Another try at the skeptics' meetup

Some time back, I was an enthusiastic member of the local skeptics' meetup.  It was a chaotic, free form get together where people talked about, just about anything.  People got to know each other, discussed their experiences, and I felt a sense of community.

About a year ago, the meetup changed.  There was movement toward a more…

Emergent Properties of the Human Brain

This post revisits arguments related to free will and complexity theory. I've recently been focused on newer arguments for self-determinism (a compatibilist explanation of free will) but an interview of Daniel Dennett, by CFI, has prompted me to revisit "emergent properties". If you're not familiar with my explanation for self-determinism, please consult my web page at AtheistExile.com for several posts on the topic.

The basic premise of hard…

Florida

Enjoyed a very busy and fun four days in Florida speaking at the University of Miami as well as to FLASH and CFI groups.  I also conducted a leadership workshop in Ft. Lauderdale that had six groups represented.  I think South Florida has some major momentum going right now. Look for them to kick some butt over the next year.

CFI London

Had an awesome time speaking to CFI London Saturday. Totally tired from jet lag but still managed to down two pints of Guinness after and talk

for a couple hours in the pub with Stephen Law, Richard Green and many

of the CFI and Atheist UK people. Didn't get an official count but about 70 people for a noon talk on Saturday. Very lively Q&A afterwards.…

Looks like I will be speaking in London, once and maybe twice. Just confirmed a presentation to London CFI on Oct. 23.

Controversy

The differences in audiences was very apparent in my presentation in Portland. It was clear from the start that there were a significant number of religious people in the audience as well as a large number of non-religious people. The college students seemed more upset about the characterization of religion as a virus and did not like the humor as much as the CFI attendees. This is the same talk I always give, I made no changes or exceptions for this group, the the write up was quite different… Continue

Portland event

Had a hugely successful event at Reed college tonight. Leslie of the Reed Student Secular Humanists and Kurt of CFI Portland did an incredible job of publicizing the event and 160 people showed up. I was surprised at the number of recovering Catholics and Jews in the audience - or at least the number who spoke about it or mentioned it. It looks like we will get an RR group going in Portand soon. 7 people stayed after the talk to discuss how to get a group started.

Interviews

I did a couple of interviews for the NY Atheist cable network Friday. Seemed to go well, we will see. Today I do a debate for the NY Philosophy club and CFI.
