Becoming Numb to Beliefs

Before I write my first post here I would like to make a quick introduction. I am a teenage, mostly closeted atheist. I have been an atheist since 8th grade and I am currently over halfway through high school. I would love to say more, but I don't want to make it too obvious who I am.

Recently I have been finding myself thinking much less about religion when others bring it up, and I call myself a christian without even thinking about it at all. Recently a person told me they… Continue

ISIL/ISIS Here we go again !!!!

ISIS   wants  to draw the West into  the Middle  East  again so they can obliterate  us.......Why should  we have to fight  on their terms?      The West has  the superior force of arms  and technology, we should fight  on our  terms......ISIL   means  the Islamic state of Iraq  and the Levant......The Levant  is the biblical name  of what is  now  Israel, Palestine, Jordan,Syria, Lebanon and some say  the Sinai....Therefore  their goal  is  to control the…

The Pennsylvania Atheist/ Humanist Convention 2014

Hello all,

I had a great time at the Pittsburgh DoubleTree Hotel tonight. I met a bunch of great people and had a lot of great conversations.

I met too many people to name them all, but I would like to mention that I got to meet Bill and Suzy. They produce a podcast called Bar Room Atheist which I will be checking out very soon. I spoke mostly with Bill. He used to be a sheriff (I think), and he also studied 'the' Bible to become a better Christian.

I exchanged…

Can we please call the enemy by its real name?

We now face a new menace in the Mideast: a body of fanatics (armed with weapons we left) who will kill anybody who gets in the way of their turning the clock back to 1500.  They're openly threatening the US.

Once again politicians dance around the real problem.  It's not terrorism.  It's not even Dubya's "evildoers."

No public figure has the guts to call the enemy by its real name: RELIGION.  A vicious, ineradicable set of shared beliefs that is responsible for 90% of the…

The Answers

Long, long ago, when I was a superstitious, semi-spiritual, wishful thinker - in spite of an intense overwhelming fear of death - I used to imagine how at least in death, I would know the answers to everything. My spirit would ascend, and I would enter a realm where the answers would be revealed to me.

So eventually, I would find out what the spiritual entity behind the whole thing had planned for me. The answers would be my reward. The ultimate revelation. This notion can…

My research on family violence and training programs of non-violent interactions

The focus of my research in 1977-79 was on the factors that contribute to maintaining and sustaining family violence. I found that all institutions, family, church, education, health care, laws, and law enforcement did not take the word of a child or battered spouse seriously, ignored or denied abuse occurred, and did not do what was necessary to make changed that needed to be made. Furthermore, I found the highest incident rate of child abuse occurred in homes of the religious. This was…

Many are Called but Few are Chosen: My Belief -- Yes, Belief -- in Euhemerus

This is essentially a piece I originally wrote in one of my occult fanzines either late 80s or early 90s, when I was still in the thrall of Crowleyanity (also known as Thelema) and began to really wonder why man makes deities in his own image. I consulted many works on mythology and god-making, learning that all religions begin as cults, so it is redundant to call, say, Scientology a cult of Old Mother Hubbard. It's a religion we could even call Hubbardism. I read of an ancient Greek…

Infinity, Possibilities, the Multiverse, and Misconceptions

A common thing I see brought up in discussions about the multiverse is that god would have to exist because in an infinite number of possible universes that option would have played out. This is incorrect, and a common misconception regarding infinity, probability, and restrictions. It has a lot to do with our hesitance to even accept infinities as possible to begin with.

The reason we humans recoil at the concept of infinities has much to do with our very limited…

Welcome to the Age of Denial

Welcome to the Age of Denial

As more and more ways of knowing become available, as more information easily comes through our computers, it is exciting to track down information to see if it is validated with evidence or repeated based on a belief.  Sorting through the overload of news outlets with unreliable sources can be…

US Ebola Patients Make Full Recovery

US Ebola Patients Make Full Recovery

Let's just stop and think about this statement for a minute:

"Brantly thanked the hospital workers who cared for him in Atlanta and administered the experimental serum that cured him. 'Above all I am grateful to God for sparing my life,' Brantly said."

Let us take away the research that was…

Ferguson: A Larger Dialog

Ferguson, MO.

Okay, please don't roll your eyes and think "Here we ago again. Another blog about police brutality, police states in America, and racist bashing." I'm not going to be analyzing the events of Ferguson, per say. I am writing about a larger picture here. No speeches about how…
