Of a Salamander in Eden: The Obfuscatory Illogicalities of Doctor David Berlinski

One of the very few joys of chemotherapy, I’ve learned, is the opportunity it offers for catching up on one’s long-overdue reading. I usually take to the cancer ward as I call the infusion room at my clinic, a couple of “readers’” magazines, and until the antihistamine kicks in (added to the saline solution to ward off such complications of Treanda as flush and flashes of heat in the head, even difficulty…

Do I deserve the opprobrium? (A blog about insulting the dead)

Was in a discussion about what is spirituality and it's relationship to the supernatural on a thread on a website that includes a fair few Christians and religious sorts and one person related in a public forum this story to the OP:

I cared for a young dying AIDS patient years ago. X. When he died I threw a rose into the ocean back home in Ireland to remember his passing. I said, "IF you are 'up there' - you get your… Continue

Death

Death to an Atheist

In most mythologies or belief structures the main goal of its design is to assure the believer that they may physically die but that is not the end of them. There is a concept of a soul, a living soul that will never cease to be. All these beliefs systems take away fear of death and replace it with a feeling of anticipation and acceptance.

Many believers of such creative fancies believe that life, physical life, is a lesser existence, and that worldly… Continue

Can Atheists Believe In An Afterlife?

First, lets forget I asked that question because even if someone says I can't - I DON'T CARE BECAUSE I DO. But seriously, is there anybody else out there who doesn't believe in Gods but thinks there could be a different plane of existance.

I've seen a few Ghosts, mostly Family members or fallen pets and other just random people who clung to this world after death I suppose. I've never felt scared or threatend by any of them, well... one time I thought my room shaking a bit odd… Continue

Addendum - How as an atheist I cope with tragedy.

My mom finally got to rest last Wensday, June 30. She had a respiratory arrest around 7:00PM after being in a coma for nearly 3 months.

In my previous post I talked about my experience during her convalescence. We are all sad about her passing on. I am sad, I miss her a lot, but I am… Continue

Should Religion Be Allowed Before Age Of Consent?

When our 3-year-old daughter was mauled by a neighborhood dog, we were distraught, as any parent would be. But, as Jehovah's Witnesses, we faced an even greater fear, beyond the trauma and scars introduced by the dog bites: What if she needed a blood transfusion? Our religious convictions mandated that we refuse. Her very life could be in danger, not from the attack, but from our beliefs.

My mother, an insanely devout woman if ever there was one, immediately called the congregation… Continue

A dailogue... Now with 100% more Rage Issues!! And +3 lol

[as a member of FUCK CENSORSHIP i must admit my misgivings and overall animosity to changing the subjects name into a silly- albeit apt -pseudonym, but anyone who Really wants to know and help can just be a pain in the ass and ask me- and anyone who has any complaints against it should yell at Rosemary! I'm yelling at her right now in fact!!]

This was a messenger conversation i was having with a friend of mine today. It's choppy because of that, and the emoticons don't carry over,… Continue

Is he even alive? Have i failed him?

It has been 2 day since i last heard from [Happy Bunny {don't ask me, ask Adult Swim ok? I didn't even want to post him as a Pseudonym, but here we are!}]. By the time i realized he wasn't sending me anything back- texts (his phone cannot be called any longer), emails, IM's, everything i could think of- i was past the point where i could help him. I can only hope desperately that he either checked himself into a mental hospice or is in a hospital somewhere, recovering. I hate the idea of facing… Continue

Wringing Out The Dread

An acquaintance of mine recently brought her 12-year old daughter to see me and talk about the passing of the little girl's grandfather. The mother was unsure of what to say about death and the afterlife and wanted me to give her my perspective, which I thought odd due to my atheism. Nevertheless, I told her how I view death and my thoughts on what comes next. Hopefully, it gave her some comfort. Pre-teens are hard to read sometimes and don't always respond to people they don't know… Continue

Wisconsin Child Dies While Parents Pray

Dale and Leilani Neumann of Wausau Wisconsin have been charged with 2nd degree reckless homicide for letting their 11 year old daughter die of diabetes while they prayed for her recovery rather than seeking medical care.

Their family’s attorney is fighting the case saying that the courts, if the charges are allowed to continue, will “become entangled in constitutionally protected religious matters.” because the charges “…unconstitutionally infringe on their right to freely… Continue
