Freedom and it's limits...

...do freedom exist?

It is possible that something such as "freedom", that is, the state in which a person can do anything she/he wants whenever she/he wants to do it without having to make any excuse, nor feel guilty about it nor regret. Thus, being "free" is a superior state that is like the Nirvana. That is: freedom is a mental state which go beyond all worldly things (society) and returns people to a more primitivecondition.

The question here is: can a person or a… Continue

Just taking some time to actually write something until it's time to go bowling with my friends...

I'm starting to wonder if just being an atheist/agnostic is enough to bring all these individuals together. There's not much more I can say/argue/critique/converse/associate within the secular domain. Or have I reached some sort of plateau? I don't know.

But I do know this. I plan to graduate in a year, and I'm that type of person who is easily distracted, so maybe joining a… Continue

In with the new

First time post here, and with 2009 within hours of this part of the country, figured I'd post my resolutions. I won't get into too much detail on the first couple. Lose weight, eat healthier, and so on - that's a given any more. The other resolutions include working more on my stitching and taking better care of my house. I admit it, neither my hubby or I are housekeepers, so this is a resolution for me.

The major resolution, however, is being true to myself. I've admitted to… Continue

Our data says the same thing: take god out of our formal political ceremonies

Folks,

I just read the CNN article "Lawsuit seeks to take 'so help me God' out of inaugural" written by Caroll Cratty (here is the url:http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/12/31/inauguration.lawsuit/index.html).

From the article: "Newdow and other plaintiffs say they want to watch the inaugural either in person or on television. As atheists, they contend, having to watch a ceremony with religious components will make them feel excluded and… Continue

What to do

I've been reading so many blogs recently and much of it is so depressing. Every time that I hear a new story about the fundamentalist state of mind and the effects that it's having both on world and people, it's so sad.

So then, why are we the bad guys? We're the ones who are hate-filled and and unwilling to try and understand. While I have the same distaste for the religion itself, I have a lot of trouble coping with how to address "the flock". I guess it depends on the person. Many… Continue

Do You Want To Become a Church State

from my blog at rationalism.me

If you watched the Church Camp Video listed on this site (ill attach it for you) then you realize that for a portion of society they want to use the power of their religion to influence the State. They wish to band together and influence the outcome of our lives.

Our founding fathers said it better then anyone else can so here are some quotes to chew on:

"All persons shall have full and free liberty of religious opinion; nor… Continue

Westboro Baptist Church Plans to Picket Funerals of the Eight Avalanche Victims in Fernie, BC

Those … well, there’s no cuddly way to say it. Those bastards at the Westboro Baptist Church are at it again. On Monday, eight men were killed in an avalanche in Fernie, BC while enjoying a day of snowmobiling. Fred Phelps and his band of deluded psychos wasted no time and issued this press release (page is a pdf) that… Continue

We Need to Rethink the Argument

Michael Newdow--our good atheist fighting the good fight in California--is, once again, standing up for our rights. He is known for working through litigation to remove the words 'under God' from our Pledge of Allegiance. This is what he's up to now...…

Diving In to Joy

When I first jump into the pool I take a moment to stretch out and enjoy the sudden cool embrace of the water. I let go of my mind, my worries, my neuroses, and just for that brief instant I feel completely calm and at peace with my existence.

I don't wonder, that when Virginia Woolf walked into the water, that she was seeking this same kind of release. I do wonder what drove her to seeking its permanence. Life is so precious.

Every once in a while, I'll approach this… Continue

Isn't loving the lord great: Catholic School Teacher Fired for Marriage

first, I don't get it when people who, in most cases, know what they crazy, insane religion is about, yet complain when these moronic religious laws touches their lives.

Take the case of this Catholic school teacher for example, loosing her livelihood for marrying a divorced man.

"She told the San Antonio Express-News that the firing took some of the joy out of the preparations for the marriage."

"I couldn't get out of bed. It's just been this cloud.…

The hidden mechanism of Evolution

Article published on Bio Medicine on 11/11/2008 by Kitta MacPherson of Princeton University.

Evolution's new wrinkle

A team of Princeton University scientists has discovered that chains of proteins found in most living organisms act like adaptive machines, possessing the ability to control their own evolution.

The research, which appears to offer evidence of a hidden mechanism guiding the way biological organisms respond to the forces of natural… Continue

Not alone! At last!

I've only started using a computer and the Internet this year, so it's been a pleasant surprise to discover that I'm not alone. Not that I live in an overwhelmingly religious society (Denmark) but I meet almost nobody who is a real skeptic/atheist. The vast majority spout things about "there are more things in heaven and earth", usually thinking they are quoting the Bible - it's Shakespeare - and without knowing the other half: "than are dreamt of in your philosophy, Horatio." Don't be narrow… Continue

Get thee to The Atheist Spot

I'm sure most of you are internet savvy enough to know about places like Digg and Reddit. Well, I was unaware until recently that there is a place called "The Atheist Spot" which is a community news generated community for stories of particular interest to atheists.

http://www.atheistspot.com/

Not sure how many of you were already aware of this, and if this is OFN, but I just thought I'd try to popularize it a little more. So far… Continue

I could have told them this 20 years ago, but they wouldn't have listened.....

This was taken from a news article on President Bush and where he "lost" the American people. You can read the whole article here:

Back when I was a Republican, I watched the so called "Religious Right" come into the party. They came in like a virus. They did and still do the same approach. "We'll stick a toe in and… Continue

How a 29-page booklet converted me to creationism

After nearly 38 years of life... being born into a christian family, graduating nearly at the top of my class at a christian university (why christian? -because it was close), and being surrounded by "believers" at home, school, and work... the idea of the existance of a god to me has always seemed laughable. --Except for the fact that I was never allowed to laugh. And the idea of "creationism" would be totally hilarious if not for the fact that so many people actually buy it. I'd be glad to… Continue

Skepchick lists Top 10 Skeptics Who Kicked Ass in 2008

Rebecca Watson and the Skepchicks (which would make a great band name) have selected the Top 10 Skeptics Who Kicked Ass in 2008: people who have led the fight for reason and against pseudoscience. The list includes a lot of big names within the skepticism community, notably Ben Goldacre, PZ Myers and Phil Plait.

I, being hopelessly lame, had not heard of all the winners, but thanks to Rebecca now I know, and knowing is half the battle.… Continue

Very Sloppy of Him

1. The more skilled a craftsman is, the less defects his product contains. [1]

2. The perfect craftsman is an omnipotent creator (a.k.a. "God").

3. God should therefore be capable of producing a creation without any sloppy defects. [2] This includes humans, of course.

4. At the organ level, the inflamed human appendix is an obvious defect of design.

5. Ergo, humans are far from being physically flawless. In behavioural aspects, Christianity largely agrees. [3]

6. One is… Continue

Anti-sex fanatics lose again

The Washington Post reports a new study showing that teenagers who are brainwashed or cudgeled into taking anti-sex pledges end up having sex just as much as propaganda-free teenagers. Sexless-pledged kids excel in other areas, though, such as acquisition of sexually-transmitted diseases and unplanned pregnancies. Once again we see clear and unambiguous evidence that the only things… Continue
