Say there’s a young child, 4 or 5, who believes in Santa Claus. Her parents cultivate the belief, provide the props and stories, and the kid’s friends support the myth. Then the parents drop the bomb – there’s no Santa! The magical reindeer, Rudolph, the elves, all of it, it’s all a made-up story! The kid might be crushed, but their honest revelation is a vital step toward the child’s separation from her parents and their authority. It’s a step that moves her toward the dismissal of childhood… Continue

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- An unusual sight greeted Jerusalem police as they entered one of Christianity's holiest sites Sunday morning: dozens of monks punching and kicking each other in a massive brawl.

Without Walls International Church is fighting foreclosure threat.
Last week, the St. Petersburg Times reported that the California-based Evangelical Christian Credit Union filed foreclosure proceedings against Without Walls, which owes $13-million for its Tampa property and $12.5-million on its Lakeland branch.
According to the church's pastor, Rev. Randy White, "We are a great church, and the devil has tried to take us… Continue

I am sure you know or have met somebody who thinks like this. You may, in fact, be one of these people I'm about to describe. If you are, I strongly urge you to consider what I'm about to say.
You're an atheist, but you feel that too many hard-nosed vitriolic cynics have given the label a bad name so now you refuse to refer to yourself as what you truly are. And yet. Yet, you could always make an effort to proudly assert that yes, you are an atheist but that you're willing to discuss… Continue

On my way to work today in Chicago I took a detour and stopped off at a local church. I sat there for a while and closed my eyes for a few minutes. I happened to be next to the confessional boxes and some fake flickering candles. The building itself was really impressive, lots of marble, and it was extremely peaceful. I thought to myself, these religious folks actually do have something, you know. If you take away all the words and beliefs and repeated gestures and intolerance for other faiths,… Continue

I don't think I'm going to use this site much any more. I joined to see exactly how an atheist social network would work out, and whether it would be an interesting, new, and worthwhile experience.
I've decided that just being atheist isn't enough of a quality to bring together all these very different people. It's only one thing, and I don't feel like it's very substantial. Maybe if being atheist is a more important, defining part of your identity then it can work out. In my case, it's… Continue

NASA yesterday announced
the first image ever taken of an exoplanet in visible light. Photographed using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), the newly-discovered world orbits the star Formalhaut, a young hot star about 25 light years away. The star and planet are only about 250 million years old. Named Formalhaut-b (by astronomical convention the star itself is referred to as Formalhaut-a), the new planet orbits… Continue

In a small village in Nigeria, a little boy of 5 years of age is frightened and confused. His mother and father have abandoned him; their normally loving embrace will never be felt again. The other villagers are angry, and some of them throw stones at him. He does not cry. Part of him has accepted her fate, and the dejection of his loved ones is enough to make the boy numb. The only question in his mind is how… Continue

I am excited to announce that we are hours away from hitting the 1800 mark for respondents to the survey.
I am thrilled that so many people all over the world have responded to our "Coming Out as an Atheist" survey, but I am even more excited to begin sharing some of the data:
The respondents are young (ish) and males are over represented:
How old are you?
> 18 1.0% 17
18-25 32.1% 573
26-35 30.3% 540
36-45 19.5%… Continue

My life has been so repetitive for as long as I can remember. I have changed but my a lot of thing have just be repeated. I have been struggling with money for a very long time. It is always the same in the past my dad would get a great job and things would be finally getting stable then my dad would get laid off or fired then we were back in the shitter again. Now its that but with me working at the same time.
My life has changed in some ways because of it but most of it has been… Continue

Atheism has been my constant obsession for some time now. I have become increasingly aware of how unhealthy my obsession with atheism and religion has become. I literally think about these subjects all day long every day of the week. In my car I stress myself out having arguments with non-existent Christians in my head. I do the same thing when I'm trying to sleep. I spend an embarrassing amount of time reading atheist blogs and watching atheist videos online. I don't think I can focus on any… Continue

Question: The Old Testament quite clearly states that the Israelites were ordered by God to kill the Canaanites. Ever man, woman and child was to be slaughtered. If this story is historical truth, and God really did issue this command, is he not then admonishing genocide?
This is the very same question asked of Dr. Willian Craig, a research professor of… Continue

LiveScience posted a short article
the other day on potential schemes for dealing with extreme climate change, and the list of possibilities is a wonderful primer on how wild eyed people can be about this issue. The article reported on testimony from climatologist Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C., following a report Dr. Caldiera gave to the British Parliament.
Climate change is a… Continue

I keep hearing all these thumpers saying we should make abortion illegal. Their logic being, "It's taking a life, no different than a murdurer." My question is, how are they going to follow each person around and know if they terminated their pregnancies? Maybe they found a way to do it themselves. I never claimed to be the smartest person on earth, but I think making abortion illegal would be catastrophic. You would have young girls dying from back alley abortions. You would have all kinds of… Continue

Yes, there are atheists in fox holes. I served four years with Amphibious Squadron 6 out of Norfolk and Little Creek Virginia. I was forced when I joined to choose a religious denomination. I told them I didn't want one, but they told me I had better or else, so I chose Presbyterian, and now it's imprinted on my dog tags.
Here's a nice article from the Stars and Stripes titled "Military atheists want new rules on… Continue

You judge us and tell us
"You're going to hell"
It's fallen on deaf ears
can't you tell?
we don't want your god
so stop your trying
whatever you're selling
we ain't buying
oppression and lies
submission and fear
"You better pray,
the end is near"
bigotry and hatred
I want no part of
