A guest blogger at Pharyngula invited regulars to answer the question, "Why do you like science?" What follows is a slightly modified version of my answering comment.
I have always experienced what Carl Sagan called "the romance of science"; it was only when he expressed the phrase that I knew that to be what it was.
I am especially awed by natural sciences and the phenomena they encompass (as opposed to the breathtaking accomplishments such as have been done with… Continue

Ray Comfort is a vacuous chode. This isn't exactly new but I had to say it. I don't hate the guy, I've never met him. I think his views are skewed and his polarizing opinions are nothing but damaging but I don't hate him. Heck, there's even a chance, albeit slim, that we might get along as long as things stayed completely neutral on religion. Anyway...
He's changed the name of his blog to "atheist central", which is probably true considering the number of links his site gets from… Continue

Warreno posted a blog
today featuring what many voters probably just don't see: 'the caliber of person who fears immigrants, queers and a black president.' Warreno is from Arizona. I'm from Pennsylvania. I imagine, really, that ignorant rednecks are everywhere, in every state, at least. But I do come across people that are often surprised to see the type...for them, it's like going to the zoo and seeing… Continue

(from forum post Re-Defining Atheism
Andre M Smith Jr: "I don't know about the rest of you but I am of the mind that Atheism needs a new definition. I think we need to get away from the word "BELIEF" as much as humanly possible"
I side firmly with Sam Harris - I think that “atheist” is a term that we do not need, in the same way that we don’t need a word for someone who rejects… Continue

It is wrong to laugh at the misfortune of others. Wrong, I tell you. It seems that members of the Phelps family lost their garage last night to the flames of what could possibly be an arsonist. That is, indeed, unfortunate. I mean, just because the Phelp's are hate-mongering, unconscionable douchebags doesn't mean we should...

Ford POS with rusted-out body, gas-heavy exhaust mix and a misfiring cylinder rolled up to the local convenience store. Three beer-bellied bearded men in jeans and a white trash woman piled out.
On the passenger side door was the blazon, Western Conservative Alliance
This is what we're up against. This is the base that got Bush elected. This is the caliber of person who fears immigrants, queers and a black president.

[Part 1] At age 19, Mark Everett - better known as E, the frontman of geek-rock outfit Eels - ... found his scientist father Hugh Everett dead from a heart attack. Everett senior was the underacknowledged quantum physicist who first developed the theory of parallel universes. Now, 25 years after his father's death, Mark wants to get to know this emotionally absent savant who rarely spoke. He does this by interviewing his dad's… Continue

So, I've been on Atheist Nexus for a little while now. So far I find the place to be fun, inspiring, and quite friendly. It's been a great experience. While I'd love to donate tons of mad cash, I don't have it. But I read my new friend Hessenroots
' most recent blog post about donating, and thought, hey, what a great idea!
Hess just started a CafePress shop
to sell all… Continue

Early-ish this morning fellow AN member 'IsThatLatin' posted a blog in regard to the sites fund-raising efforts.
I thought about it, agreed, commented and moved on. For some reason it was stuck in my head for a better part of the day and it got me thinking a bit more.
Without going into a winded diatribe on the matter here's the deal:
I've come up with a number of new… Continue

New post up on my blog
. One you're probably not going to like.
Here's a snippet:
"Many atheists fiercely argue against any suggestion that atheism is anything like religion. Not only that, many expressive posts have also been written about how atheism is most definitely not an ideology or a philosophy, only to then describe a common set of beliefs, similar… Continue

Though not directly Religion/Atheism related I just want to post about a great book about Climate change that I just finished reading - Ice, Mud and Blood: Lessons from Climates Past by Chris Turney. I'd review it myself for you but could really say nothing better than Atheist Nexus' own P.Z. Meyers.

Recently while skimming through discussion threads on the Richard Dawkins forum, I was attracted to a thread discussing uproar by some members over the number of sexually themed discussion threads, with several members very upset over the number and the type of topics being discussed. The topics ranged from serious non religious based ethical queries into such topics as how one should view homosexuality or how one should define pedophilia, to more superfluous topics such as how long the perfect… Continue

I've had a few questions from people here about the research I do in a lab I work for at my university, which I briefly describe in my profile so I thought I'd describe it in more detail here.
I work in a lab that is interested in memory and attention and the mechanisms of executive control (which essentially refers to how attention is directed).
Our lab has looked at how retrieving an item from memory can impair memory for related items which causes long term forgetting.… Continue

Becoming a Freethinker and a Scientist
When I was a fairly precocious young man I became thoroughly impressed with the futility of the hopes and strivings that chase most men restlessly through life. Moreover, I soon discovered the cruelty of that chase, which in those years was much more carefully covered up by hypocrisy and glittering words than is the case today. By the mere existence of his stomach everyone was condemned to participate in that chase. The… Continue

I've been pretty busy lately. School will be starting up again very soon and, rather suddenly, I got funds from my institution to pop off to King's College for some research into the personal papers of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu (this is neither here nor there, but I'm all excited about it). I've been getting everything together for both and haven't had a lot of time to screw around online, like I usually do.
Imagine my half-surprise to find Atheist Nexus in a right kerfuffle, again.… Continue

I've searched the internet but fankly the results for atheist merchandise aren't that great. I don't want anything with a fish and I don't want anything offensive. I would like something with an american atheist logo or something. Just something simple.

I've loved this comic for a long time and things like this remind me why:
xkcd: A webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language.

I am nominally an atheist - a person who does not believe in God or Gods. It has been said many times before that defining oneself as an atheist is a strange thing to do. To do that is to name yourself for something that you are not. In the same way, I could call myself an "avegetarian" (since I do eat meat).
Beside the nonsense factor behind the word "Atheist", I think we have just about reached a point here in the United States where using the "A" word to… Continue
