We atheists can remain sober without AA.
But, for the same reason that AA members with religious faith have a hard time finding serenity and sanity in their lives without the intermittent wisdom of others to listen to, we atheists find ourselves in the same position. We "take what we need" from the things we hear at the table in order to contemplate our sobriety, just as they do, and we "leave the rest" of the gobbledygook for others to ponder--just as they do.
I was…

Africa is perhaps the most miserable place the world has ever known. This fact is all but ignored by the media in western Countries. Most of the governments here, although calling themselves promoters of democracies, are ruthless dictatorships, ruled by greed and callous disregard for human life and dignity. They are supported by religious institutions that desire a share in the power, and they are supported by the "Western World" because they can still exploit them for profit. That's Africa,…

I've been reading the comments from this, and the one thing that stood out to me was this:
I see a lot of Left wing, Right wing bashing. Please stop. As the US government stands right now, their electoral parties are no more than two sides of the same coin. Those who bash either wing while…

This one has been on my mind, off and on, for years.
If you could have any one technology, and all required support technology, from any Scifi universe what technology would you want?
Personally I would choose Star Treks replicators.

With recent campaigns against Sharia Law in the UK I think the time has come to post a rehashed version of this post (once posted at my now defunct UK tech Portal site) … read to the end for latest developments:
A friend of mine asked that I post this anonymously:
I wish to make an apology. I don’t exactly know to whom, but there are a large number of people I’ve wronged and if you’re one of them, I’m sorry.
I have always had a… Continue

So this time I would like to know:
If you could have any one question answered, what would that question be?
Personally I would want to know, Is there intelligent life elsewhere in the universe?
EDIT I think I need to rephrase the question. "If you could discover the answer to any one question, what would that question be?"

As much as I respect Dawkins, Hitchens, and other intelligent, loud and proud atheists, this is NOT what will get Christians to drop their religion.
When I first came here a few weeks ago, I was flamed up about Atheism. I wanted to smash every Christian in debate and roar over their crushed egos when they realize that their god is false (dramatized of course =P)
However, the more I tried to debate and argue Christians, the more people just played me off as "just some…

I am working with a student right now in my Sociology Senior Seminar on a topic very much related to my own research on atheists. Here is the data from one question (so far) answered by 27 students. I am interested -though not surprised- by the high percentage of "No religions". The survey will stay live until next Friday and we'll have more detailed data. To put this in context, Elon University is a 5000+ liberal arts school in North Carolina.…

Here's a
gem of a story from
OneNewsNever. Seems that cheerleaders at a Georgia public school has been displaying bible verses during their cheers at football games. A parent complained to the school board and the board decided to ban the display of bible verses by the cheerleaders during school sponsored activities. This ban has lead to students and adults displaying…

My partner replied that she does not believe and then gave a simplified version of evolution. I was impressed. What would you do?

In my previous blog entry, I posted the first half of a lengthy article that starts off (ostensibly) scientific, then degenerates into new-age subjects like ESP and other "psychic phenomena". I cut out the less-than-scientific parts.
This blog entry posts (by request) the last half of the article. To appreciate the second half, below, you'll really need to read the first half as well.

More than that, some believe it may solve some mysteries…

I took another look at the
Muslim Demographics video and I’m quite dismayed. Unknowingly, I was recommending a Christian-based piece of propaganda.
I was so daunted by the Muslim growth statistics (> 8 per family) that I overlooked the purpose and intention of the video makers.
First of all, when a video or article starts off with, “According to research…” it should send up a red flag. What…

So I've made it no secret on my FB account for the past year or so that I'm an Atheist. I post various notes and links referring to Atheist topics. As various friends and family have become FB friends, I have continued this practice, and let them find out for themselves. No conflicts until now.
My niece posted a YouTube link about "The Atheist Professor who declared that if god existed, he would stop a piece of chalk from shattering when it hit the floor." Oh Wow! I had seen so many…
