How numbers work

I started a mini-riot in San Diego today.  I was eating a banana outside of 7-11 and a cop walked past me to pick on a hobo for drinking a coffee. He was yelling at the homeless guy for loitering.  I was like "I'm loitering then".  I probably should have looked at my clothes first before saying that.  Old teeshirt, cargo pants and worn out sneakers.  Luckily a few more homeless people starting chiming in, so the cop walked off.

This is very similar to how religion works.  If more…

Deconversion is Difficult

Anyone who has successfully deconverted knows how difficult that can be to give up on a cherished idea.  I wrote a short poem expressing how difficult this was for me.

Thrown out of church today.

Thrown out of church today.  I was hungover as usual and feeling incredibly nauseous.  Thankfully the church had installed a vomit box near the entrance labeled "For the sick."  Boy was I sick, but not as sick as the last guy who used the box.  He must have puked up at least $3.50 in pocket change!

Self-Interest Or Altruism

Self-Interest Or Altruism

The following was inspired by some comments on the blog post Epicureanism, Objectivism And The Predisposition Of The Brain

There is a lot of confusion about this question, but I think that this is due to people having very different selves and what is…

Opium of the People

Until a few days ago, I always interpreted Marx's famous quote "Religion is the opium of the people" as a metaphor.

A few days ago, I changed my mind.   I was sitting at a bus stop and got into talking with the woman sitting next to me, who in less than a minute presented herself as a Jehova's witness.   Usually I avoid religious discussion as a completely futile attempt to get through the believers' delusion.   They believe, what they feel a…

The Dad Confusion

Before you get the wrong idea I should probably point out that the title of this post in no way refers to doubts that anyone may have in regards to my parentage (since there aren’t any); neither does it refer to anyone else’s, so there is no need to go calling “The Jeremy Kyle Show” asking for a DNA test, lie detector results, or a quick go on their “loud obnoxious dickhead” manufacturing plant. The title is, in fact, nothing more than yet another in a continuing series of weak puns, this…

Woof, Woof!!…aggressive atheism on the prowl.

I am coming across more and more news articles containing the phrase ‘aggressive atheism’. My first response was to consider whether this is just the media creating a story out of nothing, but then I have noticed that Christian groups, including the liberal types have jumped on the band wagon and are flouting this term about, as if it shows that atheism is a nasty thing!! Yeh, right…..look!, look!, an aggressive atheist with science books under his…

Out of the closet

while in a scary time with our son in the hospital, my mom asked me if "I prayed for him" I hesitated and said: "no, I did not believe in prayer, that it was science that would help my son". I then wrote a long letter to my immediate family informing them of my lack of belief and why. It has went smooth thus far and I feel so good to be open with my thoughts. I even changed my facebook from church of the fonz to athiest:)

Epicurean Commitment

I define myself as an Epicurean Atheist.   Being lonely, I started a blog describing my own search for what I call the Egalitarian Rational Commitment Paradigm.   So far, my mindmate to be found has not stumbled upon it.

Therefore I just started a new approach by creating a page, where all lonely Epicureans can look for a mate and add a profile.   Egalitarian…

We Are Gadhafi. We Are the Tyrrant.

Okay, so maybe you and I didn't personally go to Libya, pull an old, unarmed man into the street and shoot a hole through his head. But we clicked on the links to the videos, didn't we? Actually, I didn't. I refuse to celebrate and glorify killing, be it Gadhafi or Bin Ladin or anybody less notorious, whether I agree with their conduct or not.

Every generation these travails repeat themselves. When my mother was a child, it was Stalin and Mussolini dragged through the streets…

Let's Go Back To The Principles Our Founding Fathers Set Up For This Country

After the Republican debate last Tuesday, one main argument stuck out in my mind that is swaying me towards voting for Mitt Romney....

Robert Jeffress, the pastor of First Baptist Church in Dallas, endorsed Texas Gov. Rick Perry during an Oct. 7 Values Voter Summit introduction, and he asked those in attendance, "Do we want a candidate who is a good moral person or one who is a born-again follower of Jesus Christ?" (attempting to discredit Romney's associated with…
