleavened Bread Ministries, refuse to give their… Continue

Woman suspected of witchcraft burned alive

Reasons to eliminate religion.

Sorry, but I have to vent for a minute, OK; for hundreds of years indigenous people and their culture have seen extreme brutality from Muslim and Allah, Jews/Christians and God/Jesus. In fact, for those of us who have read-up on history knows that the justifications for enslaving and brutalizing these people was that "they were not Christians or "saved" and we, the good God/Jesus loving colonialists, must convert these pagans to… Continue
