Update about the school project

Hello my friends on Atheist Nexus, am updating you on the progress of the school project.

Normal lessons are being conducted and towards the middle of May, we received a volunteer at the school to orientate both our teachers and the students on computer skills. The program is already in progress and our students are so excited and fully committed towards attaining these skills.

The Godless Poutine based in Canada is running a one o one interview of both the School Director, The…

National Day of Reason, May 3 2012

I'll be attending the NDOR events in Raleigh, NC with some of my friends from our local Coalition of Reason group in the Piedmont Triad, NC. Greta Christina, Dan Barker, Todd Stiefel and more will be there.

For any reading this who feel that they are the "only non-believer I know", they should check to see what events will be taking place in their home towns, or…

SOCIETAL SHARED ERRORS

"Religion is comparable to a childhood neurosis. The whole thing is so patently infantile, so foreign to reality, that to anyone with a friendly attitude to humanity it is painful to think that the great majority of mortals will never be able to rise above this view of life."  – Sigmund Freud

Professing dogmatic faith in popular superstitions and ancient myths handed down by our primal…

Not preaching to the choir

So, here we are in our nexus, discussing things that interest us and I wanted to post something about the need to not preach to the choir.  We all know that we don't believe, but how do we reach the folks who also don't believe but don't care enough about the fact they don't believe to get involved?  Does it even matter?

Of course, we all think it matters, otherwise we wouldn't be actively involved in groups that express and promote our non-belief.  We are almost all passionate…

Rant: Whats the Meaning and Purpose of Meaning and Purpose?

Many theists say that with out god life has no meaning and purpose, we atheists say that with out an afterlife life has more meaning and we make out own purpose, they reply with "but its not objective", we point out that objective meaning and purpose are impossible. Well here is a new question: Whats the meaning and purpose of meaning and purpose? Do happy people give a shit… Continue

Corliss Lamont's Definition of Humanism

August 24, 1997. Corliss Lamont's definition of Humanism.

Recently I sent in my dues to join the American Humanist Association. They sent me a "welcome packet" including the Humanist Manifestos I and II, and a book, THE PHILOSOPY OF HUMANISM, by Corliss Lamont. First published in 1949, considered a classic. There is a lot in that book, but I thought I would…

The Benefits of Ballrooms - Why Attend a Humanist Conference?

I type this entry as I sit on the runway at Boston-Logan Airport, about to take to the sky for a 6 hour journey to San Jose. I will be traversing a distance of almost

2700 miles. If I were to go 600 miles farther, and in a different direction, I

could be in London, my hometown – this is a…

Why Religion and God are Unnecessary in the Modern World

I was originally going to publish this at Associated Content but they don't give up front payments for opinion articles so I published it there under a non-exclusive license and will publish it else where including my blog.

Introduction

Beliefs in gods is as old as civilization as is religion. But is the belief in god(s) and religion necessary? Does it benefit society or does it harm society? It is my belief that a belief in god(s)… Continue

Aweism

I ran across this essay in the April/May 2009 issue of Free Inquiry and it impressed the hell out of me. After showing it to some friends, 80% of them now say "I think I'm an Aweist." The other two were impressed as well but didn't make a commitment. After a lifetime of uncertainty about what to call my brand of nonbelief, I now consider myself an Aweist. I'd love to hear what the A/N community thinks of this new nomenclature.

So here, reprinted with the kind permission of the… Continue
