I think atheists like us need to stop allying evolution with non-belief. We need to stop using it to try and disprove creationism because evolution does not directly refute creation (hence deists: people who think god created the universe and let it run by itself.
It's turning into a pseudo-dogma and is being used against us in teaching creationism in schools.
While my Thanks Giving was uneventful I will let you in on the highlights.
The prayer before the meal, a timeless tradition or torture in disguise? All the while my husband's father is saying the thanksgiving prayer my stomach is burning from fasting all morning cause I want to gorge myself on that oh so yummy food. Why should I stand for it? I NEVER bow my head, and looking around the room this year I noticed others not doing the same as well. This made me happy on the inside… Continue
So, we're watching a Wiggles Christmas DVD with my 6 year-old daughter (Note: For those of you Wiggles-challenged, the Wiggles are an Australian kids entertainment group). We get about 10 minutes into it and they are talking to some kids dressed as various characters from the manger story. My daughter turns to us and says, "Can we watch something else? This has nothing to do with Christmas!". Gotta love it!

He is actually suggesting the wall of separation of church and state should be demolished...(yes.. i know there is no actual reference to such.. but it IS implied)... He says "its not what we were founded on"
Oh really? REALLY? The same founders he says actually wanted this to be a religious nation.. are the same ones that drafted the Constitution which said:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of… Continue
This word humanist is very new to me, as all political and religious designations are totally meaningless in practice as people of different and usually deviant from the original ideology call themselves by the same name in order to overtly get support from others who just takes a person's self labeling as to mean "a person with the same ideas as I have".
This convo kept me up until 2am last night. I'm probably wasting my time on this one, which is why I was reluctant to get drawn back into the evolution vs creationism talk the other night, but when we get together it's usually inevitable.
Is there anything I can do to gain some ground? I think I need to be quicker on the draw. She types like a demon.

I'm not exactly sure how long the term's been in common usage (and you know how I feel about doing research), but I'd guess it's only really taken off since atheism started becoming mainstream. For anyone not quite caught up, "apatheism" is a portmanteau of "apathy" and "theism" (or "atheism", I… Continue

Inspired by a discussion with a Christian friend of mine and this video:
This is a continuation of the argument presented in the video. When presented with this argument most theists will argue that Adam and Eve did know good and evil or that they simply knew not to disobey God, and that should have been enough. However, upon closer examination of Genesis, I don't think either of these arguments hold up. You see, I don't think that God's words are clear… Continue
Nature is, as Alfred Lord Tennyson said, “red in tooth and claw”. It has no morals. Morality is a human construct that usually reflects our social norms. As such, morality is formed by an amalgam of influences from family, religion, culture, evolution and the arts. This amalgam of influences varies from person to person and is relative to our exposure to, and experience with, these influences.
Almost half the human race subscribes to a religion that claims morality is objective… Continue
In debates about the value of religion, I have heard this one put forth by highly educated people. It, more or less, boils down to this:
Many great feats of construction, architecture and art have been achieved by cultures attempting to honor their deity or deities. Without religion of one sort or another, not only would these structures never have been built (depriving us all of a kind of collective self-esteem boost) but the technology learned in the process of building them would… Continue
First of all, I'm new here and just would like to say hello.
Now on to the blog entry.
Christian atheism is a belief system in which God is rejected but the teachings of Jesus are followed in one's everyday life.
1. the assertion of the unreality of God for our age, including the understandings of God which have been a part of traditional Christian theology 2. the insistence upon coming to grips with contemporary culture as a necessary feature of…
The Victorian State Government has basically ignored the request for funding for the "Rise of Atheism" Convention in Melbourne next March, while allocating $4.5m in funds for the "The Parliament of the World’s Religions".
This decision to basically ignore the funding request shows gross contempt for Atheism and Atheists alike in favour of religion and religious organisations.
See article posted at the convention's website… Continue
Gathered around the table, a family; cobbled together from family, a broken family, a growing family and family-less. Everyone patiently awaiting each and every one to fill their plate and to be seated. Respectfully neglecting the inviting collection of morsels selected from the bounty laid before us. Each in turn took their seat and reverently waited.
It came to me who took seat at last, these being guest at my table. Seeing the expectant faces around I realized that a ritual… Continue
I made a tweet this morning, based on this news story I read in The Daily Press about a group of students at Bethel Christian School who: "took part in a variety of projects, including writing letters and sending care packages to troops in Iraq, assembling food boxes and grooming kits for the Peninsula Rescue Mission, cleaning up Bluebird Gap Farm, completing household chores for…Continue
So I got invited to a neighbors' place for Thanksgiving - just the three of us.
Ok, not so much 'invited' as I sneakily arranged the whole thing. Quasi-homeless, no cooking facilities of my own, no transportation to go anywhere else, facing a Thanksgiving of cheap burrito fixings and Oreos while I watch DVDs in continual avoidance of housework. Oh, and recovering from a recent distressing phone call from a neurotic family member, right before this holiday where everyone's going on… Continue
heehee after the classic what if scenario that god really existed, the poor cowardly theist often follows with: What will YOU say to god if he really does exist and you stand before him upon your death?
hmmm.... well... after a couple times of just dodging the question with logic, I decided to humor the hypothetical situation:
