Mondo Diablo Episode 331: Santa is a Wildman
Welcome to an all-new Secular Solstice Season 2011! This year has come to a great start, since I did not have to work on Black Friday! How much better could it be? The clips for this show come from an old article in LA weekly by Jeffrey Vallance. It's lauded by cryptozoologists for some reason, but I think it's a great article for fans of the pagan origins of Christmas. You can read the article here:…

the ability to wonder
we recently had a bit of a storm where i live, wind and a shit load of rain. it made the roads hellish and im sure that plenty of people had plenty of curses aimed towards the weather. but there is a amazing beauty to storms. how they form how they act and the over all awe as to what they can do. when i look at the sky in the night and see all the beautiful stars that light up the skyline i think of how we are so small in the big picture of nature we climbed to the top of…

New Charts Reveal Personhood USA Doesn't Know Facts
If there's one thing I hate, it's a liar. The people involved with Personhood USA seem to be very angry with liars also. The trouble is: I say they are lying and they say Planned Parenthood is lying. In 5 minutes that I will never get back, I read Keith Ashley's little article entitled "New Poll Reveals Real…

Hee hee, I'm getting such a kick reading the various FB status updates regarding black friday and jesus! Since I am not a selfish person, I decided to share a few with you:
1)Who's standing in line fighting to see jesus? Try jesus - no line!
2)I think we should have black friday for folks that wanna be saved. You have to be at church at 3 a.m. to make it to heaven.
3)I got everything I need on black friday, JESUS!
The last one is my personal…

Atheism and Honesty
Tom Jacobs has an article on AlterNet: Why Are People Still Afraid of Atheism?
http://www.alternet.org/story/153194/why_are_people_still_afraid_of_atheism?page=entire
The major point of the article is that atheists are less trusted because they don't believe that they are constantly watched by supernatural enforcers of social norms.
I suggest this reply:…

Bullying is okay if it's morally guided?
Michigan passed a Bill earlier this month stating that bullying in school is now acceptable "if their act of harassment on another young person was done because of 'deep moral conviction' or 'religious belief.' On another article about this, a teacher posted that "I had one kid say to me 'Well my Mom and Preacher say that being gay is a sin so I am not sitting next to this filthy homo.'" And this can't be punished or corrected. As someone going into education, this is a scary thing. I don't…

Crucial quote from Thomas Paine about "revelation"
From THE AGE OF REASON, Part 2, section 20, by Thomas Paine:
Revelation then, so far as the term has relation between God and man, can only be applied to something which God reveals of his will to man; but though the power of the Almighty to make such a communication is necessarily admitted, because to that power all things are possible, yet the thing so revealed (if anything ever was revealed, and which, bye the bye, it is impossible to prove), is revelation to the person…

Religion, History, Government
Religion seems to have played an important role in government throughout history. As we have seen through religion through many years, it has been an effective tool to “teach” and to bestow obedience among people. Religion has been so good at this in fact, that it is not uncommon to see absolute obedience among avid people who participate among religion. Religion throughout the years has avidly taught not to question much, to work hard, and to suffer, with the hope that you may one day be…

A Thanksgiving Prayer
Bless, O Lord this food that it may be an effective and salutary remedy for mankind. In other words, please let all of the nutrients contained in this food be as effective as possible in my digestion system. Don’t let it give me diarrhea, food poisoning, or any sort of general discomfort. Thank you for giving me this food while you let countless others starve to death around the world. For Thy name's sake, grant that all who partake of this food may obtain health of body, safety of soul,…

To be or not to be?......a god parent!
So there I was in a sort of day dream, “how did I end up here” the little voice in the back of my mind was saying. My wife was sat on about the fifth row back with an amused smile, a smile that only two people that share the same bed and know each other intimately could. Yes, we both got the joke, but unfortunately the joke was fully on me!! It was my own fault, I hadn’t really thought it through had I. Well I would have plenty of time to regret this bizarre event in the future. It was such…

Jesus, Tiger Woods and stem cell research?
I have always wondered what our bearded luminary would have to say on topics and moral dilemmas that we now face in our modern world. So to facilitate this I have built an imaginary time machine to help with these ponderable issues, (well if people of faith can have imaginary friends why can’t I have an imaginary time machine…….seems only fair?).
“So don’t just sit there……come on jump aboard. I’ve brought along some inflight nibbles and a couple of films to make you comfy!!…

What Are We Fighting For?
A young Afghan woman, raped and impregnated by a relative, was originally sentenced to 12 years in prison for adultery and not promptly reporting the crime. Because of the dishonor of sex outside of wedlock, she had been given the choice of marrying her attacker to get out of jail and legitimize her infant daughter in the eyes of Afghanistan's conservative society.
U.S. cost or war in Afghanistan: 1,845 dead, 4,984 casualties, $477 billion and over $1 billion per month.
"I…

So, I'm in the breakroom today and a co-worker says to me, that it's a shame that we get more time off at Thanksgiving than xmas. We should be celebrating "the birth". She asked me if I agreed. I said that I didn't share her feelings on that and to have a nice Thanksgiving.
