A Good Watch.

While I am a big fan of Court T.V. (Judge Judy is my favorite! Followed by Peoples Court). I occasionally get a yen for something more substantial. To the magical land of Youtube and I found this great 2 hour debate with Stephen Fry, Christopher Hitchens, and a Catholic Priest and a woman involved with the Catholic Church. It was polite, smart, with some smatterings of humor and of course there was the Q&A session at the end.

It's two hours long, but it's a great watch.…

On Death and Christopher Hitchens

“If religious instruction were not allowed until the child had attained the age of reason, we would be living in a quite different world.”

Christopher Hitchens, God Is Not Great

“There is nothing that is too obvious of an absurdity to be firmly planted in the human head as long as you begin to instill before the age of five by constantly repeating it with an air of great seriousness.”

Arthur Schopenhauer

“Hardest of deaths…

Hitchens Takes on Fox News on Jerry Falwell

I've transcribed this segment from Fox News after the death of Jerry Falwell for your reading enjoyment. It has become a Hitchens youtube classic, with over a million views. It is obvious why this is the case: Hitchens is at his best here, and his concluding jab at Falwell is perhaps the greatest thing that has ever been said on the mainstream media. Without further ado:

Dramatis Personae:

Alan Colmes, former host of Fox News show Hannity & Colmes.

Sean Hannity, former…

Hitchens death will be used by adhernts to convert more followers.

Let me begin by saying these fools speak as if they have some sort of special knowledge. The only thing they possess is being alive after Christopher Hitchens died. I find their bold faced arrogance immoral and distasteful.

These quotes are from The Christian Post. …

Perspectives on Living Life

Like many atheists, my thoughts this morning are directed towards Christopher Hitchens. His passing has made for a somber start to the day for many. I can't quite find a word to express my emotions. I can't say that I am sad because I am overjoyed to see how many people were touched by one man and his ideas. The sentimentality is touching and inspiring. I am reminded of how amazing it is for someone to come into the world relatively alone and unknown, grow and develop an individual…

Opening Rant

First, a rave:  I am most grateful for Atheist Nexus.  Since effectively rebirthing myself as an atheist (decades ago, I was an agnostic), I've had no place to voice opinions, reactions or thoughts, where others might share them and perhaps further stretch my brain with their reflections.  Thank you, A/N.

Now, a rant:  There is little if anything more sacred to me, in all the history and legacy of the United States of America, than the Constitution and its Bill of Rights.  The most…

The Science of Good and Evil (London, April 11th, 2011)

I am going down to London to go see Sam Harris in an Intelligence Squared debate the "reverand" Dr Giles Fraser, Canon Chancellor of St Paul's Cathedral on the topic of where do our ideas about morality and meaning come from?

The last time I went to one of these it was the now legendary Christopher Hitchens and Stephen Fry Vs Anne Widdecombe and Archbishop John…

Chapter Eleven; MORALITY AND MANKIND part forty-one

While it it's not as big issue using some of the moral teachings of the

Bible to guide your life, it is nothing but a delusion to believe the

stories of the Old and New Testament are based upon reality and science.

I may not be able to convince the devout followers to abandon their

faith in the fairy stories of the ancients and become and atheist as I

am but I may be able to convince some moderate followers to see the

wonders of nature and live their life for what… Continue

God In Chaos; Chapter Nine; THE INTELEGENT DESIGN VIEW OF EVOLUTION part thirty-eight

When addressing some of the issues of the fundamentalist view of evolution

it is important to identify some key words that they use to try to

vilify reasonable scientists and educated people that understand the

concepts of evolution and natural selection. From the way the word

is used by the intelligent design side it seems that the word

“Darwinism” is meant to describe the “believers” in the

Theory of Evolution to make it seem more like a radical belief… Continue

Of a Salamander in Eden: The Obfuscatory Illogicalities of Doctor David Berlinski

One of the very few joys of chemotherapy, I’ve learned, is the opportunity it offers for catching up on one’s long-overdue reading. I usually take to the cancer ward as I call the infusion room at my clinic, a couple of “readers’” magazines, and until the antihistamine kicks in (added to the saline solution to ward off such complications of Treanda as flush and flashes of heat in the head, even difficulty…

When Religion's Apologists Attack!

As religion and its sycophants continue to crumble under the weight of science and reason, its exponents have dialed up the polemics and the deceit.

Jacqueline Maley's editorial, "Atheism's true believers gather"[1], published in The Sydney Morning Herald is one of the most disingenuous, inaccurate portrayals of atheists—replete with some of the most outlandish faulty logic… Continue

Hitchens, Down and Out in Beirut

I don't know if this is true or not, but it is reported here that:

"Christopher Hitchens is currently in Beirut sponsored by the same group that owns that crap NOW Lebanon. He got in a few nights ago and surprisingly went out drinking. On his way out of the bar he saw an SSNP poster and wrote on it "Fuck the SSNP". There just happened to be some SSNP thugs near by--most likely asking people for their ID,… Continue
